This mix was recorded at Moontribe’s 26 year anniversary gathering. This circumstances around this recording are rather unique, as during the days leading up to this event my dog of 10+ years passed away while on a road trip with myself, my wife and my daughter, as we were on our way to this event. The week leading up to this event was also my wife and I's first year wedding anniversary, father’s day, and also my birthday. This three hour set was originally intended as a birthday celebration, but on a personal level, this set was more of a eulogy to my dog Lilo. She was the really the best dog I could ever ask for, and our family will forever miss her.

I was so f'ing tired, spent, sad and pissed.  Channeled it into this relentlessly dirty raucous set from Tuesday night at OT.  (more below)

What's the "bamboo disaster" as it's affectionately called?  Here's the long version of you want a deep dive.  We had two projects to choose from to add to the production that year. One was a bigger version of the Synergy Dome we erected in 2003, and the other was an elevated stage that Rich had designed that was supposed to be in the shape of a star, aka the 'Star Stage'. Feeling that we wanted to push ourselves hard this year, and take 2008 off from any projects, we decided to do both. Spoiler alert - bad idea.

The stage was conceived to be a great platform for a large group of performers, as it provides, in many ways, an ultimate performance venue because it sits 10 feet above the crowd. It would be largely self funded by Rich (taking loans from anyone that would help, parents included), with about 25% of the costs shared by the camp.  Out on the playa, due to a design snag, Rich decided to 'open' the stage and not enclose the 'star', though it was delayed getting up because of the problems with the Bamboo Synergy Dome..
The dome, this time made out of bamboo instead of steel, was supposed to be about a 100 feet in diameter. Myself and Dutch led the construction following the same design plans Rich devised in 2003, modified for the bigger size, at a warehouse in West Oakland. Simultaneously while one team was working at the Box Shop on the Star Stage, another dedicated team busted ass to get the bamboo dome pieces done, complete with a hellish night of loading the 50 foot truss pieces onto a flat bed semi trailer right before we left for the playa.  On playa, lots of build challenges.   Just when we thought we'd have to scrap it due to running out of time, we problem solved and were ready to lift. We used 2 patient cranes from Art Services, and our own forklift to bring it in the air. We were almost there.....

The Bamboo Dome is probably one of the all time great failed projects in BM history.  During lifting, a rope got caught under a tire, a key truss broke, and the project was still possible but not safe so we chose to scrap it.  Flushing $25k and a summer's worth of work down the drain.  It hurt.

Playing at DISTRIKT has been a goal of mine since I started as a DJ, as I’ve spent many dusty afternoons enjoying tunes in the dust here. Having the chance to spin from noon-1pm on Thursday was an incredible way to kick off the day – it gave me a unique opportunity to get people out of bed, moving and grooving, and ready to dance for hours to come. This set was so much fun to curate, craft and share with a growing dancefloor, and playing on the legendary DISTRIKT soundsystem was an absolute treat.

For the second mix in our Umbrella Weekend 2020 mix series on the Overcast, we've got one of our secret weapons, Seph Martin. One of the OG Umbrella Crew going all the way from the beginning, Seph kicked off their highly cognitive music career while at UC San Diego, (while also earning a degree in Cognitive Science 🧠) becoming a renowned DJ on campus making a name at house parties and the infamous lunch spot, Roundtable Pizza. Seph taught many of our own what's up on the ones and twos, and is now one of the most accomplished producers on our team. This incredible set, characterized by heavy alien vibes, is made up up roughly 50% originals. Seph is a low-key person, which is why you might not see them at the club or bar as regularly as the rest of us, but that's paid off big in terms of spending hard work in the studio which is making heads turn from artists and listeners alike! We hope you enjoy the set! 🎶☂️

While the moon hasn’t quite reached it’s New phase in the current cycle 🌘, I wanted to acknowledge the potent 11:11 portal with an extra special release by a shaman of sound in his own right, Malok - founder of Social Study.

In numerology, 1 is represented by the magician. The magician, in Tarot, is known to use his spiritual and physical tools to manifest something from which there is absolutely nothing. With 11, the magician’s manifestation powers are doubled, where dreams are quickly turned into reality. What will you manifest today?

My intentions were to set the mix bpm’s at 111 and create a mix that was profound in nature. Something that that reflected light and dark , analogue and organic. Something that could be listened to at the beginning of the night, or the very end. And I wanted all styles of music I play to be present. From deep and organic to wordly and melodic, spanning house and electronica.
