Amadeus sees it’s catalog graced yet again by New Zealand outfit Chaos In The CBD. The kiwi brothers, birthed Ben & Louis Helliker-Hales, are no new faces to the label, or the wide variety of genre-bending acronyms they encompass. Having recently relocated from tropical Auckland to damp London earlier this year, the two take their productions along with them in their latest efforts, 816 To Nunhead.

Title track and aside, “816 To Nunhead,” is tinged with what’s left of summer. A nostalgic tune built for the sun and soaked in funk. It’s a track reminiscent of early french disco, almost as if built for the two robots themselves. Guitar plucks and hi hats flow seamlessly throughout the tune, aided by a glorifying vocal, “I would like to think of my music as just an extension, an extension of me of today or whatever.”

What emotion of freedom and escape evoked on the Aside can be contrasted on the flip, “78 To Stanley Bay,” a tune built behind the ever looming theme of loneliness. Accompanied by a live trumpet courtesy of Isaac Aesili, ’78 To Stanley Bay’ tells us a story, or rather a journey, built behind dirty hats and delayed keys. This is a track fashioned for everywhere but the club, and we absolutely love that.

More new members in the Toy Tonics family: JOEL HOLMES & CODY CURRIE joined the Berlin crew. They will release a couple of EPs. 

You might know Joel Holmes: American jazz pianist and keyboard player who has been member of Roy Hargrove’s legendary Grammy nominated band, but also is part of Carl Craig’s synthesizer ensemble. Joel is living in Berlin now, where he is involved in the new vibrant Neo-Jazz scene. (Yes! Berlin used to be a Techno city, but it’s becoming kind of a Jazz town now!) 
In Berlin Joel throws monthly jam sessions (the Urban Base Jam) where the creme de la creme of Berlin ex-pad jazz musicians meets up. American, Europeans.. Crazy things can happen here. Like when Erykah Badu played Berlin in 2019 and her complete band came to jam at Joel’s session after their gig.

Joel now takes the next step: he teamed up with Cody Currie: 24 year old London born talent, who already made some waves in the house scene. Cody is known as a stylized producer, with a unique recognisable sound. Much of his craft was homed in studying a bachelors in music in London. His most known work by now might be a jazzy reinvention of ‘Devils Shoestring’ with over half a million plays on SC and YT. With his new works Cody is coming away from sampling, Working only with live instrumentation.

Joel & Cody both  live in Berlin now where they met Toy Tonics head honcho Mathias „Kapote“ Modica. And when they met there was a vibe. All three have their roots and jazz music share similar ideas about how dance-music should evolve and could sound in 2020. (In fact Kapote Modica studied jazz piano, too and has been playing in bands before getting into electronic music)

Joel & Cody are working in a great Berlin basement studio, at Cody’s home. Working on a new way of combining jazz-funk with real musicianship, MPC grooves and live instruments to get a new , fresh approach on  dance-music. And there will be a lot coming up in the next years.

Live Ones returns with a belting new 12’’ EP featuring five deep and sultry tracks from five artists hailing from four different countries. Windows (formally DJ Windows XP) kicks things off with their familiar dusty and melancholic drive, pulling all the right heartstrings on ‘I Wanted To Share My Feelings But You Kept Talking’. Label owner Lorca’s ‘Sirens’ follows this on a similar, ravey vibe with stomping kicks, breaks, breast-beating string samples and bleeps.

The flip side sees the talented and experienced Intr0beatz in amazing form utilizing rich, orchestral strings and his signature house grooves to produce the infectious ‘For The Love’. Keith Lorraine (also known as Baby Rollen) of London is up next with the emotionally rich ‘Wild Flower’. The track builds nicely into the final cut ‘Dreams’ from Canada’s Mathew Ferness. Here we see the artist at his best, using looping vocals and piano stabs to great effect, completing an EP that will work just as well in your headphones as it will on the dancefloor.
