The first mixtape released on Best Effort is by Naarm (Melbourne) based DJ/ writer, Sophie McAlister. A Sooky La La at heart, this mix is comprised of Sophie’s most sentimental songs which seem to exude the palpable feeling of Saudade, a Portuguese word that can be described as ‘a pleasure you suffer, an ailment you enjoy.’ The tracks weave through 110 minutes of unrequited love and melancholic sounds that range from MPB, Psych, Folk, Middle Eastern Jazz and Soul, evoking a deep sense of nostalgia and longing.

Crafted with heartbreak from reel to reel, these feelings on tap(e) hope to offer tender respite to the listener’s jaunt down memory lane. With a nod to the past and anticipation for what’s to come, this tape invites you to welcome new spirits from the unwelcomed lull of recent despondency. Sometimes revelling in our most forsaken experiences can spark new life into what used to consume us with grief.

Soy junco, a las criaturas en los bordes protejo.
Soy antesala de la garganta, el descenso.
Un instrumento de cuerdas cantoras voces,
sirenas seductoras misterio del viento.

El lugar donde nace este trabajo es fundamental: el Delta (Buenos Aires - Argentina) y su universo de río. La mayoría de los sonidos con los que realicé la composición son tomados con una scarlett y un mic shure58. Éste territorio y las sensaciones que genera, tanto luminosas, amorosas, como oscuras, tenebrosas, son las que fueron ordenando el viaje. La construcción de este universo fue un diálogo constante con el río.
El título del mismo, JUNCO, tiene que ver con esa cortina natural que funciona como defensa de las orillas, como forma de ocultarse de los peligros, y también trinchera y lugar desde el que acechar. Es el lugar donde se esconden los monstruos, propios y ajenos, conviviendo en danzas dulces y siniestras.

I am a reed, I protect the creatures on the edges.
I am a prelude to the throat, the descent.
An instrument of singing strings and voices,
seductive sirens, mystery of the wind.

The place where this work was born is fundamental: the Delta (Buenos Aires - Argentina) and its universe of river. Most of the sounds with which I created the composition were taken with a Scarlett and a Shure58 microphone. This territory and the sensations it generates, both luminous, loving, as well as dark, ominous, are what ordered the journey. The construction of this universe was a constant dialogue with the river.
The title of the piece, JUNCO (reed), has to do with that natural curtain that functions as a defense of the shores, as a way of hiding from dangers, and also a trench and a place from which to lurk. It is the place where monsters, one's own and others, hide, coexisting in sweet and sinister dances.

As a DJ, a part of the Unabombers and as promoter of the legendary Electric Chair nights, Homoelectric, Electric Elephant Festival and Homobloc, Luke Una was not only contributing massively to Manchester’s 80s and 90s club scene but still carries a deep passion to share his music in clubs around the world. He is the curator of seminal compilations such as the Electric Chair and Electric Soul series as well as his latest É Soul Cultura project and label.

This Session was recorded for "Kasheme Conversations", an interview series from, with and for music lovers. This month with Luke Una.
In our conversation, Una shares what caused his relentless pursuit of music, why he would not call himself a record collector and why he is, as he calls it, so evangelical about music.

The debut of Carl Maxfield, “Aesthetics EP” is an instrumental house heaven. In a time where house music trends sound formulaic and lack feeling, the “Aesthetics EP” is seamlessly aligned with the sensibility that only the 90’s could foster. The Ep makes an interesting blend of live instrumentation and electronic programming that is both timeless and sonically versatile.
 
“The Call” is blissful Balearic deep house at its finest. Its welcoming jazzy keys and airy pads combine in a warm-hearted and unmistakably groovy introduction to open up the EP. It beckons to be played in the midst of a sunset gathering.
“True North” leads us down a deeper path, one that’s bound to make you move. Versatile and punchy, it’s tough bassline and enchanting flutes are vibrant yet subtle.
“Got This” is an underground house banger that is driven by a sophisticated and enveloping afro beat rhythms. The track features a layering of jazzy keys woven with dance floor bliss, free from concern.

“Aesthetics”, is the debut release from Maxfield’s label ‘Chumao records’ and is an absolute must for lovers of Golden Era House music. A truly versatile addition to a DJ’s record bag.
