Could it be that French music students are so much better than in Germany?  I think these performances are outstanding.

The origin of the song, as stated by Greg Lake in interviews is that it was the first song he wrote when his mother bought him a guitar when he was just 12 years old. With the first chords he learned (D, A minor, E minor, and G), he wrote an acoustic version of the song. In early 1968, Lake would later rehearse the song with King Crimson.

The song came to be used on Emerson, Lake & Palmer's debut album when they needed one more song. Lake played the version he had written from childhood, but the rest of the band did not like it, feeling it would not fit with the other album tracks. Lake, then worked on it in the studio with, Carl Palmer. Lake, added numerous overdubs of bass, triple-tracked acoustic guitars, electric guitar, and harmony vocals until it "sounded like a record." This version of the song — with a second electric guitar solo in place of where, Emerson, would later overdub his Moog solo is featured on the album's deluxe edition.

Unlike several songs on the album, which use a distorted fuzz bass to sound like a guitar, "Lucky Man" is an acoustic ballad. The lyrics tell the story of a man who had everything, went to war, and died.

When I was living in Boston, I saw Vladimir Horowitz play this Sonata in one of his most remarkable and final concerts at Boston Symphony Hall before he died in 1989. He was well into his 80's. I went back to my teacher and said, "I want to learn that!"  Well I did, many moons ago.  I still have the music with notes.  I don't perform written music any longer (well Chrismas songs, and family favorites), and I can't play any of my old repertoire from memory, but the beautiful melodic theme has stayed with me.  This is my tribute to Scarlatti, a genius composer, ahead of his time, but more than that,  his music has a profound depth of emotion as if it were written today!

This is a song started when Mark came up with its architecture, recorded in a  slower, more laid back version on his own. However, he wanted a more souped up version with solos in turns. So, he turned to The Eclectic Collective to fill in the pieces. He originally had solos in all the parts which he laid down on the keys, and he had some lyrics, too. However, once he heard The Mysterious Decibel's excellent lyrics and vocals, the song totally changed the direction and the vibe, for the stellar. 
  But MD didn't start the whole thing. As happens sometimes, even without Tez on this one, we still needed to clear out some space to let everyone have their say. So, Mark went in and lengthened the song mechanically. Once we had a final form, Ken, as always, came up with the foundation for the song, allowing Josh to add his version of Mark's bass line. Then, after MD gave us the vocals to form the song, we got down to adding the solos. JJ first added his thrilling opening piano solo, as well as the electric piano solo right after the first verse, which Mark is also playing a VST sax solo in, as well. Then Josh added his guitar solo, which is the first of the two, with a very clean tone. Right after that, Stephen added his fiery solo, which follows right after with a more overdriven tone. Finally, Mark stepped back in and added his killer harp solo at the end. Of course, it needed to be mixed well, too, so we turned to Stephen for that important role, once again, which he fulfilled expertly.  
  This past Tuesday, we released a fun little series of interviews over a compilation of some of our favorite musical moments. If you want to hear our voices and some of our thoughts about music, check it out. I realize it's a big ask at twenty minutes, but you might really enjoy it, especially if you follow us, and have been for a while. It's a celebration of all of our work over the past almost year together in various forms. This song was supposed to be a showcase of all of our skills, except Tez isn't in on this one. He'll be on the next one, though, for sure.
  We hope you enjoy this jazzier side of the EC as much as we enjoyed making it. MD's lyrics are about a psycho killer artist who hides clues about his murders in his paintings.

based on the novel Michael Strogoff by Jules Verne, a multi-part TV production was broadcast in the seventies, for which Vladimir Cosma composed the music. Our student Eva from Deauville has reworked the main theme of the film character Nadia and rearranged her adventures in musical scenes.  This little suite hides many small musical surprises and transports the listener to the icy tundra of Western Siberia.
