This week, I departed from my traditional Traxsource shipping spree and I actually perused some promotional material sent to the Electrik Cakery Inbox - and MAN I found some really interesting gems. ELECTRIK CAKE WITH COCO STREET 0171 - SOME FRESH SLICES!! (PART 1) 12/16/2024
My goodness, it can be so challenging to create a mixshow - especially when your technology isn't cooperating.  So for the past few weeks, I've been trying to figure out why my sample rate switches from 48000 to 441000.  I consulted, and reset, and changed my buffers - still, I got mad audio dropout.  I had to mix all of this week's ingredients THREE TIMES because of it.  Finally, some quick editing skills were utilized to make the bitter batter better - and VOILA, today's session.  Unfortunately, due to the extremely late hour, I wasn't able to do my intro giving thanksgiving and praise to my LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST!  So I'll just leave that right here.

Electrik Cake With Coco Street 0171 - Some Fresh Slices - 12162024

A few months ago I got the bright idea to feature Mr. Jeff Mills in an Electrik Cake with Coco Street Artist Spotlight.  I picked the tracks and listened deeply, thinking to myself what a cool show this would be. Thing is, I didn't know just how difficult it would be (for me) to mix this cake!!  A cake in which the complexity and quality of ingredients are unlike anything I'd curated before.  I chickened out and chose familiarity and ease instead.

Happy 2025!  Well, I called myself doing something special, like, unearthing my favorite tunes from the 80s and 90s that to me are the progenitors of house music - the songs that gave me understanding about "how house was built."  As my story goes, the first time I heard house music and techno I fell in LOVE, because I understood its elements.  I could hear pieces of music I'd grown to love so it made sense to me.  I wanted this show to sort of push the reset button like a fresh start to redefine my own inspiration.  I'm deciding what I'll do next creatively.  I need fresh things, you know?

AUDIO!AUDIO!AUDIO!✨✨Electrik Cake with Coco Street #0175 with The Valiant Queen 01132025 - TECHNO:  From Chaos to Calm.  Friends, this mix was made as my response to what's going on in my beloved LA County right now.  Techno tends to calm me.  Not give me peace - there is a Prince who has taken care of that already.  No - Techno brings me a sense of calm in the midst of chaos.  This mix is is a musical time capsule, if you will, reflecting the frenetic urgent heartbeat here in Los Angeles County.  Displaced individuals.  Completely destroyed homes.  Frightened woodland creatures.  Burnt up Oscars (yes - the celebrities who lived in the Palisades lost everything too) and the erasure of the evidence of lives lived.  What's most heartbreaking is the political turmoil this has turned into.  I feel like some of us have stopped feeling compassion, which is an essence of being human.  People are so angry at everything and everyone.  Of course...  who wouldn't be angry right now?  Los Angeles the City has forever changed; and not just the topography, but the community, the culture, its very FABRIC has been ripped apart.  Seething beneath the Angel's Wings bubbled a tarpit of displeasure, dislodged and now available for all to smell.  If you've ever been to the La Brea Tar Pits, you know what I mean. What will we be after this?  What's gonna happen? What will happen to love?  There is a glimmer of hope though.  I see some good communities banding together to offer love and HOPE, but others want to criticize and blame and discredit - on "both sides of the aisle" as they say.  I've one final thing to say.  In the end, nothing matters except who you Know, who you Loved, and who you Served... but most importantly, WHO KNEW YOU.  One day you'll find yourself knocking and knocking and knocking at a door that will never ever open.  But you hold the keys to entering that very narrow open door in your mouth and in your heart - and whether you will truly take your life From Chaos To Calm.

My dear, sweet Electrik Cakesters:  I took a little break for my mental health.  That's right.  I needed a BREAK, y'all.  The past few weeks have been so crazy that I felt I needed to step away for a while.  Friends, let no one deter you from practicing quality self care.  I have been around a while, and I've heard a lot of thigs about the importance of self care, especially when it comes to your mental health.  For some reason, the music industry can bring the absolute worst out of people.  If you're not careful to take care of yourself, you will end up burnt out, crashed out and wondering what happened to your outlook on life.  At any rate, take care of your emotions.  You're the only you, you got!  Find out for yourself what makes you happy and do it.  Also, I learned that it's beyond past due for me to really play what I likes - and I hope you likes it too. 	Rock With You is my favorite song by Michael Jackson, and this version of "Rock With You" is brilliant to me. It is stripped down so you can hear all the tasty elements that cradle his voice.  When I listen to music, I try to isolate the bassline and I love the groovy freedom of it in this song It is altogether chord establisher, percussion instrument and bridge maker - and it is marvelous!  Next, I isolate the drums.  That iconic opening riff catapults me right into the groove every time! But the most awesome part of the song are those delicious meticulous sixteenth notes on the hats and that groovy percolator! It's Chef's Kiss!! Mwah!

	Listen deeply to this mix with me.  Ugh. This mix is excellent.  Check out the lush, lush orchestration that lovingly frames Nick's voice - and our wonderful Valerie gorgeously 	killing that piano!!  But that's not the essence I want to focus on.  It's the way they play off of each other.  If you've ever seen them perform together you know about their 	radiating synergy.  It's completely evident in this track.  Man I wish I could have been in the studio when they were cutting this.  I know the whole joint was full of energy.  	Hats off to Dimitri from Paris for respectfully reimagining this classic.

Times are very crazy right now.  The world is at a crossroads... old friends are becoming estranged and there is uncertainty everywhere.  But wait - isn't there always uncertainty?  What is so insidious about now?  Because LOVE is growing cold.  The world is literally crumbling, so I made a crumbly cake.  One that should be consumed with our fraying social structures in mind and with strategies about how to survive.  OR, you could just light some gorgeous smelling incense, fire up your colored LED lights, dim the lights, grab a beverage of your choice, and dance the crazy away.  Make room for me.  I'll join you. 

This mix is movement. It’s culture. It’s sonic anthropology. You just stepped into a world where music is felt, lived, and understood.

This week is NOT about nostalgia. It’s about lineage, how sound transcends and provokes memory, and how Garage House & Techno emerged from different corners of the underground, yet somehow feel like distant relatives (3rd cousins?) at the same family reunion. One soulful. One driven. Both transcendent.

This week’s Scrumptious Electrik Cake is a reflection on the dance floor as archive, as wellness space, as a kind of sonic heirloom. Think of it like this: the same way Monet painted his cathedral series in soft, impressionistic repetition, utilizing “his ability to capture the essence of a scene quickly then finish it later using a sketch combined with his memory of the scene,” Roy Lichtenstein later reinterpreted them in graphic, industrial, punctilious lines as one who was said to be “never shy about appropriating a theme.” Some called Lichtenstein’s effort mockery. Others called it homage. But either way, something - an essence (Dasein?) was carried over—even if the brushstrokes changed.
