Earlier this year London-based artist Hinako Omori released her debut full-length album, ‘a journey…’ to high critical acclaim. Today Hinako releases the 2nd of 6 new tracks taken from 'a journey...' in which she invites peers to rework the delicate, soothing sounds on the original record with 'a journey with friends...' to be released on July 29th 2022.

'a journey...' saw Omori experimenting with the physical and psychological effects of different frequencies, meditating on healing and soothing sounds and taking inspiration from the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, or forest-bathing. On 'a journey with friends...', the tracks offered a new perspective from Patricia Wolf, Matt Robertson, Akiko Haruna, Foodman and Coby Sey, as well as one track re-worked by Hinako herself. Speaking on the collaborations, she comments: "I am very happy and honoured to collaborate with close friends and favourite artists, and hearing reimagined versions of the album tracks being taken on an entirely new journey has been magical."

In the new track shared today Japanese producer 食品まつり a.k.a foodman has given ethereal, dreamlike song "Levitation" a beat-based rework, commenting: "I remixed Levitation and I felt the synthesiser sound of the track had a rhythmic feel to it, so I wanted to add my minimal percussion sounds to it to create a different look, it also felt like I was doing a session with Hinako. I also used the log drums used in amapiano to create a fast amapiano feel."

Omori adds: “I’m a huge fan of Foodman’s beautifully unique and eclectic sound worlds - his productions span such a magical variety of moods, rhythms and bpms, taking us through every emotion possible… every time I’ve had the honour of seeing his shows, he’s taken us on a wild and exhilarating adventure! I’ve always wanted to collaborate with Foodman, so I was so happy to hear that he was up for working on a remix of Levitation.

I’m in awe of how he completely transformed the droning slow nature of Levitation into a high energy amapiano-style track, hearing rhythms in the synth stems that I hadn’t heard before…”

Locked Concept's second drop of 2023 sees a return of Tellus to our Horizons release series.

The Horizons series looks to move away from the label's drum and bass roots, with the Loops EP as no exception. The four tracks range between 130 - 140 bpm and draw influence from across the spectrum of electronic music while still maintaining a signature Tellus sound.

It's not entirely fair to give Tellus full credit on this EP, as each track was started during a music production class at the high school he teaches at. Whether it was suggestions on which samples to use, recommendations on certain songs to draw influence from, input on the cover art, or simply the patience to sit through a tutorial on some component of producing, numerous high school students have had some form of influence or input on the creation of this four track EP.

C. Tellus - Can't Give Up [OUT NOW]

Known for his hardware-harnessing live shows and acidic jams, the Bristol-based Miles Otto’s ‘Skitter’ EP is alive with propulsive electro rhythms and dreamy synth melodies. ‘CV Swizzly’  grabs your attention with its wistful analogue tones and percussive crunch, before a burbling bassline burrows through the arrangement, while the 303-laced ‘Vectron’ takes cues from Detroit electro with its menacing riffs and eerie synth drifts. ‘Skitter’ itself subtly reveals its details layer by layer, with crisp drum machine hits and low tones opening out into mystic harmonies, and Plant43 recasts ‘CV Swizzly’ in his distinct image, adding metallic synth bass and urgent keys to finish the EP in fine style.

Simon Hafner aka Sun People is well known to fans of fast tempos, having released music on labels such as Exit Records, Rua Sound and Through These Eyes. Hafner presents a wide range of music and guest mixes on his monthly Sub FM radio show and is also releasing music and doing A&R for the label Defrostatica.

His latest cassette on the Guides label, titled Joyful Discontent, is a tribute to minimalism, referencing the works of Frank Bretschneider and Mark Fell. The starting point for this release was a JMT VDR-1 drum synthesizer, characterised by its intuitive aspects, its limited sonic capacities and the challenge to stretch the machine's possibilities. This one instrument informs the structure of the album, fixed in tempo, track and total length. Reducing his tools to a bare minimum, Hafner explicitly refers to specific genre traditions inherent in this radical form. Structurally and sonically, the spirit of clicks & cuts (e.g., Komet’s ‘Rausch’) can be heard, as well as influences from dub, ambient and minimalist drum&bass and footwork.

In his thinking, however, Hafner goes further. The idea of interlocking all the pieces, complementing the overall grid of constraints, provides the frame for a playful exploration. The result was also fuelled by intuitive action, such as when a single gesture and decision changes the direction of a process that takes place in real time. When composing, despite the track’s live act structure, he produced recordings that could function as parts of a jigsaw puzzle that can be rearranged freely in any order, thus opening the way for a reinterpretation of the whole. This is also why the album will be available in two versions, both as a mix of combined tracks, and as eight individual pieces that make up the whole.

Despite so many formal constraints, Joyful Discontent still sounds accessible. The pieces produced by Hafner move in the direction of Mark Fell’s compositional approaches, where music is devoid of evoking emotion, rather, aiming for a neutral and non-imposing environment for the listener.
