The Concept

Two foundational releases from Toronto's Strobe Records get a well-deserved reissue on the Clone Classic Cuts series, spotlighting a pivotal moment in North American dance music. While often overshadowed by the Detroit and New York scenes, Toronto's underground in the early '90s was brewing its own potent blend of house and techno - and these tracks are prime examples of that cross-border synergy.

The Hayden Andre Project's contributions sit at the perfect intersection of tribal house rhythms and the emotive, machine-driven pulse of early Detroit techno. There's a raw elegance here - a sense of deep groove layered with just the right amount of percussive tension. It's no surprise that these tracks became staples in the crates of DJs both then and now. The production feels timeless, with hypnotic arrangements that still command the floor over three decades later.

On the flip, Kingdom Come, another alias of Ron Allen, delivers lush, blissed-out house music that channels the soulful energy of New York's golden era while adding a uniquely Canadian sensibility. Allen's piano work, layered with warm pads and swinging drums, gives these tracks an unmistakable vibe - equal parts deep house ecstasy and garage swagger. It's the sound of 3 a.m. euphoria, of packed dance floors and emotional peaks.

This reissue not only shines a light on the underrated Toronto scene but also remind us just how global and interconnected house music was becoming in the early '90s. For both collectors and newcomers, these are essential cuts - testaments to a moment when boundaries between cities and styles were blurred in the name of dance.

PREMIERE : Militsa - VOLUPTA

Anna Dubowick’s sophomore EP on clipp.art is an intense lean into ambient, IDM and leftfield electro, moonlight by an affectionate tribute to her adopted home, the West Coast city of Angeles. Each track unravels like a dear diary entry, dark seduction and sweet melancholy mix as she digs deeper into her own re-invention. “Elsewhere” like LA, is a place where anybody can arrive and become whoever they want to be. As long as the sun is shining.

1. Sunset Blvd
"An ode to the city itself, Sunset Blvd captures the soul of Los Angeles - a sprawling, contradictory, and electrifying metropolis where energy pulses through everything and everyone. 
It’s a vibrant dance of life, a reminder that in this city, possibility is infinite. Like a scene from Terrence Malick’s "Knight of Cups" : You see the palm trees? They tell you anything's possible.
You can be anything... do anything... start over."

2. Elsewhere
"Transport yourself to a radiant, sunlit day in Los Angeles, where golden rays dazzle your face, and a gentle breeze tousles your hair as you cruise in a convertible. The warmth of sunlight graces your skin, while the gleaming reflections off the car's chrome blind your gaze. 
In the air, notes of cedar wood and vetiver mingle with the delicate aroma of niche fig, perfectly paired with a sparkling glass of champagne at Chateau Marmont. 
A serene calm envelopes you, broken only by the sprawling view of the city from the hills - a subtle reminder of the bustling life just beyond the horizon.”

3. Witch
"A plunge into a mysterious nocturnal realm, where slow motion unfolds under the glow of neon lights reflecting on a vintage leather coat. The distant echo of heels clicking on the pavement stirs curiosity, enveloping you in an atmosphere heavy with intrigue. It’s an ode to the liminal - a space where reality and dreams blur, much like in David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive. 
Here, you find yourself entangled in dark seduction, tinged with a sense of sweet melancholy - a hypnotic dance that lingers in the subconscious, leaving you suspended between the known and the unknown.”

4. Sundaze
"Enter a luminous haze where the sun blinds so intensely, it renders your surroundings almost imperceptible. Details blur as your eyes are drawn to the sparkling reflections of water in a pool, high above. 
Laughter echoes, people gather, and a soft breeze brushes against your sun-warmed skin, carrying a hint of sweet sophistication. In this fleeting moment, life feels perfectly aligned - like you’re exactly where you’re meant to be, in a harmony so delicate it threatens to slip away before you can fully grasp it.”

Rising French producer and live act Akyki is out on Quinoa Cuts, for the label’s 5th instalment. Delivering a quacking slice of summer, the ‘Egyptian Geese’ EP offers a groovy and multifaceted narrative that will get your backsides jiggling like uncle Waldo’s.

Techy-er than previous references on the label, the release doesn’t leave out some essential hallmarks of the Quinoa sound: playful vocals, quirky breaks, signature enveloping basslines, and a breadth of sound that finds its cohesion in a warm, comfy place.

Since the very first days of our journey we tried to get a nice balance between top-notch players and rising artists basing our dogma in releasing good music for the service of the dancefloor. That’s why we are more than pleased with our next release, and we want to give a nice welcome to Billingy and his single ‘ARD’. Tittle track ‘ARD’ plays a raw-house kick with sharp and swinging hats that set an actual and demanded 2020-beat. A 909-rimshot plays as main character during the track adding a nice feel, that is awesomely answered with a nice open-hat. Another outstanding element to take into account is the great MC vocal that is what really makes the difference in ‘ARD’.
