To close out 2021 and usher in 2022 we are very excited to present the final mix of the year from Hong Kong based selector Ani Phoebe. It's spicy, cosmic and groovy with a latin twist. Ani draws on her multi-cultural and multi-lingual background in her sets, growing up in NYC, Rio De Janeiro & Hong Kong, she has always been attracted to the weird and oddball side of dance music. 

Ani is a resident at The Lot Radio (NY) @thelotradio where she runs a monthly show called Parallel Worlds, dedicated to diggers from different subcultures around the world.

“Utulna is ten musical sketches made in different cities and countries. Ten musical sketches of love, nature, and travel.” This is how Patapenka describes the album. He, like the classical Impressionists, traveled to beautiful, picturesque places during his travels in Europe, to his musical plein air to get impressions and embody them through the sound of slow beats, short piano passages, and enveloping bass.

Patapenka is a musician, producer, teacher, and founder of the midi.by (Ableton School in Minsk), which help to grow creatively many famous contemporary Belarusian musicians. You can also know him as Lipski and Gip Gipz, whose tracks were released on the previous Radio Plato label compilation Rajsn-elektronik: Jewish-Belarusian electronic music.

Welcome y’all to our 61st instalment of the Fonia Radio Show and with that to our special mega package to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our show.
We would have never thought that out of the one-off idea to just play our favourite jazz records in a radio station would become a regular show not to mention a show with so many guests!! Kuwaiti Samri is Gulf folk music with a gentle 2/4 sway and a soft frame-drum pulse. In many gatherings you hear interlocking handclaps and chant-like refrains that rise and settle with a warm communal feel. This piece offers a modern instrumental take that features violin as a surrogate for the genre’s lead vocals. The usual call and response is set aside so the core sway remains, carried by a singing melodic line while a quiet frame drum keeps time. The result is intimate and cyclical, with phrases that lean into the beat, float above it, and return to the theme for a calm, hypnotic flow. It gives first-time listeners a clear window into Samri’s rhythmic heart without the crowd energy that typically surrounds it.

[CREATIVE NOTE]
This arrangement adopts the violin as the principal melodic voice throughout, drawing on the Kuwaiti ṣawt tradition to stand in for Samri’s vocal line. Violin is not standard in classic Samri settings. Its use here is an intentional compositional choice that preserves the style’s gentle sway and measured cadence while presenting the melody instrumentally for clarity and learning.
