David Agrella returns on his newly-minted Agrellomatica Records with three fresh interpretations on ‘Robot Romance’.

DJ, producer and recording artist David Agrella is an artist with a growing reputation as a versatile selector. Showcasing his musical inspirations across genres via his ‘Agrellomatica’ slot on London radio station Bloop, the first release on his recently launched eponymous imprint gained support from artists including Moxie, Korea Town Acid, and Jane Fitz alongside high praise from the likes of Ransom Note, Vinyl Factory and Bolting Bits. Up next, he returns to welcome a fresh set of material for the label’s second release, ‘Robot Romance’.
‘Electric Nostalgia’ is an utterly addictive track that draws you in right from the start as swirling synths and subby pads float above crisp breaks. ‘Robot Romance’ slowly intensifies with fluttering chords that feel weightless as the even kick drums meet an elastic bassline, providing a propulsive gem. Agrella’s Transition Mix of ‘Fallin’ which closes the EP with pummeling drums and muscular acidic melodies, which are integral to the peak-time feel of the track.

Life could be turned upside down in the blink of an eye. There was no time to think or plan, they had to act now before it was too late. All they'd worked for, built and collected would have to be left behind; their homes, their belongings, everything they owned. Time was of the essence, their lives were no longer safe. Their destination was uncertain, but leaving was their only option. 

Tamburi Neri share their next release Bolle di Dolore (translating as Bubbles of Pain) on Adiel's Danza Tribale imprint. A return to the label for the Italian duo, following last year's Urlo EP which included four interpretations courtesy of Marcel Dettman, the release is a response to the emotions that come with the events happenings around us in the world, specifically those who have fled their homes in search of a better life. Sonically it's a journey through ominous, unfurling atmospheres punctuated by tribalistic rhythms, which comes to a close with a remix of the title track from Swedish-South African four-piece Off The Meds who add their signature guttural tones.

I Do It For My Mental Health

From the very first track, it’s clear that Abby Echiverri’s debut, the “Ab Initio” EP is something different and rare: a polished and fresh interpretation of electronic music that incorporates classic electro squelches with intricate broken beats and expansive synthesizer zone-outs. Although this is her first EP, Abby has extensive history as a musician, sound engineer, DJ and VJ. Her current trajectory started early in childhood when she was classically trained in violin, flute, piano and vocals, cementing music as a part of her daily life. In high school she picked up turntables and began collecting records, eventually moving to NYC to study recording engineering and perform in post-punk bands, and became a regular at Wierd and The Bunker at a very young age. Since then, Echiverri has devoted her professional hours to engineering, maintaining, and manufacturing audio equipment for studios and clubs around the world. 

This record’s name “Ab Initio” means “from the beginning” or “from first principles”, invoking a propulsive leap into the future and also perhaps including an element of the eponymous. When we asked her to tell us more about the process of creating these hardware-based jams, Abby explained: “It all stems from my own experiences on the dancefloor and wanting to recreate that for other people. I want to make music that rewires the brain: music that is challenging, yet groovy... repetitive, yet evolving. An aural psychedelic. It's a lofty goal - I'm still working on it.” If Ab Initio is one of her first steps towards that goal then we can’t wait to see what happens next.

Distant Worlds returns to the fray for 2021, following the runaway success of last year’s Guidance Release EP from Cignol. Here we see the label reaching the lofty heights of their tenth release with an absolute beauty from Malta-based Sound Synthesis, himself fresh from a mighty fine run of form of late.

Melodic, warm electro with heart tugging melodies and gut punching beats are all present and correct: all but the coldest hearts will be melted by the euphoric chords, attention to detail and keen ear for a melodic hook prevalent throughout this fine release. Energetic yet emotional, Sound Synthesis succeeds here in bringing elements of acidic electro and transcendent soul tinged braindance sensibilities to the pot. 

Lead track, ‘Planet Hope’ is a deeply personal journey with a musical message of positivity wrapped up in the utopian optimism of all the finest electronica. ‘Thinking of You’ continues in the same vein, all beautiful atmospheres and melodic flourishes culminating in a masterful soul-tinged breakdown. 

Flip over for another assault on the emotional jugular with ‘Transmission of Life’ before rounding off with the acid tinged psychedelic hypnotism of ‘Spiral Reverb’. Distant Worlds does it again with a perfect marriage of retro futuristic techno soul, having found the perfect partner to deliver it in Sound Synthesis.
