Christmas and Holiday

The Jazz Starters! Series features easy level charts especially designed to introduce younger musicians to the jazz ensemble experience. These charts sound great with standard, limited and/or extended instrumentation. Non-standard jazz instrument parts are provided to get everyone involved. The rhythm section parts are fully written out. Solo sections are simple, with suggested solos included to encourage first steps toward improvisation. A great way to get young musicians started and excited about jazz!

Charts in the Barnhouse Jazz Ensemble series range in difficulty from grades 2-3.5. They are written for the standard jazz ensemble set up of 5 saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm section. However, many are scored to sound great with smaller instrumentation. Open solo sections in these charts typically have chord changes marked in all parts, with suggested solos provided.

2024 Jazz

The Barnhouse Build-A-Band series is designed for bands with several years of experience, but with limited or unusual instrumentation. Written with only four or five parts, plus percussion, each part may be played by a wide variety of instrument choices, creating performance opportunities for groups with imbalanced or incomplete instrumentation.

2024 Build-A-Band

The Sound Foundations series includes music for the beginning concert band. Contains publications in two grade levels (the Red series at grade ½, and Blue at grade 1), and featuring music in a wide variety of styles and programming choices, there’s no better collection of music for your first-year band! Sound Foundations Red uses only the first six notes learned in band instruction, and Blue extends the range to a full octave.

The Rising Band series includes music for the second year band. Contains publications in two grade levels (the Green series at grade 1 ½, and Maroon at grade 2), and continuing to encourage the musical development beyond the level of the Sound Foundations series.

The Barnhouse Command series has been a mainstay of educational band music for over a generation. Including works in a wide variety of styles and programming options. Featuring the very finest in music for the developing concert band, Command series publications are often found on repertoire lists from state music associations, but also features a wealth of music for holiday performances, novelty use, and virtually any type of performance.

Mischievous Behavior

“Beyond the Light and Darkness” is an energetic concert overture for mid-level bands. Masterful scoring makes the band sound much more difficult than it is. The bold opening theme is repeated in the main section, explored and developed with varying styles. The flowing middle section attracts the players and the audiences with beautiful melodies and harmonies. An excellent choice for both concerts and contests. First class!

Beyond the Light and Darkness

Who says bass instruments never get the melody? This classic march – and please forgive the ungrammatical title – gives the melody to the basses all the way through! Perhaps no other march is better suited to the “Build-A-Band” flex/limited instrumentation format. “Them Basses” is a guaranteed hit for musicians and audiences alike. Outstanding!

We've Got This!

“Low Bridge” is the perfect chart for the star bass trombonist in your big band! While written as a bass bone feature, it could alternately be used to feature tuba, bari sax or even bassoon!! Based on the old Low Bridge (Erie Canal) everyone learned in grade school, this Basie-style swinger features a sax soli and optional solo space for piano and/or guitar. This is a great change of pace tune for any festival or concert. Don’t miss it!

Low Bridge

Inspired by the famous “Chili Bowl” Sprint Car indoor races which are held annually, this lively march provides a teaching opportunity to introduce both minor and major tonalities within the same piece. Chili Bowl

The beautiful and stunning Navesink River is an estuary, approximately eight miles long and located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. This natural landmark inspired the composer to create a musical work that reflected the positive spirit that he found to be pervasive throughout the surrounding communities. When asked to describe the beauty of the river, people would often reply “simply breathtaking!” Musically rewarding!

Along The River's Shore

“Danza Magicala” is a set of magical and energetic dances. Opening with a mysterious woodwind motive complemented by creative percussion effects, brass joins in with a rousing answer to the quirky woodwind motives. A subdued ¾ section introduces and features the backing of the auxiliary instruments within the percussion section. A recapitulation quickly leads into the breathtaking finale of this piece. One of the most prolific of march composers, Carl Teike (TIE-kuh) is known for his military flavored martial works, and “The Conqueror” is one of his very best! Lisa Galvin’s latest programmatic work, “Excursion!” takes us for a ride on the Erie Canal. Drawing on themes from the well-known “Erie Canal” folk song, this frolicking work transforms that theme into a celebration of the famous stretch of waterway and those who built it. A piccolo soloist gives a nod to the Irish heritage of the workers, and a challenging clarinet solo harkens a raucous German polka that has this work driving to a fun and exhilarating ending! Excursion! (A Ride On The Erie Canal)
