On this week's Cadenza Music Source to Cycle podcast, we head back to one of our favourite musical cities, Detroit, for a session from one of techno’s fore-founders. 

Eddie Fowlkes, the self styled 'Godfather Of Tech Soul', has been at the heart of the techno music scene since it began. Releasing the Goodbye Kiss single on Juan Atkins’s Metroplex back in 1986, Eddie ‘Flashin’ Fowlkes has since gone on to record for some of the most legendary labels, such as Tresor, 430 West, Peacefrog, paper Recordings as well as his own labels City Boy Records and Detroit Wax. 

And Eddie continues to push his sound, this year with tracks coming on Desolat and Detroit Wax, an appearance at this years Movement Festival in Detroit, a summer booking at DC10 and plenty of European dates, Eddie shows no sign of letting up.

Enjoy A driving, hypnotic blend of deep house and industrial textures, built on a steady, forward-pushing groove. Mechanical sound elements pulse in tight repetition, creating a controlled, almost tactile rhythm, while sparse spoken vocal samples drift in and out as atmospheric fragments rather than narrative anchors. The track unfolds progressively, layering new elements with deliberate restraint over extended passages, gradually intensifying without ever breaking its flow. Instead of relying on drops, it sustains momentum through subtle evolution, before dissolving again in a measured, slightly accelerated deconstruction.

Lonefront is the production moniker of Ross Lafayette Hutchens, a hybrid trackmaker, Live PA and modular synth artist whose work is both integral to and anomalous within Minneapolis’s percolating techno underground. His recording catalog reveals a project that remains singularly focused while navigating a slurry of idiomatic shifts and material rigs: the churning Cimilada Qaxootiga (MJMJ, 2017) drew from materials re-composed from a live modular set, while 2019’s Plastic Dreams EP seems to signal toward the place where Gradient Descent dwells.

Gradient Descent marks the crystallization of Lonefront’s trademark carbon-on-silicon method into a sharp and distinct compositional style: equally deft with unruly, extended trips into modular deep-dreaming as he is with sculptural sound-design gestures that dangle listeners in the void of ‘post-rave,’ Hutchens’s defamiliarized mode of techno re-stitches these busted compositional forms into a “program for the reanimation of dead materials.”  The brisk triad of extended pieces on Gradient Descent takes up distinct techno-idioms while maintaining a unitary feel throughout. 

The lead title track bubbles with a pressurized tension, lightly surfing a recombinant grid of narrow arpeggios and gardenpath rhythms before opening up onto a plain filled with gushing channel noise. The pressure never quite boils over before the torched-metal orchestrals of “Fear Collapse” slam into lock-step. A lucid and dramatic centerpiece, the track shows Lonefront’s aptitude to reroute oft-abused generic markers (in this case, the industrial kick) by channeling them into a system that draws out latent affect without demanding it. The rinsed, cackling synth warbles of “Everything is Dripping with Laughter” round out the effort, summoning a base of warm colundi frequencies and Stalker-reminiscent reverberations, riding the bounce of self-inoculating humor coyly toward a receding info-horizon.

@locodiceofc has joined forces with Detroit techno luminary Eddie Fowlkes (@detroitwax) on new EP ‘D-Town Playaz’, out 7th August on Dice’s fledgling @encouleur imprint.

“In my early days I was a huge Eddie Fowlkes fan and I played his Detroit Wax releases a lot,” Loco Dice recalls. “When I finally met him in Detroit years later it was clear that there was a bond between us which lead us to making this EP together.”

Cloutier’s twenty-five-plus-year commitment has been built upon his integrity as a DJ and authority as a selector. A self-described "record digging psychopath," his infatuation remains in the warm, dubby, hypnotic techno and house that has come to characterize his sound. His encyclopedic knowledge combined with his masterful ability on the decks bridge the gap between dance music’s past and its future.

His talents as a producer have also been growing. With the establishment of his own imprint Palinoia, the label has become the new home for Cloutier’s evolving undertakings, with exciting releases outlined this year, as well as giving him a platform to encourage and promote others whose productions have caught his ear and passed his litmus test for quality.
