Originally released on ‘Wide Open EP’ in 2007, The Gift receives a long-due remix treatment by the Theomatic clique. A spaced-out ‘Celestial Lullaby’ mix (seasoned with the delightful guitar verses by Tony K. of D-Pulse) is followed by a dancefloor-friendly version from Amberflame, culminating with ‘Mediterranean’ mix – the self-explanatory rendition by D-Pulse – a top-notch, two-piece excursion into the sound of contemporary balearica. The original re-mastered version is, of course, present and sounds as fresh and deep as back in the day.

If you’re setting out on an epic voyage to the electronic disco universe, it pays to recruit an experienced pilot. When it comes to intergalactic musical fusion, few are quite as experienced as cosmic disco pioneer and noted dancefloor explorer Daniele Baldelli.

Produced alongside friend and regular studio partner Dario Piana, Zero Gravity cannily updates Baldelli’s early ‘80s cosmic disco blueprint for the 21st century. We think that the EP contains some of his strongest music to date, with each of the three cuts offering subtle nods to the Italian maestro’s original Cosmic Club ethos. 

A-side “Infinity Machine” expertly combines many of Baldelli’s greatest musical inspirations into one mind-bending late night workout. Underpinned by a druggy, arpeggio style bassline, the track rises and falls through waves of funk-rock guitars, crunchy Clavinet lines and intertwined synthesizer solos. Throw in jammed-out electric pianos, and you have a near perfect fusion of cosmic disco and blazed funk-rock.

The producer’s long-held love of African rhythms surfaces on “If You Drive”, where bold acid bass, ricocheting percussion hits and weightless chords combine beautifully with starry melody lines and vintage analogue synthesizer motifs. It’s Afro-cosmic for the nu-disco generation.

A fine EP is completed by “Air Lock”, in which Baldelli and Piana pepper a rubbery, electrofunk-influenced groove with cascading synthesizer melodies, swirling pads and a swathe of fuzzy, eyes-closed guitar solos. It’s bold and assertive, but also as otherworldly and stratospheric as you’d expect from a pioneer at the peak of his powers.

A varied listener of dance music for over two decades, Jason Kendig (soundcloud) grew up in Detroit, engrossed in the music being played on the radio in the 90s. Later, he quickly climbed ranks as a DJ there holding residencies at clubs like Motor before moving to San Francisco. After many years soaking up the west coast's vibes a recent transition back to the midwest has found him in Chicago where he was invited to become a resident of the esteemed Smart Bar. While racking up airline miles playing around the world at festivals and intimate club nights alike, Jason is still a key member of the San Francisco collective known as Honey Soundsystem. Including members Jacob Sperber aka Jackie House, Josh Cheon and Robert Yang aka Bezier, the crew has been bringing creativity to SF’s gay underground house and techno community for the past ten years by not only curating their own club nights but publishing music with their label HNYTRX. This month Bolting Bits invites Mr. Kendig to the decks for the continuation of our MIXED BY series.

Veranda Culture is the new project from Melbourne artist and DJ, Francis Inferno Orchestra.

The next step in his musical journey sees the producer shift-direction with the tranquil and beautiful Veranda Culture, balancing New Age ambience, percussive pulse rides and echoing synths for an album that unfurls with a calming patience and soothing confidence throughout.

Recorded over a period of three years between Melbourne and London, FIO began making Veranda Culture after discovering the debut album of Greek-born, Sausalito-based composer Iasos – the New Age masterpiece ‘Inter-Dimensional Music’ LP — in Melbourne’s Liquorice Pie record store. James finished writing the album in London during a somewhat chaotic time in his life, when he was feeling the pressure-cooker environment of the city.

Issue 39 is a mostly improvisational live ambient set by Brooke Keller, recorded at Surface Tension X Infinite Beat during the Counterpulse Festival on March 17, 2018. The set was made using an Elektron Monomachine, Analog 4, Digitakt, Digitone, and a Pioneer DJM350. Some songs are live renditions of forthcoming Brooke Keller material on Perfect Location Records.

Brooke Keller has performed and recorded as odi me, dj cheaplocalgirl, and gayphex twin; she also makes a mean salsa.

It is with great pleasure that we bring you "Dance Ideas Volume 2", courtesy of Australian crew Beats of No Nation (@beatsofnonationradio). Initially kicking off as a radio show which was all about projecting class dance music to the masses, the franchise quickly expanded into a record label, which has since released five juicy EP's. Since launching this beautiful sonic creature in September 2015, BONN have hosted a ream of esteemed house personnel such as Mall Grab, Francis Inferno Orchestra, Fouk, Folamour and Seb Wildblood on their show. The Aussie lads (Dom Bird, Jad Lee and Sean Bate) have also received high praise from their radio show brothers and sisters in NTS, Xlr8r, Thump and Bradley Zero. With pats on the back from this grouping, it's pretty obvious they're doing plenty right!

This time round we've got ourselves a delectable little compilation which shines a light on works from Ibiza resident Corbi, Hackney's Lavan, Berlin's Jad & The and finally a spacey delight from West Australia's Olywok. Corbi's opener screams the setting sun. Combining clicking drumbeats, elevating strings and one very funked out guitar scale, this one's a lovely grind. Be sure to hang in there for that soothing vocal monologue to entwine you, 'it's all so quiet and beautiful with the whole city right out in front of my eyes'. Next up comes UK cat Lavan's The Right Thing (The Hardest Thing). What's most intriguing about this groovy slice is again the vocal sample chosen. At about the three minute mark a painter's voice enters the fray, discussing his method of attacking a canvas. Enveloping this artists words are soaring strings and languid bass notes, making up a clinic in relaxed house.

Our pick of the bunch and the premiere today is the third track, from the Germany-based Aussie lad, Jad & The (@jad-lee). Simplicity really can be oh so sweet. For just over seven minutes Jazz Hands You'll Never Understand carries us away with bongos and a spell-bounding piano loop. A jazzy cocktail of subtle sound that still encourages the boogie. Rounding out this crafty collection of dance thoughts comes Olywok's Maintain. Boarding that lo-fi train, Olywok works together a flurry of acid stabs, digitised bleeps and haunting synth notes into quite the meal. A record destined for the quintessential Bush Doof!

I’m Johan!
23 years old and just moved to Copenhagen, Denmark. I have been making music since i was around 12, I started out doing Hip-Hop beats and then later came into the electronic stuff. My musically influences is mostly from non-electronic music, I listen to a combination of jazz, funk, disco and rap. This tune feature a bass sample i found on a fusion record, then i started to fool around with a random chord progression and simple laid the drums unquantized down. Lately i have been really into fusion jazz, the more funky side of it and this was my attempt to combine it with house music.
