Radio Slave pays homage to Funboy Three with ‘The Lunatics (A Tribute to Terry Hall)’. 

Fun Boy Three’s groundbreaking 1981 anthem ‘The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum’ reflected a socio-political uncertainty and fear of the time, mirroring today’s calamitous society.

Radio Slave’s tribute to the late vocalist of The Specials and Fun Boy Three, Terry Hall, ‘The Lunatics (A Tribute To Terry Hall)’ centres itself on the unmistakable haunting vocal chant of its source material. Welded to the sort of unbreakable groove that Radio Slave has spent two decades refining, the vocal swells, repeating chorus, and jolting alarm sounds make for yet another anthem from one of dance music’s most bankable names.

Rounding out the release, Radio Slave strips the single of its iconic vocal for the ‘A Clinic Full Of Cynics’ dub. In this version, he lets its infectious guitar strum bass roar and added jazz-inflected musical elements shine in a pure and true tribute to ska music told by the Rekids founder.

ASA 808 & DAEDE, Eklekta, Jakob Mäder, Jon Selbo, and OSO are on board the delicious volume II of the compilation series “DJ TOYS” of the super cool German queer & feminist collective, party series, and label TOYS Berlin. Featuring UK Bass/Garage, Trance, and House flavours, the VA fails big time to disappoint and manages to deliver a savoury five-course meal filled not only with peak-time juicy fares but also laid-back zesty refreshments. 

Hailing from Stuttgart, Jakob Mäder is the mastermind behind the track we were solicited to review/premiere. With well-received cuts issued on vital imprints such as Midnight Operators, theBasement Discos, Bedrock, Frank Music, Mélopée, Nothing Is Real, Mister T. Records, and his very own Constant Change, just to name a few, he has become one of the most prolific and solicited artists of his generation amid the House Music scene. 

Described as “rave friendly” in the official PR text due to the ingenious simplicity of its elaboration, “1991” is served with the perfect amount of 90s dressing – not too much, not too little so that you can scarf it down without getting stuffed. For the recipe, chef Mäder focused on “what the dance floor nowadays needs” and seasoned its delicacy with a fatty bassline and saucy synth chords. Einfach lecker!

In March this year COD3 QR delivered a digital threesome from DJ Deep, Avision and Deetron.  Now, twice as much is coming in June for the label's first vinyl-only release, with each artist bringing a second track to the platter.  As usual the tracks have been selected by Laurent Garnier for the label whose ethos is: Music diversity is our strength!

Fortunate to grow up around the rich club culture of NYC and influenced by the sounds around him, Avision started young on the turntables at the age of 12, gained his first residency at 15, and hasn't looked back since.  Around that time, he also began to hone his production skills and developed a distinctly New York-flavoured techno and house sound which is evident on "Hold No Groove" and "Talk Is Cheap".  It's the recognisable sound he's previously brought to the likes of Cocoon, Ellum, Drumcode and Hardgroove.  

Having been involved with making and playing music for over 20 years, Deetron is an artist who is assured in his ambitions and a skilled performer, maintaining a high level of quality in every aspect of his career: from mind-boggling three-deck DJ sets to his special touch on remixes or his diverse range of productions.  In 2014 he launched his own imprint, Character.  But has also graced the likes of Axis, Music Man, Subject Detroit, Running Back, Rekids and more.  Here he brings the original techno sound of "Pulse", alongside the deeper "Corazon".

DJ Deep got the party started on the digital version with "What's Going On".  It's now accompanied by the hypnotic "Transition".  So, it's no surprise to hear he started playing at clubs and raves in Paris in the late '80s / early '90s, including Laurent's renowned Wake Up at Rex.  The respected and versatile DJ, producer, label-boss and party curator is just at home helming the decks at major venues as well as mixing radio shows for Gilles Peterson's Worldwide FM.  As a producer his critically acclaimed appearances on Rekids, Kaoz Theory and Tresor, not to mention his own Deeply Rooted, have demonstrated his imaginative approach to house and techno.

B1) DJ Deep - What's Going On  - Preview

COD3 QR delivers a double whammy for the next digital release with tracks by Tal Fussman and Costello taking the helm of [QR]D.158.DWM.24, as Laurent Garnier selects two Detroit orientated string bangers that go straight to the point at delivering the perfect positive tunes for your summer.

Tal Fussman creates music that works in many settings and transcends genres.  His openness to a wide range of sound is what has both made him a widely loved favourite, but also someone who operates in his own parallel musical world.  In late 2022 he announced the launch of his imprint, Survival Tactics, with the first release being his debut album released in 2023.  Tal grew up in a small town next to Tel Aviv, today he resides in Berlin and ready to take on whatever adventure awaits him.

Costello is a versatile French electronic music producer, artist and DJ known for his cutting-edge sound and technical prowess.  With a rich discography that traverses techno, disco and beyond, Costello has carved out a niche as a genre-defying act. His standout tracks have not only captured the attention of underground stalwarts like Boys Noize and Laurent Garnier but have also made waves among mainstream giants such as David Guetta and Tiësto.  Behind the decks, Costello's sets are a masterclass in energy and groove, showcasing his diverse musical heritage and relentless pursuit of innovation.
