My Great-Grandfather came to this country from Bari, Italy in 1916 in search of a better life. He worked in shoe factories in Brockton, MA and eventually owned his own, 'Merro Leather.' He taught himself English and prided himself on knowing every state and its capital. My grandfather Roger didn't know English until grade school.
