On his debut release, the Franco-Cameroonian producer teams up with newly-christened Paris imprint, Deardogs, on four genre-defying tracks which combine popular reference, epic synth melodies and sharp percussion. 

The fire cooked his eyes as they faced them, nude. He no longer experienced the flames with sight alone, but felt the heat overwhelm his body so that he himself became one amongst them. He lost perception of his own relation to space and resigned to a condition of placelessness. Here, he felt most at home and would remain until the world's cold waves swept him back to shore.

Through his DJ sets, membership of Parisian collective Bruits de la Passion and residency on LYL radio, Zulu explores the myriad forms of rap music from across the globe, skilfully interweaving tracks with electronic instrumentals to deftly confuse generic boundaries. With this in mind, some of the more eagle-eared listeners will recognise the referential significance of Zulu's debut release. The title track of 'Smart and Loyal' EP, released as a single last week, is a track which basks in the strange and incongruous, featuring the unmistakable tag of DJ Khaled which continuously leaps to the surface before suffocating beneath razor-sharp breaks and doomy synths.
This is where Zulu thrives: in the intersection between playfulness, pastiche and sincerity, letting you get comfortable before scolding you for laughing.

Our pick 'Mentally I'm Here' - a nominal (and no doubt ironic) reference to internet culture - further embodies this trope, as well as Zulu's mastery of the switch-up. This track is tumultuous, steadily building tension which suddenly dffuses you wonder why you were afraid. Watch out for Zulu, we think he might be on to something...

Exvivo is the latest album from Brussels-based electronic wizard Apulati Bien, following his 2022 LP Azone on Kraak/Promesses.
The eleven songs of Exvivo explore a more ambient and minimalist side of Apulati Bien's universe, full of organic details and charged with a venomous sensuality and melancholy whose hazy sounds sometimes recall the work of Actress, and that, together draw a mysterious territory that one does not know if it is welcoming or dangerous.

CLUB CHAI is a record label, event series and curatorial project founded by 8ULENTINA and Lara Sarkissian (fka FOOZOOL) in Oakland, California. CLUB CHAI centers diasporic artists with the intention of carving out sounds and spaces that consider the ways we build narratives as a reflection of our current and future selves. We believe in the transformative abilities of storytelling through sound and honoring its creation of genres and movements for marginalized people throughout the history of electronic music. CLUB CHAI hosted regular events in Oakland and San Francisco while participating in an international network of artists and collaborators. CLUB CHAI held showcases in New York City and London, and have also presented at Unsound Festival Krakow (2019), Mexico City, Milan, and a UK tour in collaboration with TT label. The label hosted shows and streams on NTS radio, Rinse FM, Lower Grand Radio, and Boiler Room.
