Behold is the first single from the album “The Unseen”. The album is a collection of faith centred songs some of which are specifically for a congregational church setting. 

“Behold” draws directly from book 21 of Revelation in presenting the beautiful hope of God’s place being with man in the new heaven and earth. This has always been a deeply moving chapter for me. 

I remember completely breaking up as I read these beautiful words in a group devotional I was leading. Someone came up afterwards to ask if I had stuff going on and I laughed and said “No mate, those words are just so beautiful and encouraging”. 

For me Behold is about the only true “happily ever after” at the end of the story and I’m excited to be releasing it as the first song from this album.

“The Unseen” album has been strongly influenced by the work of Dr Michael S Heiser, particularly his book “The Unseen Realm”. Major ideas in this work include human worth as those made in the image of God, a loving Father’s mission over millennia to be reunited with his human family and the depth and fullness of Christ’s finished work. 

When I write music for a church setting or music in general, the themes and ideas have to be authentic to me personally. I have to feel honest singing them. In a church setting, the challenge is to convey those deep lyric concepts in a musically accessible way. But when people talk to me about these songs I am always reminded that the beautiful thing about lyrics is that everyone has their own unique revelation when they hear and sing it.

Above All Things is the third single from the album The Unseen, a collection of faith-centred songs by Gold Coast songwriter and music producer Luke Garfield.

Garfield is a seasoned songwriter and music producer having spent time in Nashville honing his skills recording other artists. He is continually writing and recording new material at Banana Llama Studios, located on the Gold Coast, Australia.

Above All Things was a song that Garfield wanted to write after listening to a podcast interview. The person being interviewed was talking about a phrase from Colossians in the Bible speaking of Jesus:

“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”

Garfield says:

“The phrase ‘created through him and for him’ really hit home like never before. All that was created good and pure was through Jesus and for him. 

That might offend some people who think Jesus is sounding like a Greek or Roman type god who is greedy and wants everything for himself, but to me those words are wonderfully rich and deep when you understand who Jesus is. 

When you read that in context of Jesus coming to seek and save the lost. When you read it knowing that Jesus says if I set you free, you are free indeed. Then you start to understand that this wayward world was never meant to look the way it does and God had a plan to make it right in Jesus. Most of all, Jesus cares about us because we were made through him and for him - we are dear to him.” 

From that kernel of an idea Garfield started to take the rest of the first chapter of Colossians and formed the lyrics for the song Above All Things. One of the earlier songs written for The Unseen album, Above All Things has found a regular home as a live worship song in his local church for the last 4 years.

One other unique aspect of this release is the synesthetic artwork for the song. It was painted by friend and fellow musician Fear of Flight (Aaron Shipway) who has an amazing gift of seeing the music he hears. Garfield is filming a mini-documentary to explore synesthesia and the music of The Unseen album to be released later in 2022.

As a composer, Garfield writes music for a wide range of genres including alternative rock, indie electronic and songs for a church setting.

This song is on my album, "Howl". It's about being introverted, keeping to yourself, and opting out and saying "no" when you don't want to get involved. It's about trying to stay sane in a crazy, noisy world. Lead vocals by Ben Alexander; Sound Engineering by Luke Garfield.
