S4M23 For Oasis At Nowadays (6-27-24)

I wrote this song with a big emphasis on the lyrics. Inspired by triphop from Bristol, Manu Chao and hiphop from both the US and UK, I really wanted capture the complexity of my Asian identity. My family are from India, but originally from a region that now belongs to Pakistan. My grandparents and parents lost their homeland during partition. At school in Chicago, I experienced a lot racism from other students, who said I didn't belong here and that I was taking jobs from their parents. My parents tried to make me blend it, by disassociating our cultural heritage and not teaching us Hindi or Punjabi. No matter how hard I tried, I was different from the others in my school. In a sense, I embrace my cultural heritage but acknowledge that I am sort of lost because many other Indians call me an American-born confused desi - which I took on the term to Natural-born desi - meaning I am who I am. I am Asian, Indian, Punjabi and American, a French speaker and product of the Commonwealth. All these aspects, good, bad or weird make me who I am.

Natural Born Desi 2024

This is a cover of « Mercy » by Madame, Monsieur a duo who represented France in the 2018 Eurovision song contest. Based on a true story of a refugee woman who gave birth to a child aboard on a rescue boat in the Mediterranean sea, I had to cover it with my own style infusing reggae and dance. This is the same song we sing in French class. Sometimes, I mash it up with Bob Marley's Sun is Shining because they're both in the same key and both talk about rescuing and miracles. I had to throw in a rocking solo to cut through the continuous beat. Pretty banging.
