Underated Miscs

For our second mix, we are sharing KJ’s Falling Sleep Tape, which was originally performed live at the Sex Magazine Launch at Mast Books. Inspired by the release of Vincent Gallo’s Brown Bunny Soundtrack, the mix reimagines John Fruiscante’s score in an ambient loop that extends all the pleasure points of the experimental guitarist’s sounds. 
 
Sex: So this is your second sleep tape? Like a tape to fall asleep to?
KJ: Yeah, it’s actually how I started making ambient music. I lived on a really busy and loud street in 2014/2015 and started making loops and drones to blare and fall asleep to. The first few ended up being my first album ‘wake’.
Sex: You couldn’t find sounds that existed you could fall asleep to?
KJ: I could but very few were minimal enough to really quiet my head. The best I could find was willamette's ‘always in postscript’ which is how I got in touch with Own Records in Luxembourg.
All of their releases had a really lush, simple, emotional quality to them that I really loved. It was never busy or overly ornate.
Sex: Making music to soothe yourself physically and to eventually not listen to - I’ve never heard of anyone doing that before… and eventually, you’re not listening because you’re asleep. You can’t put on John Frusciante and use that to lull yourself to sleep, can you?
KJ: Not unless I fuck with it and put it in this mode. I did an edit of this great computer game music from Mario Paint where I pitch-shifted and arpeggiated the melodies that my friend put out on his label Falling Star Erotica. But even that was never really supposed to be anything, it was just for my bedroom.
Sex: Do you know anyone else that’s used it to fall asleep to?
KJ: Yeah, my friend Tony and my girlfriend Maddie. Some people just put it on really low as background music in their apartments, which I’d recommend for this one. Let it blend into the air.
Sex: How did you first find out about John Frusciante?
KJ: This documentary he was in before he got sober. 
Sex: Did you see that before you even heard his music?
KJ: I had obviously heard RHCP when I was really young. Was never really a fan but I always loved the guitar melodies. Discovering his solo stuff was the most massive musical discovery of my adult life. It captures the pain/pleasure of addiction better than any art I know of
Sex: Do you play the guitar?
KJ: I do, poorly.
Sex: You made this mix when the brown bunny soundtrack came out… I haven’t listened to it, saw the movie years ago… how much is your mix a departure?
KJ: Technically not much, just very subdued and dreamy. it registers very differently on a feeling level though i think. I like customizing little phrases of instrumental music for a spiritual function. I was fading different stems in and out at your release party moment to moment depending on how loud the crowd was.
Sex: I love that.
