Pinkshinyultrablast, a five-piece band from Saint-Petersburg in Russia, are set to release their debut album ‘Everything Else Matters’ on 26th January.

Hailing from a city more synonymous with the State Conservatory rather than a gang of shoegaze addicts, they’ve been compared to Lush. But this is no mere throwback tribute - due to their sharp, icy electronics and ability to subvert the genre, bringing something new to the table. They possess  not only the spirit of late 80s/early 90s British bands like Ride, but also machine-made sounds of the same era from Sabres Of Paradise or Global Communication, not to mention wider vibrations like Cluster, Popul Vuh, Terry Riley and Philip Glass.

Disdain for a stagnant scene can often be a driving force of creativity; the band say of St Petersburg that, “we realised the local indie scene was totally boring and wanted to play something radically different”. That vision has been realised – this is an album brimming with playful melody and finely-crafted songwriting. Imagine the scope of a Caribou record, fronted by Elizabeth Fraser soundtracking a grizzly Raskolnikov crime.

The band take their name from an Astrobrite album, an act who were, according to the band, instrumental in how they “researched spaces between ambient, heavy guitar and pop music” .The spaces are what stand out, the production creates a dream-like affair, while space to breathe and reflect on the beauty of the music is accommodated. There is a sparseness to the album that in turn gives spaciousness, even expansiveness.

The second single ‘Holy Forest’ is released 19th January. The song is indicative of an album full of melodic gems and shimmering shoegaze - euphoric with spectral guitars, its sharp edged pop has a radiant charm.  Welcome to your new favourite Russian band.

Melbourne-based shoegazers Flyying Colours return with a second EP of psychedelic pop textures tempered with sugar-rush melodies. The ‘ROYGBIV’ EP is out May 11th on Club AC30 and Shelflife.

Hailing from a country more synonymous with the beachcombers and the sunshine coast than shoegaze luminaries, Flyying Colours have nonetheless been compared to Lush and Ride, weaving smooth, tactile vocals with coarse textures with finely-crafted songwriting. 

True to their name, Flyying Colours unashamedly display their influences on ROYGBIV – tone-bending My Bloody Valentine / Swervedriver guitars, ferocious bass hooks and the familiar soft hush of early 90s dueting vocals. Added to the mix is their own edgy, refreshing pop-mindedness, buoyed by the lush vocal interplay 

On ‘Running Late’ guitars overlap, playing seemingly different melodies and rhythms, as the vocals float up from the ether of the background. Hearkening back to the 80s but also at once sounding thoroughly futuristic, there’s finely-textured guitar loops and lo-fi delay used to get effect throughout the record. ‘Not Today’ and ‘Leaks’ share the same considerable style and skill: successfully channelling not just Kevin Shield’s growling, bending, wall-of-sound guitars, but also Bilinda Butcher’s cooing, unintelligible vocals. The album opener ‘I Don’t Want To Let You Down’ sports a rolling darkwave groove that’s like Joy Division gone psychedelic. 

Formed in 2011, Flyying Colours self-titled EP received a considerable amount of attention, which was then backed up by their explosive live shows, setting them well apart from others occupying Melbourne's fledgling shoegaze scene. A follow-up, ROYGBIV is a snapshot of a band reaching for the heavens and finding themselves reflected in at all over the cosmos: a sign of greater things to come.

Pinkshinyultrablast - Kiddy Pool Dreams

Brighton shoegaze luminaries Air Formation return on … with ‘Were We Ever Here’, their first new material since reforming in 2014. Loosely based around the group of songs they were working on in 2010 before their split, the band worked on the EP in secret, stating “We thought it would be a more exciting, organic, experience if we just got on with it un-announced and released it as fast as we could.”

Air Formation formed in 2000, long before their spiritual forebears Slowdive and Loop were once again considered acceptable influences. Since signing to Club AC30, long a bastion of the modern shoegaze sound, in 2005, the band gained a devoted following and for albums such as 2007’s Daylight Storms (which was mastered by alternative rock legend Kramer) and their final LP, Nothing To Wish For (Nothing to Lose), in 2010. Their incendiary live show also saw them share stages with the likes of Vessels and Efterklang.

Ten years on from their first release for Club AC30, the 57 Octaves Below EP, the four songs on ‘Were We Ever Here’ cover every corner of Air Formation’s sound, whilst adding surprising new touches. The swathes of feedback and distortion are all present and correct, along with swooping New Order synths. Slow-building opener ‘I Could Stay’ comes to life in a swooning burst of fuzzed-up bass and hyperactive Ride-like drums. Closing track ‘The Wasted Days’ takes the entire EP into another gear, shifting from kinetic drone-pop to expansive post-rock territory, bringing this record to a close in a shower of noise.

Say the band themselves: “We really feel 'Were We Ever Here' showcases the best of Air Formation, but then takes it on a different path to any of the music has come before.” While their break-up in 2011 involved no fireworks or fistfights, the band do admit that “what once felt effortless and exciting was becoming hard to hold together, and that is no way to make music.” ‘Were We Ever Here’ suggests that the band’s spark has returned. With a vengeance.

Pinkshinyultrablast, a five-piece band from Saint-Petersburg in Russia, are set to release their second album ‘Grandfeathered’ in February 2016. 

Their debut album, ‘Everything Else Matters’, released at the beginning of 2015 was met with huge critical acclaim. Headline shows across Europe, an energetic and committed fanbase, continued support at radio – all combined to make this upcoming second record one of the most anticipated in 2016. Around the first album the band were quoted as saying “we realised the local indie scene was totally boring and wanted to play something radically different”. The vision of achieving notoriety outside of Russia has been integral to the band’s philosophy – they are very much an international band now. 

A Russian band making a shoegaze record, was seen by some, as something of a novelty. The novelty was quickly eroded, firstly by shoegaze fans who awarded the band an invaluable seal of approval, but also by the music press, who quickly realised that they were not just ‘any’ shoegaze band. This was a band with widespread appeal, an engaging front-woman and a thrilling love show. 

They’ve been compared to Lush among others. But this is no mere throwback tribute. Grandfeathered is a more experimental listen compared with the debut album, it’s the sound of a band unafraid to try new things and embrace those fine lines between visceral noise and restrained subtlety. The band saying of the new sound “The new album has been recorded and mixed much faster than the previous one. The songs have more density to them and are generally more complex.”

Recent single ‘Kiddy Pool Dreams’ features on the album. Described by Stereogum as “A flashback to the glory days of ’90s alt-rock, which builds into thundering instrumental interludes. In between are trickling synths and echoing vocals backed by a rhythmic danceable guitar.”

If that single offers a glimpse of what to expect from the rest of the record, it’s only the smallest of hints – this is an album that consistently demonstrates diversity and eclectic ambition. Influences on this record certainly suggest a new direction for the band, Lyubov claiming “Hardcore, metal and afrobeat” were all instrumental in its formation.

Leading track and first single It’s Tomorrow Now further stirs the melting pot. Opening with a chaotic looped squeal, the knockout punch of the frenzied opening riff and steady, driving drums sets the bar high for the nine tracks that are to follow.

Long Holiday echoes the sun-tinged indie of the ‘90s, layered with ethereal harmonies and languid, hazy guitars, whilst the phenomenal 1987 is punchy and playful; reminiscent of the intelligent garage-indie of Broken Social Scene. Fuzzy psychedelic track Mellow is reverb-drenched, punctuated by distant vocals and dense sonic guitars. The post-rock drone of Roygbiv follows, and Sun Hail and Rain’s continuous percussive drive and grooving bassline allows the perfectly aligned male/female vocals to shimmer. Title track Mindfullness employs a post-punk sway, buzzing with distorted guitars and power chords.

Introducing ‘Velvet Dreams EP’, the debut from psychedelic shoegazer trio Is Bliss, set for release this autumn on Club AC30. 

‘Velvet Dreams’ is a tantalising taster of this new band’s potential. It’s atmosphere resonates strongly with the hazy sixties underground, with its sitar-like waterfall guitars and hypnogogic beats, but other, harder influences bleed through. From the intense hit of fuzzed-up anger on ‘Truth’, through to yearning, soaring dream-pop gorgeousness of ‘Lure’ and lead track ‘Ocean Blue’, this release sets out to show Is Bliss’ full range and depth.

Comprising of Jimmy Stuart (vox, guitar), Dean Edwards (bass) and Sam Speakman (drums), Is Bliss have been together barely a year and yet have quickly gained attention opening for Wolf Alice, Telescopes, Nine Black Alps, Mark Gardener and Robin Guthrie. Many bands today cite My Bloody Valentine as a major influence, but Is Bliss exist because Dean clocked Jimmy’s MBV t-shirt and when they struck up a conversation they discovered a shared a love of Slowdive, Spacemen 3, Verve and The Cure, along with a need to escape the mind-numbing boredom of rural Hampshire. This first clutch of songs was developed through live improvisation, but is taken to the next level here by Pat Collier (The House Of Love, Primal Scream, Swervedriver).

Is Bliss are planning a UK tour in the autumn to promote the EP, followed by the release of their debut long-player in the new year.

Pinkshinyultrablast, Russia’s premiere shoegaze export, have shared their epic and ethereal new single ‘Songs’.

With vocalist Lyubov moving to LA, the band were deeply immersed in exploring new ways of composing and collaborating from a distance long before it was enforced.

They tells us that "this one is kind of an oddball. I think when we recorded ‘Songs’ we weren’t really sure what to do with this 15-minute-long beast, or if we will ever get a chance to release it. For some reason, this B-side feels especially dear to all of us. Possibly because it encapsulates a certain time of us existing together as a band, a very specific moment. We’ve been living in different cities for over four years now, and I think what I miss the most about us all being in the same place is the ability to regularly spend time together in the same room, practice, and run ideas by one another — just communicate and figure stuff out, side by side. I went to a Terry Riley show last December and he was playing with his grandson Gyan. They were sitting on the opposite sides of a really wide stage, pretty far apart from one another, separated by this giant concert grand - playing, pausing, improvising - and just kind of secretly smiling at each other from across the hall. When I think of the time we worked on this song, I think of those kinds of smiles, you know. It feels like hearing back a long conversation you’ve had with a dear friend a while back. Maybe you don’t agree with everything you’ve said back then, but then it doesn’t even really matter, because you know you were just able to truly relate." 

Pinkshinyultrablast have amassed critical praise across the board since the release of their debut album ‘Everything Else Matters’ and follow-ups ‘Grandfeathered’ in 2016 and ‘Miserable Miracles’ in 2018.

On ‘Songs’ they deliver waves upon waves of expansive guitars to form a truly massive fusion of psychedelia and ambience that flows beautifully, awash with blissful synths and their trademark celestial vocals.

INDIGOS, the latest export of Bristol’s vibrant and significant live music scene, are pleased to announce their signing to premiere shoegaze bastions Club AC30 with the release of their heavenly self-titled debut EP.

An effortless blend of 90s post-punk grunginess mixed with layers of psychedelic guitars and irresistible pop hooks makes ‘INDIGOS’ an enchanting prospect, steeped in that ever popular juxtaposition between dark existential angst and blissful summer licks.

The 4-track was produced by Ben Johnson and IDLES guitarist Lee Kiernan with individual parts recorded from different studios, born as much from the bands financial limitations as anything else. Within these constraints they were able to pull together from various sessions and with the help of multiple collaborators, crafted something that sounded unexpectedly polished and extraordinarily expansive.

Opener ‘Silhouette Of You’ enraptures with its dreamy duel harmonies, marching, anthemic beat and blistering chorus while follow-up and lead single ‘I’m Healed’ goes to ever darker depths. ‘Animalistic’ leans into their cool slacker grooves and nonchalant delivery before euphoric closer ‘Out Of Body’ displays their more intimate stylings beautifully paired with a brutal cascade of riffs.
Lyrically the writing is diverse but always viewed through a poetic lens, exploring themes of self-reflection, projection, nostalgia, dystopia and more. They tells us that “our lyrics very often grow out of streams of consciousness as we bounce off each other’s ideas. We usually don’t know what a song is even about until it’s very nearly finished. Rather than trying to force a song into a preconceived ‘box’, we feel that creativity thrives on letting go of attachment to the end result, leaving the song to take on a form of its own, guiding the next steps we take, and essentially writing itself. Each song is as much a mystery to us as it is to anyone else, and that’s the way we like it.”

Recalling the likes of Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins and The Brian  Jonestown Massacre, their songwriting knack and live reputation piqued industry interest early on, with two Dot to Dot Festival  appearances, a support slot with Cherry Glazerr and 6 Music airplay.
