Prominently featuring Lyzza's own voice, the Powerplay EP is a tour de force of huge riffs and vocals that leap out of the mix, provided by Lyzza herself, as well as frequent Sega Bodega and coucou chloe collaborator Shygirl.

Beginning with the deliberate march of "Talk Ur Talk", Powerplay unravels slowly over six tracks, a constant build in energy that climaxes with the peak time strut of "LOL, You Wild!" before settling down for the haunting chill and cracking drums of "La Unica". Hardstyle kicks and splashy trance melodies provide texture and drama throughout the whole release, while the aforementioned Shygirl provides a breathy vocal performance that demands repeat listens. And regardless of context, Lyzza has provided a debut that immediately commands full attention, a true stop and turn moment from one of Europe's most talented up-and-comers.

Over the past several years, Amsterdam/London's LYZZA has emerged as a singular voice at the intersection of on-the-cusp club music and incisive songwriting. IMPOSTER is her second release, offering an expansive follow-up to 2017’s Powerplay and a furthering of the vision heard in radio/DJ sets for the likes of NTS Radio and Boiler Room. IMPOSTER is centered on an externalization of LYZZA’s internal struggle, a determined fight to claim a place at the table with the knowledge that the system is not intended for her. The sound is dark and anxiety-ridden, but powerful, riven with forceful rhythms and a variety of seductive vocal techniques.

LYZZA’s performance begins with two breathy, mood setting tracks in “Get What U Got” and “2BORNT2B”, immediately establishing the lilting rhythms and melodic bass lines that run through the EP’s entirety. The energy dial is soon ramped up as “Sleeve” and “Girls R Us” feature LYZZA in full diva mode, sing-rapping over frenzied productions, while “Fraud”, her first official production-only track, finishes off the release with a disarmingly gorgeous hardcore flourish.

The contradictions in “Fraud” exemplify LYZZA’s approach throughout IMPOSTER, balancing brusque dancefloor propulsion against elaborate, emotionally cutting vocal performances. Those contradictions are also thematically born out as LYZZA’s interior narrative is born out in wide screen clarity. The spotlight is on LYZZA this time, but the defiant spirit embodied throughout IMPOSTER is universal.

Moving away from the club, DEFIANCE looks to themes of relationships, heartbreak and resilience with LYZZA echoing ‘you’ll never be the one for me’ on opening track ‘The 1.0’. Flowing into ’Oblique’, LYZZA references to a guarded personality as she experiments with vocal techniques allowing her voice to distant in and out from the hard-hitting percussive soundscape. ‘Hellraiser XXX’ ramps up attitude as LYZZA’s powerful lyrics layer over hyperkinetic beats.

The second half of DEFIANCE lends itself more into the pop world as LYZZA collaborates with Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard and Jungle’s Tom McFarland on the dreamy ‘Neverland’. Allowing songwriting to take centre stage, ’Tangerine Dream’ is one of LYZZA’s most emotive records to date as she approaches it in ballad style. There’s a thoughtful approach to DEFIANCE as the release goes full circle with ‘+00 Burner Call’ referencing back to the shrilling notes found in earlier tracks. The track was produced alongside Year0001 affiliate Woesum who has worked with Yung Lean and Thaiboy Goon.
