UNDERTALE by Toby Fox

So...my first upload. And it's a Track 71. Cool.
...well, sort of. The Undying, the fanfiction series that inspired this, takes place in the aftermath of a failed no mercy route where the human was stopped by Undyne the Undying, and she and the other surviving monsters are left to pick up the pieces. It's really great and you should read it, but doesn't follow the structure of Undertale; as such, this isn't really a Track 71 replacement so much as a track inspired by the fic in the style of Track 71. Make sense? Sort of? Good.

Happy Waterfall Wednesday! This will not be a recurring holiday, to be clear. Also, hey. An actual AU of mine gets a track. Nice.

Mirrored Edge is my take on Fellswap or Swapfell...whichever is more correct. I'm honestly not sure which is more accurate, despite knowing the difference. It takes significant inspiration from the traditional Underswap roles--with a few twists, of course, plus the requisite dash of Fell. It tells the story of Chara, a human who stumbles upon a strange house of mirrors while lost in the woods…

In place of Waterfall is a massive abandoned facility: Asterisk Labs, which used to be the hub of scientific advancement in the Underground before all the scientists strangely disappeared one day. (All except one, that is. He was on an extended lunch break at the time.) Rumor has it a rogue AI killed the scientists, subsequently locking down the facility and turning it into a death trap. Those rumors are completely baseless, of course, but what else could explain so many disappearances? (Yes, this area is heavily inspired by the Portal games. Yes, Alphys is GLaDOS. No, I will not be taking criticism on this.)

An unknown, mysterious voice takes the role of Undyne. Upon entering the facility, Chara is greeted by upbeat, pre-recorded messages that guide them through a series of challenges intended to prepare them for... something. Though...if the messages were pre-recorded, why does the voice sound so nervous?

This track replaces both Waterfall and Run! because, in a theoretical game, it would fade from the version in the first half to that in the second when Chara is suddenly thrust into intense testing situations. I uploaded them as one track because I like the transition. This will happen again.

[Mirrored Edge] Asterisk Labs + Testing Your Mettle

Happy holidays, all!

This track was created for the Secret Snowpoff Swag Swap, a holiday gift exchange in a small UTDR server that I don't think has an open invite at the moment. Sad. This track was based on the delightfully broad prompt, "Anything involving the UTDR kids is good for me!" So I decided to make a track about the DR kids in the style of my favorite track about the UT kids. This was a lot of fun to make, and I really like how it turned out.

[Deltarune x Undertale] Deltarune

You know how I uploaded that one self-insert track awhile back? What if I made FIVE MORE? (Possibly six soon.) But don't worry, my ego isn't THAT close to collapsing under its own weight because none of these are actually for me. (Unless I make that sixth one, in which case I probably won't bother to update this description.) Anyway, this AU is inspired by the wacky bedtime stories my dad used to tell my brothers and me. It centers around one of our cats, who's stuck in the middle of some serious Dark World shenanigans but she literally just wants to eat her favorite food why is this happening. Major roles are taken by my direct family members, other cats, and also an evil clone of one of my brothers made out of LEGO. Don't ask.

My middle brother takes the Mettaton role. (To those of you who have expressed concern: I only have the three siblings.) He's quite the character, all right, and with a reputation for being dramatic and jokes about him having his own TV show he was a shoo-in for this spot. (Well, mostly. For awhile he was swapped with the Papyrus, and that's still the case in the Underswap equivalent of this AU. For THAT AU's tracks...uh, check back next year?) Now, I'm not saying I'm one to pick favorites, but out of my brothers...yeah, this guy's my favorite. He cares a LOT about a LOT, which is why he has the reputation for drama, but I wouldn't have it any other way. He's a lot of fun to be around without being annoying, which is more than I can say for a certain few OTHER brothers of m--[I am silenced by the spirit of Christmas love and cheer] [also that was purely in jest I love you guys too] Anyway, Merry Christmas, buddy. Always remember I love you.

The band They Might Be Giants is one specific weird, silly thing that we share, which is why this track uses one of his favorite songs by them as a motif. Being his son is likely part of why I got into Undertale in the first place, so I certainly owe him a lot for that alone. (The wackiness of Undertale certainly reminds me a lot of the shenanigans our cats would end up in in his stories...)His stories are also a major part of what got me into writing. The Undyne role is taken by my oldest brother...who may be taller than me, but I'm still older, ha! He massively tends to win whenever we play...well, not just strategy games. Pretty much everything, really. Settlers of Catan is a notorious example; that's why I included the main theme from Catan Universe, the online edition. (The other motif is "secret" because quite frankly until recently I was under the impression that it was written specifically for him by Dad like a few other motifs in this playlist and now I'm wondering how many other lies I've been told by the council. It's highly unlikely to be identified because of how I've arranged it, but I guess if someone DOES guess it I'll reveal it.) He's been one of my best friends for much of my life (growing up as brothers one and a half years apart will do that sometimes, I guess) so I can authoritatively say his Epic Gamer Swag™️ and the fact that our cats are weirdly fond of him specifically aren't the only great things about him. He's responsible, kind, fun to be around...and he DEFINITELY won't beat me next time we play Smash Bros., because I have a cunning plan to--wait forget that last part. Anyway, Merry Christmas, dude. Strategist

Knight In Cat-Eared Armor

Well, here's that sixth track. As promised, I won't bother updating the descriptions of the other five. Anyway, Chowquest is a self-insert AU inspired by the wacky bedtime stories my dad used to tell my brothers and me. It centers around one of our cats, who's stuck in the middle of some serious Dark World shenanigans but she literally just wants to eat her favorite food why is this happening. Major roles are taken by my direct family members, other cats, and also an evil clone of one of my brothers made out of LEGO. Don't ask.

I take the role of Sans. Is this self-centered of me? Probably. I don't really care because I think it fits and also this entire AU is self-centered in its very concept because it mostly appeals to me. Anyway, yeah, it's me! Red! You all know me! And if you don't, the main things you need to know about me for this AU are that I'm very cool and awesome and also terminally online and obsessed with Undertale. Which are about the same thing, really.

Context for the title, by the way: My Dark World design for this AU is basically just me in a tuxedo with my iconic red coat over it. I figure that captures me well enough. Also, I wasn't originally planning to include an Undertale motif; it was just going to be Steam Gardens, but then I realized that Undertale people hearing that would probably just think of Enemy Approaching...so I just decided to go all in on that motif. I think it turned out really well!

Black Tie, Red Coat

My youngest brother takes the role of Papyrus. This strange "Dark World" is full of wonder for him in particular, and he's found himself perfectly placed to be its new hero! He's ready to take on anything... but one little currently-endangered princess cat might feel like she doesn’t need saving.

Purple Power

Another world, so much resembling this one, yet so different.
A world where fiction bleeds into reality more often than not.
Where wonder and whimsy of every variety lurk just below the surface, conveniently out of view of any meddling adults, only ever noticed through the eyes of a child... or of a cat, of course.

Two such eyes are now tightly closed. The sounds of the birthday party downstairs must be startling the poor little cat, who sleeps fitfully, almost as if her dreams portend some coming calamity...though her sisters (of a sort) likely contribute to her troubled slumber as they frolic about the room to which the three retreated as an escape from the noisy guests.

Downstairs, humans young and old all partake in their own kinds of frolicking. Board games, card games, video games (of course); delicious food from the potluck; and the talking, ah, the talking the talking the tALKING--erhem. Sorry. Suffice to say, the family party is going splendidly, though a certain opening-writing coat-wearer may or may not have slipped off for a catnap of his own by this point. (No, I'm not the canon narrator. Just going to break the fourth wall for a sec to make that clear.)

Though...all is not as it should be in this house of laughter. A child stands alone in a quiet, empty room, isolated from the surrounding joy. He quite resembles the birthday boy we just saw gaming in the other room, though this one seems like more of a...square. By which I mean, blockier. Ba-dum tss.

The doppelganger raises his hand and plunges something into the floor, ripping a hole in the fabric of reality. Darkness deep as midnight pours through from the other side. (Huh, guess that "below the surface" analogy was a lot more literal than I realized.)

The darkness expands, rapidly filling the entire house. All those within--or those awake to feel it--are struck by a strange sense of sleepiness as the black mist clouds their eyes and minds. The house descends into night and the decorated rooms fade, expanding and reconstructing to become something new. Something...fantastical.

The time has come for our story to begin.

Corthon takes the role of Sans. She was an instrumental part in bringing this world into existence...but she hasn't been able to Create as much of late, to the point that she considers herself semi-retired. Ellie's appearance might shake things up, though...

Fearless

* Seems video games really do cause violence.

What is it with classic Undertale roleshifts and pairs? Underswap, Storyshift, and so on... Trioshift (along with any similar AUs I decide to make) tries to do something new with the idea of those formulas by adding five to the classic "Storyshift ten" and splitting them into groups of three:
Gaster, Sans, and Papyrus
Asgore, Gerson, and Toriel
Undyne, Alphys, and Mettaton
Napstablook, Maddy, and Muffet
Chara, Asriel, and Frisk

Alphys takes the role of Napstablook. She spends most of her time working on her engineering projects in her workshop...by which I mean all of her time. She probably sleeps there. Early on, Miu (the protagonist) encounters her far from her usual locale--in the form of a remotely controlled robot assassin controlled from the comfort of her lab! Apparently while watching someone through a screen can make you root for them, it can also make it much easier to beat the living daylights out of them.

[Trioshift] Virtual Hostilities

The Frisk role is taken by our old cat, Lucy. (Rest in peace, little princess.) She was the closest Dad's stories had to a protagonist, I'd say...mostly because how he characterized her resulted in her taking over the story more often than not. Consequently, she seemed about right for the protagonist of this AU. She's prideful, gluttonous, hates to lose, impulsive, prideful, loves to annoy yet easily annoyed...did I mention prideful? Honestly, she tended to be the direct cause of most of her own problems in the stories, and this story is no exception. Though...maybe she'll learn something along the way, for once?

Yes, this is a "Gamers don't die we respawn" take. Truthfully, I'm not sure why I started making this (apart from being bored on vacation and having recently purchased FL Studio Mobile), but once I started I kind of couldn't stop. This is the longest battle theme I've made yet, and I'm very pleased with how it's turned out. 

Would this track and the dialogue I wrote work tonally for the Weird Route? Probably not, though I did try to sort of split the difference. The real question is: Are they fun to contemplate? (Yes. The answer is yes.)

Clash Of The Fallen Bluebirds

Hello, everyone, this is my formal announcement that you should all play Dr. Mechano! It's an indie RPG where you play as a charismatic, gadget-building thief on his quest to become the richest villain alive. The free Chapter 1 demo just released about a month ago on itch.io, and I loved practically everything about it--and a lot of the things that I didn't are currently being reworked, as the dev has been great about listening to player feedback.

Happy Thanksgiving, turkey be upon--oh it's Friday already. Happy Black Friday, capitalism be upon you? Anyway, I made this. I played Outer Wilds, loved it, loved the OST, and made this based on my favorite track because I have one way of interacting with media. Also, if you're wondering why Gustav Holst is here, it's because this is mixed with an idea I had awhile back for a version of Outertale where each main character gets a motif from one movement of The Planets. Asgore gets Jupiter, and his motif pops up a little towards the end of Undertale (the track), so...here we are. Penumbra Phantasm is here because I thought the vibes fit, and Star because...uh...guess. Anyway, happy...occasion.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, all! Even if you don't celebrate anything today and/or don't have the day off, I hope you have a good day regardless. Last Christmas, I gave you my h--*ahem* I put up some cool IRL self-insert tracks; that's not abandoned, but this year I've decided to commemorate the occasion with presents to honor cool Internet people instead! I've got a good few of these coming, though not as many as I initially planned...I'm no DashingToadie, after all.

These presents include my very first covers, like this! This almost wasn't my first, actually, and technically isn't in order of when I made them...but let's save that for tomorrow. I felt like this track would be a good choice to celebrate Christmas Day, and I hope everyone reading this feels loved today--even if it's not Christmas when you're reading it. I've always loved this track from Genericophony, both for the title and for the use of motifs and for the impeccable vibes all around...I decided to go for a bit of an alternate take, though. I think it turned out well!

For my next number...*checks notes* oh. Oh no.

This was originally going to be my first released cover ever, and it WAS made first...but then I decided I wanted to start this event on Christmas rather than ending it there, and this no longer felt like the strong opener it did before. So now it ends up like this. This is probably okay.

Anyway, this track was made by the incomparable Myttin., who has been someone I've greatly admired ever since he left that one-word comment on the third track I ever released. It might be a little parasocial at this point, to be honest, but I think of him as a friend. I hope he's doing okay in the void or wherever he is now. (I heard he aced the audition for a minor role in the new Aftergore 404? So he's got that going for him.)

I've honestly been thinking about covering this track for a long time. It's just such an emotional track and scene that doesn't really compare to anything in...any other AU's murder route. In fact, the original version of this thumbnail (albeit one without the backdrop in such disrepair) was made nearly a year and a half ago. I emailed it to Myttin and he emailed back that it was cool, which was another highlight of our long and storied history. You know, I probably could've stood to email him before giving him that small role in Argenomess. (Myttin, if you're reading this, you're Jerry there. I figured it fit, and you would probably be okay with the role because you found him interesting enough to keep in your AU.)

Context for the thumbnail, by the way: My interpretation of the Surface replacing Snowdin in Smorgasbord explains it as an artificial recreation, complete with taped-up background elements and a giant lightbulb sun. It's a lot more convincing when the people who maintain the illusion aren't busy fleeing in terror from a murderous protagonist.

Oh yeah, and I thought the repeated arpeggio sounded like part of Oh! One True Love, which I thought was appropriate. So I changed it a bit at a later part, and now it's intentional.

Little late, but here's the third installment in my Christmas special series! This one was made for @its_puffle, who is cool and fun to be around and RP with. A few years ago she made a couple tracks for a crossover AU with the indie horror game Ib, with Mary from that game taking the Papyrus role. Since then, a remake has been released with a reworked version of "Puppet," Mary's theme. Her motif has changed, so I thought a fun thing to do would be to rework these tracks using the new melody! Also, yes these count as one track even though I uploaded them separately for later convenience. Shush.

Painting You Red [A Mary (Ib) Bonetrousle] (CHRISTMAS SPECIAL 3.5/6)

I made this one for @user-359325599, a friend I met in a Homestuck RP server that she's since left and that I don't really participate in much anymore. Given that we don't have that in common anymore, I'm pleasantly surprised by how much we just...interact anyway. This is partly because I got into the habit of sending her a lot of my creations, and partly because...our conversations are just, fun. 

Anyway yeah she's cool so I made this theme for Ehryka Makhez, a character that she played in the aforementioned RP server. I think I got the vibes about right. She's a tired revolutionary who wears special disguising glasses to hide the fact that she has powerful psionics...because the government tends to use people like that as batteries. (Troll planet is kind of messed up, man.) She met my character while he was working at the librar--sorry, BOOKHIVE, and they immediately ended up 

This is probably the track in this event that I messed with the most before settling on a final product; originally it had a fairly different vibe to start with, and the lead instrument was acoustic guitar (because she wants to stay "unplugged," get it? it's genius). I decided I didn't like how it sounded and went with this flute thing instead. I knew from the start I wanted it to go from sounding lowkey and tired to being sort of revolution-battle-adventurous with the same/similar motifs, though. (I just kind of didn't get that right initially.)

Behind The Glass (CHRISTMAS SPECIAL 4/6)

This one's for you, @user-255285003! While not one of my closest friends, I have it on good authority that L is a pretty swell, stand-up guy. I'd say more, but he doesn't like compliments. I will say I enjoy being around him, though, and of all the people in the group chat I wanted to make a bunch of tracks for as part of this event (I did not end up with that many) his was the easiest idea for me to come up with, so! Here it is!

Argenomon is a self-insert Pokemon AU about the members and culture of @slick_silver's Argenoverse Discord server. Slick just popped up and dumped a bunch of information on us about it one day, which prompted me to change my nickname there to "Professor Redwood" for the next several months. (Guess what role I take in the AU. Go on. Guess.)

Here's what Slick had to say about L's role:
"L: The winged motivational speaker and youth coach who resides in Teesos Town, a treetop village. Specializes in the Fairy type. Though he has many strong Pokemon at his disposal from years of training, he volunteered to be placed earlier in the League so that he could spend his time training and motivating weaker trainers."

In my interpretation, when the champion was establishing the Pokemon League in the region where Argenomon Silver/Gold/Metal takes place, Teesos Town was simply too small to have any vacant buildings that would work. Refusing to trouble the townsfolk to build something new--or worse, give up some existing establishment--L got to work building a ropes course in the trees high above. Most of the resources used were for nets and other safety features like patrolling flying Pokemon, but in the end L ended up making a more "L-ish" gym than anyone could have built conventionally. Onward and upward!

What better way to finish a Christmas special than with a track about Santa being dead?

Furtherfell has always been cool to me. It stands apart from just being "Aftergore + Underfell" because of the unique nature of Underfell's neutral endings, and also because of how it handles Underfell--it's heavily inspired by Underfella's take, but adds so much to it that they added their own version of Underfell as one of their "branches." I felt like I had to cover something of theirs for this holiday special, especially since my good pal Penny owns it and local coolperson Spud composed so much of it.

Originally, I was going to cover "Taking Back CONTROL" since that's one of my favorites on Furtherfell's OST...but as I started on it, I realized that it would be difficult to put my own spin on that track without ending up with something I like less. Then I remembered this exists, which was the perfect choice in so many ways. I love how this track interweaves its motifs, and I did feel like making something snowy would fit...plus, I mean, Santa's right there in the title! (Even if he's dead...though Furtherfell giving Asgore slightly more nuance without making him any less of a tyrant is another thing I love about the AU.)

...okay, so maybe I lied a little bit. The track about Santa being dead ISN'T the last one. Hey, I had enough of a sense of timing not to put the Divorce cover on Christmas Day, didn't I? Technically I had a half dozen tracks when I started the event, but...then I made another. Funny how that works out.

Oh, yeah, my voice. I do like singing, so I guess it was kind of inevitable that I'd eventually do something with lyrics, especially with Don't Forget being such a big thing in Deltarune. Voice reveal! Whoaaaaa! ...uh, hope you like my singing? I also wrote these lyrics, and definitely didn't stay up way too late one night recording takes for this. Nuh uh.

This track...isn't really for anyone in particular, but I have seen people lamenting the lack of Berdly love in this fandom--particularly @saurdino420 and @damian-thorne-act-i. I agree that he deserves better, though I think part of the issue is that his character arc kind of LOOKS like it's over when it really isn't yet. He's young! Give him time, people! We haven't even seen what he does with "Ms. Boom" yet! ...yeah, I count myself among the group who wants Berdly to be seen as more than just a walking joke.

...what's that? You want to know...who's singing this track, canonically? Ha, uh, funny thing about that--we don't know who sings Don't Forget in Deltarune, and there's not even any canon for this, so...literally whoever you like! (That's my way of getting out of having to commit to Kris, Susie, Noelle, or someone else entirely. So there.)

After deciding to indulge the oddball detective by bringing him clues from the villain's devilishly hidden lair (which was literally next door), Dr. Mechano quickly discovers that Syntam isn't quite what he seems--the grayscale gumshoe holds shocking sway over the element of electricity...and that of surprise!
