The aurora. label continues to connect people through music with a new compilation focussed on the underground sounds of Serbia, as compiled by Nino Sebelic. This eight track EP features music from Brutalists, Overtone Funk, Subotika, Nino Sebelic, Ontal, Alavux, Filip Xavi and Wb41.

Through its releases, aurora. explores country- and city-specific techno variations and makes bridges between these different creative enclaves, forming bonds between artists and listeners and giving a voice to the more unknown and unusual scenes out there. So far the label has turned heads with a Europe-wide compilation, then a collection of meditative music entitled Morning Rituals Vol. 1 before a recent France focussed selection. Now it is to Serbia, a country with a rich history of techno.

This latest collection opens up with Brutalists' 'BG Metro', an intense passage of horror themed ambient alive with alien sounds, distorted snatches of human voices and radio interference that sets a stark mood. The Lyre Records founder Overtone Funk - a long time veteran of the Serbian scene- layers up IDM melody and chunky drums, twisted synths and raw textures into broken techno perfection on 'Equipoised'. Subotika is the duo of Mario Crnkovic and Nino Sebelic who are core family members of Detroit label Motech. Their excellent 'Phonic Days' brings plenty of Motor City Soul with its serene and futuristic synth work, smooth drums and classy sense of atmosphere before Nino Sebelic then goes solo on the 'Stunner,' a big, powerful wall of techno with huge hi hats and a hypnotic lead that takes you deep down the rabbit hole.

Next come Ontal, the pair whose music comes on labels such as HANDS, Mord Records and π electronics, and is always focussed on progression. Their 'The Long Run' is a frosty, austere banger with scraping hits and unrelenting kicks. Alavux comes from the Electro/Techno scene of Zemun and he impresses with the intensity and texture of 'Phase 02' which is an all out rave. Belgrade's Filip Xavi's 'Tool For Thought' shows why he is such a mainstay of the scene with its punchy drum programming and dystopian synth work working you into a frenzy while Wb41 delivers a breakbeat track that signs a perfect closing.

This is a widescreen view of the Serbian scene that brings together talents old and new for a fine showcase of the country's rich techno sound.

- T’es qui meuf ? 

Hello ! Moi c’est Sibel, DJ lyonnaise de techno. J’ai toujours baigné dans la musique, j’ai appris le violon et le solfège dès l’enfance et ado, avec mon orchestre, on faisait des concerts un peu partout pendant plusieurs années. Cela fait 5 ans que je m’intéresse à la musique électronique et cela a commencé avec la house, le groove, car tout ce qui est dansant résonne en moi ! Puis je me suis peu à peu tournée vers la techno, au gré des découvertes en soirées, en festivals à l’étranger et surtout dans les soirées queer et safe. Dans mon quotidien, j’écoute beaucoup de jazz, musique turque, musique baroque, bossa nova… mes influences sont multiples.

Mon esthétique musicale oscille entre rythme hypnotique et tempo rapide de la techno mentale, le tout dans une atmosphère minimaliste et sombre. A Lyon je m’investis principalement dans deux collectifs : Unit Sœurs et Métanoïa. 

- Quels sont tes projets en cours ?

J’ai quelques projets de podcasts en cours côté perso. Je m’investis également pour le collectif Métanoïa, à travers l’organisation d’évènements pluridisciplinaires et ce dans un espace safe. Après avoir organisé deux évènements au Boomrang, on démarre notre résidence au Terminal en décembre, c’est l’occasion pour nous de partager notre vision de la fête ! Ce mois-ci j'ai eu l'occasion de mixer au Terminal à deux reprises, pour la soirée Pyrexia avec Fever Recordings, et pour Unit Soeurs.

Quelles sont tes influences locales ? 

Lyonnaise depuis un an et demi, je découvre les artistes locaux depuis peu. Avant de m’installer à Lyon, j’avais découvert BFVR, son travail m’avait influencé, j'aime particulièrement l’atmosphère hypnotique et sombre qui s’en dégage. Côté hard techno et indus, j’admire également le travail de Soraä et CARAVEL.

Hors de Lyon, mes autres influences sont des labels tels que Oni recordings (Istanbul), Influenced Records (Londres), Trau-ma (Portugal), Planet Rhythm (Rotterdam) …, des artistes comme Ben Sims, Setaoc Mass, Danny Wabbit, The Lady Machine, Arkan, Insolate ... pour en citer quelques-uns. Je suis également très influencée par le collectif Spectrum qui organise des soirées LGBTQ+ et j’apprécie particulièrement la programmation musicale, l’organisation générale et l’ambiance safe et respectueuse. 

Comment est-ce que tu aimerais voir évoluer le secteur évènementiel et culturel lyonnais ?

Etant donné que je me suis installée à Lyon depuis peu, je commence seulement à explorer le secteur évènementiel et culturel depuis quelques mois. J’aimerais avant tout que les lieux festifs soient des lieux safe pour tout le monde, il faut sensibiliser tous les acteurs, que ce soit les organisateurs et le public.

J’ai l’impression que de plus en plus de femmes sont bookées pour des évènements, surtout grâce au lancement du collectif Unit Sœurs il y a quelques mois. J’aimerais qu’on continue sur cette bonne dynamique et que l’on donne davantage de chance a des débutant.e.s sur la scène locale !
