You simply aren’t ready for Next Life. So rare is it that you discover a band with such an original sound, coming from somewhere within their own universe that when you do find a band such as this, it’s always surprising. We proudly introduce you to Next Life.

Hailing from Oslo, Norway Next Life are Hai Nguyen Dinh and Tormod Christensen. They make music that fetishistic ally explores the twin worlds of Deathmetal and game music with a preciousness that some how skirts into the art-rock realm. Around the office, we call their sound “Gameboy Deathmetal” and when you hear a second of the record, you’ll know why.

Basically it’s real guitar, synth guitar, Nintendo “vocals” and programmed beats made to fit a metal archetype. This refined and personal new music somehow always winks at the artifice through which it was created (which is why it is also completely unnerdy).

Lastly, a side note here about Next Life. These guys fucking ROCK live. You wouldn’t believe it could work, but live they are like vicious robots spasmodically jerking to every power chord and chugging riff. They are available for booking, and really, they are probably one of the very best new bands around.

This track was written on a Nintendo Gameboy and originally began as boss music for the game Jump Jet Rex (on Steam now and coming to consoles soon).  I expanded a bit on the original track and added guitar.  This song is heavily influenced by Gustav Holst's "Mars, The Bringer of War".

Those who are aware of dgoHn will by now be familiar with his sound and those who aren’t should be. Back with his third single on Love Love, the drum maestro makes skin prickle once again with two shining original tracks laced with impeccable moments. Only dgoHn can create the kind of drum and bass that sounds like the tightest of ensembles playing meticulously rehearsed arrangements, painting intricate shapes with the percussion. 
 
The title track takes a fresh look at the amen break, finding ways to breathe new life into it. Soaring above the clouds on thick warm pads the drums thunder with a blissful rage, propelled forwards by a rumbling bassline. On the B-side ‘Dooky’ serves up a dgoHn masterclass in spatial control that could well be a future-classic of his. A formidable groove with serious punch, hi-hats skip along as the delicate balance of frequencies gives the listener just enough headspace not to get lost in the deep, dark world it creates. A subtle demonstration of tension and release, this single floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee whilst dripping with funk.
 
Lastly, Rognvald switches up the title track with a jam that triples the edits and doubles the bass, tipping the scales from the side of restraint to that of chaos without losing the feel of the original. Artwork once again provided by Colin ‘Snublic’ McCallister.

Part two of the remix series starts with Dave Hoax taking on the Jungle influenced Without Purpose originally by Earl Grey. The signature pads set the background as Dave turns up the distortion on the drum breaks. The sub is low and rattling and the variations and edits on the rhythm are frequent.

Ruby My Dear - Altaïr [LOVWAX10 CLIPS]

I think most artists have some personal goals they set for themselves when creating their art. Some might strive for some technical achievement that underlay the artistic ones which might be more personally important for them. Others just want to see how far they could push something. This track, Fauvist Respoke, is perhaps my greatest achievement in sample manipulation. I had wanted this to be a 20 minute prog-opus, a la "Fragile", and while it's about half that length, you get a whole ton of ideas packed in there.

My only real regret in my carer so far is that this - my "best" track - only was available as the B-side to the Vinyl version of the "Lady Fantasy EP". And that pressing wasn't so awesome.  But hopefully by posting it here, as well as by spreading it on other sites (CRD, etc) I can give it a bit of new life....
