Q: Thanks for your contribution to our mix series, how did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the eventual result?

A: It started with the idea to make some kind of anti- war downbeat mix. Although it was clear from the start that I also wanted to include some new digs, the mix should centre around two classics: Timmy Thomas’ “Why Can’t We Live Together” and “Clouds Across The Moon” by the RAH Band. Anyway: By the time everything was done and dusted, I had replaced Thomas’ original with a cover version and all that was left of “Clouds Across The Moon” was a little vocal snippet. But I think I somehow managed to preserve the intended spirit: To tell it like it is. To let the story not be smothered in utopian beauty but to give room for a feeling of imminence, or subliminal distress and even a bit of good old German Angst … by considering Dub, Downtempo, Balearic, Cosmic Disco and more or less related genres not as feel-good sounds but as a danceable form of “Widerständige Musik”. 

Q: Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story?

A: Not exactly a story, but G. Rizo’s „Je Me Mentis“ is an alltime fave of mine. It’s a still pretty much underappreciated (wrongfully, of course) piece of abstract disco dub from Switzerland. A real heavyweight … practically at almost any speed.

Q: How do you dig for new music, and/or what kind of things arouse your interest in music?

A: I’m intrigued by music that is outlandish, naive, heartfelt, original, unfamiliar, genuine, odd, wild, touching, surprising, spooky, in any way trailblazing and/or trying to reach out to the stars - no matter from which era or part of the world. Ideally there’s a Saz, Oud, Sitar or Twang Guitar as well as a prominent Bass and some analogue Synths involved. Even better if it’s drenched in echo or reverb. I like to rummage through flea markets, second-hand shops, record fairs and cassette booths. Especially when I’m on holiday. As far as African, South American and Asian music is concerned I find a lot of stuff via local friends and Instagram contacts. And of course, what other diggers are spinning at parties, uploading to their YTs, or recommending in our chats is a huge inspiration.

Q: One record you will never let go, and one that doesn’t want to leave your wantlist?

A: Never let go: Beyond Sound - “Diamond Harbour”. Holy grail: Os Tincoãs - “s/t”. A record I managed to finally cross off my wantlist this week: Z.I.Z. - “…Aber Sie Machen Es Göttlich”

This is a French (my mother tongue) EPx17 song for those who’d rather be awake than reassured—the ones who’d rather KNOW & GROW than BLOW & SHOW blindly, even if “Some Truths Are Harder to Swallow” 🍌💦  i.e. my BJ (banana joke:) sister-song of “L’Embobinage”… 

The lyrics are rooted in one of Carl Sagan’s most haunting and relevant psychological insights:
