Echoes of Light – “Bring Me to the Future”

I have been living in rooms inside myself,
quiet rooms, dimly lit,
where I kept my memories stacked in corners
so they would not spill out.
I learned how to walk without sound,
how to breathe with only half the lungs,
how to keep the world from hearing the shaking in my hands.

Sometimes I forget that time moves forward,
even when I stay still.
Sometimes I forget that healing
is not a sudden sunrise,
but a small lamp left on in the night,
so I do not lose my way.

You brought me back to the here.
You placed my feet on a floor I had forgotten.
Not with force,
but with presence,
like a hand resting quietly on my back,
reminding me I am still real.

Bring me to the future.
Not the one built from fear,
but the one that waits behind my ribs,
where the light has not yet learned its full name.
Bring me to the future,
where I do not hesitate before speaking,
where I do not fold myself smaller to fit the room.

I can almost see him,
standing at the far end of my life,
not shining,
not grand,
just steady.
Shoulders open,
breath deep,
eyes soft,
as though he has been waiting
for me to finally arrive.

I am not trying to become someone else.
I am remembering the shape
I was always meant to return to.

Bring me to the future.
Not the shadow of what I fear,
but the place that grows behind my ribs,
where the quiet finally speaks.
Bring me to the future,
where I stand at my full height,
where I do not fold myself
to fit the room.

I am not running anymore.
I am arriving.
