Phil Smart's consistently remarkable sets define the artistic pinnacle of DJ culture. Tweakin' represents the benchmark by which all other club nights should be measured, an archetype of awesome the like of which you will not find in the world today. Someone should probably erect a statue or a plaque or something

Over the three decades that I knew him I was a fan, a friend and eventually partner in A Love From Outer Space. The body of work he left behind runs into many, many hundreds of tracks and covers just about every musical genre known to humanity,  (which of course reflects his relentless creative curiosity and spirit). I decided in the end not to overthink it, and just to roll with a concoction of my favourites, and, as Andrew would have said, tried not to make the joins too obvious..."

Back in September, Friday the 30th to be precise, we were treated to five hours of Mr Smart. As you can imagine, it was a glorious night of limb swinging, sweaty abandon on the 77 floor as one of Australia's best underground DJs led dancers on a journey through tough, techy, groovy, bleepy house music. 

If you haven't yet danced to a Phil Smart set, you not very clever.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first time I played records to people in a club, I was lucky enough to get to play all night long to a sold out crowd in a Sydney warehouse. It was also my first time playing 'in the round', with dancers all around, on a four point sound system!

30 Years Of Dance

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
