Scotia Birdsey aka Scotia is an Upstate NY-based DJ with an active presence in queer nightlife in the Hudson Valley and Capital Region of New York. She returned to dance music and DJing in 2022 after a decade of dormancy, previously hosting the Capital Region party Outpost1, where she booked producers like MikeQ and Doctor Jeep at the initial blooming of their careers. Those two names are appropriate reference points to describe one of her typical sets - cunty and spacious. She has spent the majority of 2022 starting from the beginning once more, DJing any and all opportunities available to her – playing nearly 100 parties for the year, and along the way becoming a co-resident of the Hudson-based Community Rave Network.

Notes on the Mix ///
"I made this mix reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster of 2022 - this was my first year DJing in clubs in ten years, and also my first year being single and dating as a trans girl. I hope that the selection and timing of the toons here can express some of that to others, but also that the awe-inspiring talent of the producers can shine properly! Of course like any mix I do, I couldn't help but indulge in including a few closing sweet treats of nostalgia, like the queer club producer Bamabounce's 2007 Baltimore incantation of Minnie Riperton's Lovin' You! I also am compelled to say that the first portion of this mix feels a bit inspired by the work of fellow XOXA mix creator Sister Zo, whose production and DJing, amongst others, has really helped me rediscover my love for more expressively percussive dance music. I was so totally taken by the Bass and Funky sounds when I witnessed them bloom in the 2010s, and discovering her work this year was the catalyst I needed to bring me back to those sounds."

JIALING (Big J) is a Taiwanese American DJ/producer, interdisciplinary artist and founder of jjjjjjjj. Currently based in Brooklyn, JIALING was born and raised in Baltimore as a classical cellist. They spent several years living abroad in Asia, Australia and the Middle East before returning to New York.

They are part of collectives AYI AYI (Brooklyn) and WOE (Baltimore) and have monthly residencies on London’s Balamii and San Francisco’s Hyde FM. 

HONEY B is a music producer & DJ who was born and raised right outside NYC. Her travels have shaped her collection, and she loves weaving together different genres to create a unique tapestry of sound. As a resident of NYC based queer collective XOXA, she’s been known to tear up dance floors in the underground & queer scene all over the city at venues such as Le Bain, House of Yes, Nowadays, Elsewhere, Good Room & more.

"I picked J for this mix because we have a similar energy — we both play a lot of genres and play based off a mood or a feeling rather than sticking to one specific world. You can definitely feel that in this mix, we bop through different styles of music, tempos and feels. It’s slightly chaotic but in the best way, just like us 😂. Jasmine Infiniti is on the cusp of exposure, where the esoteric meets the technological. A singularity of multiple intersections, the Goddex transcends genre, obscures time, and knows no limitations. As a DJ and producer the Queen of Hell employs breakbeats and industrial drums blended with a dash of cunt, paying homage to her ballroom roots while staying true to her dark ethereal vibes.

CLUB CHAI is a record label, event series and curatorial project founded by 8ULENTINA and Lara Sarkissian (fka FOOZOOL) in Oakland, California. CLUB CHAI centers diasporic artists with the intention of carving out sounds and spaces that consider the ways we build narratives as a reflection of our current and future selves. We believe in the transformative abilities of storytelling through sound and honoring its creation of genres and movements for marginalized people throughout the history of electronic music. Through our label releases and projects we hope to contribute to this archive and history.
CLUB CHAI hosted regular events in Oakland and San Francisco while participating in an international network of artists and collaborators. CLUB CHAI held showcases in New York City and London, and have also presented at Unsound Festival Krakow (2019), Mexico City, Milan, and a UK tour in collaboration with TT label. The label hosted shows and streams on NTS radio, Rinse FM, Lower Grand Radio, and Boiler Room.
