What's the best gift you could give this New Years? For the Heath Mill Recordings crew, a brand new single from one of the label's rising talents, Matter, ticks all the boxes. Last time we heard from the Melbourne-based Matt Doyle was the early September release 'Lonely Robot', a 121bpm production that made for an impressive debut offering from an artist that has already secured releases with Proton, Particles, Balkan Connection, and Mistique. 

'Energon' launches with a supple shaker/kick combo that carefully blossoms in to an emotive production lead by sky-bound synths and an inviting atmosphere. This massive production clocks in just under an astounding 10 minutes long and sees Matter use every inch of its sonic fabric to employ a wide range of effects and emotions. If minimalistic bodies of work are your thing, the underlying grooves and powerful melodies of 'Energon' should be more than enough to lull even the pickiest of critics in to a blissful state of pure joy.

With all the rigour and complexities, simplicity and quality is often lost within the overbearing details. Too much is forlornly thrown together, and not enough takes hold.

With this in mind, Crossfrontier Audio and Sonic Future have collaborated together to provide you with a series of releases - aptly named Themes.

Each release will focus around a unique structure, unfolding beauty to have as your own, to indulge upon, and to take with you wherever... lasting intricacy built through simplicity.

Talking about the project, Sonic Future added 'Sometimes we get overloaded by tracks with tons of amazing effects, but no actual musical meaning. For the theme series, I decided to get back to basics. The idea is to present the music around specific melodies or chord progressions, giving a more minimalistic approach based on melodic themes, and building the tracks around motivic developments. The result is certainly more intimate, but I hope it resonates with today´s music.'

Benwaa creates driving bass-lines set against crunchy percussion that leads us to anything but a sepia soundscape. Tension and percussive grooves hold a movement that's somehow deep and yet uplifting too, the same with the hopeful and reaching for the new dawn vibe of the melodic that grows and weaves into the piece.

We're treated to not one, but two wonderful remixes.

The first is from Gibbon regular, Drew Miller. He presents a live feeling edit, and draws on the darker side of the original for his inspirations. Wooden percs reminiscent of the original leads us through a path to a synth'd out glade occupied by a sparkling mystery before taking us back among the trees for the furthering of our adventure.

Carl Higson finalizes the remixes with his interpretation. Literally taking us outdoors to join the inhabitants of his auditory woodlands. Birds sampled against distant trains and the chugging of the building elements into what becomes a rather beautiful psychedelic journey altogether, embracing the more colourful side of the original, Higson skillfully creates a trip we can all share together.

To round off the EP, Benwaa gives a progression of the original track with his B-side Rainbow Woodlands. An altogether more emotive feeling piece that feels organic throughout and a familiarity in its melancholic tones which hark of what only the Welsh can describe as Hiraeth.

The artwork for this release is provided by Xflo:w, a world renowned and award winning photographer based in Berlin. Clinique Recordings was founded in 2012 by the artist from Murmansk (Russia) - zweitausendeins Traum (ex. Nick Quadrat from Breeze & Quadrat duo). Label is focused on Progressive House and its subgenres. But the main thing is that the each track must have a piece of the soul of its author. It allows music to drive you mad and blow your mind.
