This was the final composition project for my Music Theory IV course at East Carolina University. The requirement was to compose an atonal piece in ABA' form, using a prescribed set. These sets were to be inverted and/or transposed. Vocalists were to choose a text to set to this music. This text is from the seven last words of Christ.

Charles Wesley, Jr. (1757-1834) was the hymnist and co-founder of the Methodist movement, Charles Wesley. Though not as well-known as his brother, Samuel Wesley, he was also considered a musical prodigy in his childhood, playing the organ at only three years old.

"The Call" from Five Mystical Songs

This short poem is simple and direct. It is almost completely composed of words of one syllable. Allusions to the Old and New testaments, as well as to the Church of England liturgy, abound in Herbert's poetry. In this short poem there are references to Revelations 22:26: 'Come, Lord Jesus..' and to John 14:6, where Jesus is described as 'the way, the truth and the life'. 'Come' is the call of the poet to God, but it is also the response of the poet to a call from God.
