Ele tem emoções, raiva e felicidade. Ele tem memórias, como cenas da sua infância sendo reproduzidas diante de você. E ele tem essa narrativa constante em voz alta nos seus pensamentos conscientes. 
No cerne deste filme está você, experimentando tudo isso diretamente. Este filme é o seu fluxo de consciência, o sujeito da experiência da mente e do mundo. Todo sistema pode ter algum grau de consciência. A consciência pode ser universal. 
Essa visão é às vezes chamada de panpsiquismo: "pan" para tudo, "psych" para mente. Todo sistema é consciente, não apenas humanos, cachorros, ratos, moscas, mas até mesmo micróbios, partículas elementares. Até mesmo um fóton tem algum grau de consciência. A ideia não é que os fótons sejam inteligentes ou estejam pensando. Mas o pensamento é que talvez os fótons possam ter algum elemento de sensação subjetiva bruta, algum precursor primitivo da consciência."
