Pimps, pushers, and superfly black protagonists, the Blaxploitation era of cinema depicted black communities and life within them in a badass and highly dramatic fashion. Accompanied by lush soundtracks orchestrated by the likes of Curtis Mayfield and Isaac Hayes, the combination made for an unapologetic and powerful expression of blackness on the big screen.

Hustler Soul : Behind the Lens of Blaxploitation

Get down to a collection of sounds from the African funk movement of the 70s! Influenced heavily by the rhythms of both James Brown and Fela Kuti, the epicenter of this groove explosion was found in Ghana, but spread throughout different parts of Africa like Nigeria, Cameroon and Benin. Bands like the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou and The Funkees took incoming sounds of soul, jazz, and funk from the West, and put their own African spin on them, producing the afro-funk genre.
