After a successful project launch in 2022 with releases on KD Raw and Motech, veteran underground producer Nico K aka Closer Orbit delivers a slice of dark funk and gritty analog synth work with the “All I Need EP”.  This 2-tracker, via courtesy of his own eponymous imprint, comes on the heels of an intensely productive studio period.  A vocal edit sampling a seminal Nas track anchors the title cut 'All I Need,’ as a metallic arp grinds away— while 'Warped' is marked by warbling, off-kilter synths and a heavy, insistent pulse, showcasing his live techno production style.

Marked by progression and constant evolution, Nicolaas Black unveils his newest project, Closer Orbit.  Honed by years of studio sessions and dj sets under several monikers, he is known for eclectic productions, remixes, edits, and electric performances. Rooted in a love of 90s artists and engineering experimental industrial music in the early 2000s. For this EP, Closer Orbit’s sets reflect a colorful and vibrant journey. 

On the ‘No Games Ep’, Luis brings electrifying elements that are filled with a vibrant techno style. His style is adored by fans around the world and with reaching number 1 in Beatport for his EP “Sensation” [KD Raw] in Feb 2021, Luis has been regularly featured in Spotify’s most-followed techno playlists. His release has been on known international labels like KD Raw, JAM, Tronic, Analytic Trail, and many others. Luis’ tracks have also been played by techno titans such as Carl Cox, Sam Paganini, Richie Hawtin, Amelie Lens, Kaiserdisco, Jay Lumen, MarkAntonio, among many others.

Detroit’s Motech Records welcomes Nicolaas Black to the fold, as he unveils his newest project Closer Orbit with the ‘Rave Things EP’.

Nico has a long musical history, from his exposure to opera and classical at a young age to the experimental explosion in the 90s via artists like Front 242, KMFDM, 808 State, Nitzer Ebb and NIN. After attending his first illegal rave in Detroit, he learned to mix vinyl and the progression to a dancefloor aesthetic was sealed. His instinct led to a 6 year sojourn in Chicago, where he was fortunate to meet some of the seminal pioneers of house, and began assisting studio sessions at Slang Music Group - Frankie Knuckles, Paul Johnson, Joe Smooth, Ron Carroll, Craig Loftus and Vince Lawrence, amongst others. Later he worked for Mark Picchiotti at Blueplate Records, rounding out his 4-on-the-floor education. He also engineered a “Pigface” album for Martin Atkins of P.I.L. fame, solidifying his industrial roots.

Our second premiere of the day comes from Closer Orbit as he releases an EP on Detroit’s Motech Records. 'Rave Things' is an ode to Detroit, as Closer Orbit channels the classic slamming groove, combined with deep and soulful undertones. 

Detroit’s Motech Records welcomes Nicolaas Black to the fold, as he unveils his newest project Closer Orbit with the ‘Rave Things EP’. A four track project that see Nico return to the roots of his sound and to the basics of techno funk. 

Nico has a long musical history, from his exposure to opera and classical at a young age to the experimental explosion in the 90s via artists like Front 242, KMFDM, 808 State, Nitzer Ebb and NIN. After attending his first illegal rave in Detroit, he learned to mix vinyl and the progression to a dancefloor aesthetic was sealed.

Countless DJ sets, raves, festivals and recording sessions later, he is now based in Los Angeles and stays committed to the studio and impromptu surf missions. A consummate producer, under several monikers his music and sets bridge the width of the underground dance music spectrum, from Chicago to Detroit, Berlin to LA; from techno to electro, jazz to funky house, disco, acid, industrial and beyond. His reproduction of Fela Kuti’s ‘Zombie’ remains a seminal warehouse favourite and 2020’s ‘The Sun’ has to-date racked up well over a million plays on SoundCloud.

Priding himself on constant evolution and growth, he presents his Closer Orbit incarnation. ‘Rave Things EP’ releases on 17 June, and features 4 new tracks that draw from his many influences including the monster house opener ‘Piano Track’ and melodious ‘State Of (I Still Believe)’, to the Detroitesque ‘Rave Things,’ before the deep and synthy ‘Foldspace’ closes this varied and reflective EP.

'Rave Things' is a peak time dance-floor bliss, as Nico works a 909 to the fullest and stabs and strings simmer around the front of the tracks soundscape. This is techno at it's rawest, funkiest and best.

During the pandemic when the world was off from events and people had uncertainty setting in, Closer Orbit (aka Nicolaas Black) yearned for rave vibes, like the rest of us.  

Closer Orbit created the track “Piano Track” to push the desire for listeners to want to rave again and yearn for the dancefloor that was denied of during the pandemic. The track manifests the energy of an old skool type rave via the early 90s era. 

Filled with hints of soulful elements, warm chords, distinctive basslines, and classic house piano riffs, the track presents itself with the perfect blend of nostalgic elements that take groove-like energy to the next level. 

You can expect "Piano Track” to feasibly shift from funky to raw, much like the relationship between house & techno.
