PREMIERE – D. Yaroslav – A Warm Place (Whypeopledance)

Pour Rappel, Avatar invite en 1994 des artistes à détourner le téléphone, objet quotidien par excellence, et à l’utiliser comme diffuseur, comme enregistreur ou encore comme lieu d’échange. À titre de balises, Avatar leur pose les questions suivantes : comment transmuter la banalité des échanges sonores qui caractérisent le téléphone? Comment peut-on intervenir sur les sons qui le déterminent et sur les codes d’échange qu’il impose? Cette publication est une appropriation de l’outil téléphonique et une réflexion sur ses caractéristiques propres.

Rappel est un projet qui s’étend sur une période de deux ans au cours de laquelle les artistes occupent une ligne téléphonique réservée au projet, entre le 15 septembre 1994 et le 26 mai 1995. Le 7 janvier 1995, les artistes de Rappel investissent l’émission Les chants magnétiques de Mario Gauthier à la Chaîne culturelle de la Société Radio-Canada. Toutes les expérimentations sont enregistrées et compilées par Christof Migone d’Avatar. Rappel paraît finalement en 1996.

For Rappel, Avatar invited artists to orchestrate a détournement of the telephone—that epitome of ordinariness—using it to broadcast, record, or host exchanges. To guide the artists, Avatar asked the following questions: How might the telephone’s characteristically banal sound exchanges be transformed? What could be done to its identifying sounds and the codes of communication they impose? Rappel subverts the telephonic instrument and reflects on its fundamental nature.

Rappel was a two-year project. Artists worked with a dedicated phone line between September 15, 1994, and May 26, 1995. On January 7, 1995, they took over Mario Gauthier’s Les chants magnétiques on Radio-Canada’s Chaîne culturelle. Their experiments were recorded and compiled by Avatar’s Christof Migone. Rappel was at last released in 1996.

Flipside #12 invites Platida, a fresh face in the electronic music scene. Half Greek half Romanian, she slowly morphed from record collector and dancer to DJing. Currently based in Berlin, she mostly moves around minimal, electro & breakbeat, but you can also find her delve into ambient-downtempo sets at various radio shows and festivals. Tune in for her take on ambient and downtempo, showcasing her softer side.

Well, what is this? Simply said, this mix is a blend of ambient and downbeat music that is supposed to be both soothing and challenging. Listening back, it feels like diving deep into a fluorescent, sparkling abyss. 

I'm a fan of static and otherworldly drones and soundscapes. And so I've included key tracks from artists such as Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, The Necks, Madlib’s self-centred super group Yesterdays New Quintet and the great Jan Jelinek, among many others.

Pavel Grachev is Apollon Telefax, a creative electronic music artist known for his diverse range of skills as a producer, multi-instrumentalist, DJ, and illustrator. With a kaleidoscopical sonority, Pavel has already popped up on many vital outlets such as Duro, Sinchi, Calypso, Epicure, and Kaputt.wav, to name a few. Got curious? For his forthcoming adventure, Apollon lands on another important label: The super cool Barcelona-based Balearic Ensemble wide-opens its doors for his stunning “Deus From Drum Machine” EP, a four-track incursion through a few of his influences. Hip-Hop, Boogie, and 80s Pop layers get intertwined to enrich, just in time, our supply of summer anthems.  

Premiered here, “a rescrub of a certain USSR Hip-Hop icon, lifted up with kicks, claps, and a deft, jittering synth bass", according to the perfect description on the official PR text. On top, “digi flute riffs off staccato piano, setting up stirring, cyclical harmonies that frame the reclaimed acapella.” Some Happy Mondays' vibes here, we would say.
