Premiere: Cabaret du Ciel - Great Plains (Ssiege Aero Remix)

Splitradix is the moniker of Irish producer Stephen Hennelly. Prior to taking on the Splitradix title for 2014’s Glassilaun Memento EP, Hennelly was known variously as DJ Gaillimh and skkatter - both names which should ring a bell for those heads who had an eye on the scene in the 2000s. 

Since Glassilaun Memento, Hennelly’s brand of ‘​​Gaeltachtstep’ - ‘Gaeltacht’ meaning those areas of Ireland where the Irish language is still actively spoken - has graced both the Virtual Urban and 030303 labels. He continues to rep his area with 51º53'43"Nord 8º25'09"Waldorf, a four-track EP which marks the debut Splitradix drop on Sheffield’s Central Processing Unit imprint. This is a textured, dynamic quartet of productions, one which uses the core sounds of electro, acid and IDM-techno as a base from which Splitradix can explore some fabulously idiosyncratic production tendencies.

‘3350 Beach Electronic’ is an exhilarating first flurry. Splitradix tracks are cut with a bevvy of analogue hardware, and as such it’s no surprise that the track is alive with the sound of busy machinery. Beginning with a squelching Fenix synth, we soon find multiple melody lines coalesce into a melodious melange. Synths chatter and sparkle, counter-melodies slip-side around the bass, and bright, welcoming pads are anchored by piston-precise 808s. It’s a stargazing delight, one that comes off like a souped-up take on the Lone sound, and a cracking introduction to 51º53'43"Nord 8º25'09"Waldorf.

Second cut ‘Zassenhaus Lemma’ kicks off in a Posthuman mode, with a delay-drenched 303 bassline meandering atop some chunky house drums. However, as acidic as the track sounds, Splitradix finds space in this crowded genre field with some brilliantly unusual harmony choices and zippy lead-lines that channel Discovery-era Daft Punk. 

Much like ‘3350 Beach Electronic’, ‘Zassenhaus Lemma’ is a perpetual motion machine, gathering synths and drums as it rolls ever onward. The same can be said of following number ‘PS31 Sideways Rain’, but this joint also coaxes out some more cerebral elements of the Splitradix sound. Whereas ‘3350 Beach Electronic’ found us racing through the cosmos, ‘PS31 Sideways Rain’ glides gracefully across the astral plane, the synths cascading over one another while the pads look up to the night sky. It sets the listener up perfectly for rose-tinted closer ‘PS31 Moxie', a tune which channels both prime Space Dimension Controller and Automatic Tasty’s recent CPU drop The Future Is Not What It Used To Be.

London based collective Natural Selection mark 10 years since their inception with the launch of their label, kicking things off with this exquisitely curated 23-track VA compilation. NS001 brings together some of the most respected names in techno and electro, including The Advent, Jeroen Search, Kamikaze Space Programme, Somatic Responses, Versalife aka Conforce, Annie Hall, Operator, DJ Skull & more. Every artist on the compilation has played an important role, or had a connection, in one way or another, to the label / collective over their colossal 10 year journey.

Natural Selection are well known for bridging the heavier spectrum of techno, electro and acid sounds with new, experimental style and form. You can always expect the most cutting-edge, hard-hitting, underground electronics at Natural Selection events, which have gained notoriety for daring lineups and extreme diversity in sound. It’s clear to see that this ethos remains uncompromised for their logical extension into a record label.

Natural Selection will celebrate 10 years and the label launch on 6th November at FOLD with an 18 hour long, extended event featuring The Fear Ratio, The Advent, Kamikaze Space Programme and more.

The party is also in aid of Mind - Natural Selection will be donating 100% of their profits from the event to the mental health charity.

Tomas Ruiz, aka RUSSELL, is a self-made electronic music artist that has been active in Santiago de Chile since 2014. RUSSELL's multi-tasking role in helping launch the Cazeria Cazador (CZCZ) label was a big step for his career in the role of public relations, producer and DJ. The collectives cultural impact in its native Chile since forming in 2015 was significant. They subvert the conservative attitudes dominating their homeland, fighting against artistic stagnation with illegal underground parties in Santiago's abandoned buildings and forward-thinking releases that channel a melting pot of influences. 

RUSSELL burst into broader consciousness in 2017, gaining attention on the international stage supporting renowned artists such as Nicolás Jaar, J.Albert, Tomas Urquieta, DJs Pareja and releasing a series of albums and collaborations with various Chilean artists and labels over the past two years. He now joins up with the enthralling Swiss-based label, LBR Records, whose mission is to contribute to electronic music producers' artistic, technical and promotional development. 

'Sombras' is an eight-piece album full of broken electronic textures and emotions. The album's sound shows a unique touch, emotional pads, and breakbeats critical elements. RUSSELL shows us a futuristic proposal in the moment of releasing new material with no boundaries of sound. This release is a perfect example of his artistic vision, with a mixture of experimental electro sounds and thumping techno rhythms that carry a rare sense of frisky fluidity.

The project name »A / B« references several aspects of the cooperation: The initials of the artist names Akaroid and BYDL, the distance from A to B and the A and B sides of the tape cassette. The two artists worked in a shared folder in their home studios in Berlin and Vienna without ever meeting or making explanatory phone calls. Each musician brought in his own elements, samples, sound designs and production techniques in order to play in new parts using the ping-pong process, to arrange them or to change the material of the predecessor through manipulation and processing. The sound generation and the sound design took place via analog / digital modular synthesizers as well as in the laptop or via conventional miking of acoustic instruments (percussion). The entire EP is supported by a sense of cooperation and innovative ways not to lose common creativity to isolation, even when contact is prohibited.
The basis of all tracks consists of extractions from field recordings. The ambiences and original notes obtained in this way (mainly from Vienna and Berlin - A / B) were not only processed with effects, but also used via MIDI programming to output beat, melody or harmony. As a result, the recordings fit more organically into the track structure and are supported by the arrangement of those elements that are more familiar to the hearing of the recipients. On the one hand, the title of the track reveals the location of the respective field recordings used in the track and, on the other hand, the one or two-digit number in brackets shows how often the project was sent from A to B before it was finalized, which provides a unique insight into the artists way of production.
