We are delighted to host Xeum for our second installment!

French DJ, Producer, Remixer and Performer from Asian and Slavic roots, Xeum discovered electronic music and synthesis sound as a child and quickly started to compose and perform his music. With a versatile music background education, he graduated from Paris & Versailles Conservatory of Music and became a studio- recording artist for EMI and classical percussionist in the French Air Force Brass Band, which plays for French President. With various orchestras, he has performed in prestigious venues like Chatelet Theater, Palais des Congres, Mogador Theater in Paris, Budapest Opera, Kremlin in Moscow. 

Xeumʼs international collaborations are as eclectic as diverse. Versatiliy might be closest way of describing his sonic sensitivity as he regularly performs and produces a range of music from Classic, Jazz, through House, Tech House-Electro to Electronica for various events. As Dj and musician, Xeum tours with a live act, mixing and performing electronic and acoustic instruments or 100% Originals DJ set. He has performed in many clubs and concert venues around the world.

Rumours have it that he escaped from a confetti factory in some faraway place, and that he was on the road with a flea circus afterwards. That would explain why all those sepia-coloured scenes from exotic places appear before the inner eye of his listeners: With the steady, hypnotic rattle of a steam train in the background, they show sequences from Middle East, South America, India, and from the infinite realms of Inner Space. It's this organic amalgamation of traditional, hand-played music and the digital functionality of House beats that makes Timboletti a very special DJ and producer.

Codex Naturae Guest Mix 004: Lola Villa

This week prepare to abandon the safety of a house beat and dive into the reality constructed by Romanian duo Karpov Not Kasparov, a reality built on the rules of chess! Today, the duo is joined for this special session by Ion Dumitrescu and Camil Dumitrescu of Future Nuggets, an imprint on the prowl for obscure musical hybrids in the dark corners of Romania.

Karpov Not Kasparov’s debut LP, "Soundtrack for a Game of Chess", (2015) has been nominated 'album of the month' by Vice Magazine, has been aired on New York radios and pressed on vinyl by the boutique label @Polychromesounds.

The duo began making music based on the rules and strategies of chess. It might seem complicated but the output is always a very danceable melody, sometimes inspired by Oriental folklore (because chess is an Oriental game) and always mixed with powerful 80's dancefloor sounds.

Local heros in their native Bucharest but also quite active musical tourists, Karpov not Kasparov have been carrying their instruments throughout Europe during the past four years, playing their very energetic live set in alternative venues from Berlin, Milano, Vienna, Florence, Hamburg,  Basel, Torino, Brussels, Dusseldorf, Prague, Lille, Budapest etc.

Born in the valleys home of Brunello di Montalcino in Italy, M@kossa has voyaged the world seeking sound. From Jazz to Soul, from House to R&B, from African Beats to Electronic music and Funky Disco. Enchanted by Nicholas Jaar’s spell in his teenage years, M@kossa studies as a sound engineer and starts producing. His productions are as stripped down as they are intoxicating, inducing the listener in a quasi meditative state. A cornucopia of tropical and oriental sound, his music whispers an ancestral message of a slow life.

He has released tracks on Talvera Records, Cosmic Awakenings and Orient Art, with a new track coming out soon on Berlin imprint Drossel.

Mr. Codex Naturae 009 | Andre Campos Romero, AKA @Nochi, is a musician and producer from the gorgeous Costa Rica. Nochi performs live (solo or in a duet) combining acoustic instruments with his Dj sets. His musical spectrum composed of a cornucopia of sounds ranges from Minimal to Ska, Footwork to Dub Reggae, to Deep and Tech house, a taste of Cumbia, a spice of Afro and a final touch of Latin Rhythms. This colorful pallet pervades in all his musical selection which hits your eardrums from all angles.

He is also co-founder of Deep Underground Beats, an Artist Agency based in San Jose, Costa Rica and Founded 11 years ago by four companions with a combined 15-year experience in music, broadcasting, and design. In It’s lifetime, Deep Underground Beats has been pushing electronic sounds through various clubs and parties around the country, spreading good energy and even better music.

Badre has been on the road for more than 15 years in the music scene at home and abroad.

He always transports in his suitcase a collection of fine records, which, despite or because of their diversity, make his gigs a harmonious sound experience.

Codex Naturae Guest Mix 012: Badre

Originally from Istanbul, our guest this month, grew up with a love for music, especially music performance. At age 6, she joined the school choir and started singing. Since then, she performed on countless occasions in Turkey, the US, Brazil, Costa Rica and Paraguay. Tuğçe studied voice, jazz vocals, and West-African drumming with percussionist Milford Graves and singer &amp; songwriter Sheila Jordan among others.

Various listeners have remarked that her voice is “ethereal”, “something ancient, calling from the primeval darkness of fairytale.” Tugçe’s musical interests cross genres and continents. She has collaborated as a singer, songwriter, and co-producer with Paraguayan musician & producer Santi on three albums: Cíclico (2014), Songs for Another Day (2015), and El Regreso del Gallito (2016). She has also released four
singles: Istanbul’a (2017), Donde Va (2016), Sevda Çiçeği (2016) and Backflash (2015).

As the founder and curator of the Kybele Project, she develops opportunities for greater collaboration and broader inclusion of artists from around the world.

Our Guest Bx94, provides us with a stunning CDX014 guestmix! Bx94 is a hiphop inspired culturally infused beats alter-ego of an elusive artist from New York. 
Of Turkish descent, our guest gains inspiration from  Zeki Muren and Erkin Koray as well as masters like Fela Kuti and Mulatu Astatke.

Bx94 also occasionally produces as Germanic, his minimal house project, where he exlpores eerie and mystical soundscapes. In his own words, this music is supposed to "capture the listener in an emotional state of pure stimulation."

As the founder of Baklava Tapes he explores a plethora of beatmakers with oriental, turkish, and jazz influences. The label was established in 2016 to cater a specific type of space. A chill cafe or rooftop setting. The music is mostly free and 100% of the digital album sales are given to the artist. 

CDX014 to honour the mix, we created a visual mix, entirely made with the lo-fi video equivalent of tapes, GIFs. A short movie of sorts 🎥. Check for excerpts on our Facebook page and Stay tuned for the full movie.

For podcast 018 we are graced with a magical journey in jazz by PVNX

We leave you with some words by the creator which we suggest you read before listening:

"I always feel undeniable passion for Jazz. I think it is in my blood, my father was the one who showed me that part of the music universe when I was a kid. I do remember that music was playing at our house always, mostly it was jazz, it fascinated me by the sophistication, complexity of the music ideas, transitions and developments. One of my favorite tracks of all times is a 9 minute 11 seconds masterpiece by Charles Mingus named Goodbye Pork Pie Hat recorded live by the very interesting blend of musicians, they called themselves Manhattan Project (Wayne Shorter, Michel Petrucciani, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, Gil Goldstein and Pete Levin). The second one is a genius rework of California Dreaming by George Benson, simply fantastic fusion adventure for 7 minutes 22 seconds. I want to thank my father for showing me and giving opportunity to dream and fly on the wings of both of that tracks, as well as musician general which changed my life forever... good music, good life...

Composing started long before the actual mix came together, when I started djing back in 2007, it was a dream for me to play jazz only mixes. Since then I was collecting jazz records, scrutinizing discographies of favorite jazz musicians, finding new names and putting all my gems on the shelf for the better moment to come. 9 years later moving to New York, falling in love with radio WBGO, digging through enormous amount of records on every day basis, meeting with the founder of Codex Naturae and his patience helped the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. Composing this mix was one of the biggest challenges for me as a dj/vinyl collector. But as in a beautiful novel everything happened for reason and every musical composition in this mix appeared and played its role in my life as well. The thought process changed 4 times while I was working on the mix. Exploring jazz music gave me a chance to fall in love with early prog rock. Finally the concept defined itself - it is an ode to the Freedom, Love and Hope of the different future, future which were expected and pursued in the heads of young Chick Corea, Bob James, Marc Moulin, John Abercrombie, Dedalus, Joze Privsek, Lloyd McNeill, Oregon, Gabor Szabo... composed by their geniuses, which world would recognize later, these burning hearts were speaking so emotionally so truthful... so real... 

Instruction: 
Spend 1 hour of your life with yourself, at least try to avoid your social media frustration and bugging. Listen to the whole mix carefully, music is the key."

Codex Naturae Guest Mix 019: Fattish

Created in the isolation of the British countryside, Desert Sound Colony is inspired by faintly remembered sounds and almost forgotten memories. The thread running through the melodic, visceral tracks touch on a sense of melancholy present within us all. 

Occupying a space somewhere between ‘60s Psychedelia and the pulsating sounds of future-clubs, Desert Sound Colony is both infectious and ethereal, shrouding the listener in a gentle, rhythmical canopy. 

The project’s debut EP, 'The Way I Began', is released October 13th on New York’s Scissor & Thread, the first release on the label from an artist not based in NYC. Desert Sound Colony’s second EP release debuted on the label in early 2015.

1. How did you first get into music?
My parents always had music on 24/7 growing up so I was definitely surrounded by it. I can vividly remembering getting into my own music though. I was in Long Island, NY with my grandma when I was 12 years old. She bought me a Sony Discman at a local mall and said I could pick a CD to go with it. I chose Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory because I liked the front cover. I had no idea what it sounded like at all. I went back to the car to check it out whilst she shopped and I was completely hooked. I listened to that CD probably over a thousand times ha! From Nu Metal it progressed to much harder and darker sounds, mainly black and death metal. I spent most of my teenage years at gigs of that sort, drinking beer and getting crazy in mosh pits. Good times!

My biggest source of inspiration is the Klub Kegelbahn in Lucerne, where I am resident DJ. Under the name "KOSMO" I have been organizing a monthly event. Eddie C, Carrot Green, Khidja, Suutsche, Thomash & Urubu Marinka, Noema, Zozo and many others have already been guests.

For CDX 023 we are honored to host @Quixosis, aka Daniel Lofredo Rota, hailing all the way from Quito, Ecuador!

Daniel quite literally fell into music before he was born, with his mother making him listen to techno pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre when she was pregnant. He started studying violin when he was 7. “I had such a classical music education that I came to a point that I rejected music; but I recovered this taste with electro and noise, as ‘traditional’ electro music is somehow very connected with classical music.”

Possibly because of his Italian background, Daniel focused especially on what he considers the first creators of electronic music in the world: the futurists. “They wanted to create the music of the future, cutting off their roots with the past, an aesthetic that engendered fascism. And I realized when I was using the synthesizers that I was also giving up my roots, I ended up drifting without identity.”

But later, under the name of Quixosis, Daniel eventually connected again with his roots, using “in a subversive way” the same machines invented to get rid of the past in order to preserve Ecuador’s traditional inheritage.

Below a brief Q&A with the man himself.
1.	How did you first get into music?
I stumbled into it by mistake to be honest, I had always set out to be an illustrator, so I was doing illustrations for a friend of mine who was a musician – and he taught me production in exchange for the illustrations. The final nail in the coffin was that during my university attachment, I worked at a record label and I fell in love with it from there.

2.	How do you usually approach mixes? Do you record your mixes live with CDJ/Traktor is it an Ableton or Logic session? 
I like to create mini stories in my mixes, so for example, I set a mood, and this is the story of a person traversing underground, he is following the voice of a siren, the deeper he goes, the deeper the music gets and more tribal it becomes as he reaches the underworld realm where his ancestors reside in. I do record my mixes live, with my controller through Traktor.

3.	Which people/artists have inspired your career? Any non-musical influences?

From his ground control in his new studio complex in Munich, musical-promiscuous Bartellow alias Beni Brachtel carries a lot of different projects into the world, all aiming for the same credo: style over stylistics. Most of his productions balance the voltage ratio between hypnotic, percussion driven groove and the obsessive workout on deep harmony and abstract soundscapes, which can be found under his own alias, as Tambien (w/ Marvin&Valentino from Pubic Possession) his own work, or his collabs with Osaka's prodigy dj and producer Ground. BALAM is a musician, producer and DJ from Buenos Aires, Argentina, after a long time working with his indie dance band that allowed him to play in many countries and festivals around the world, he gets all into his new solo project as producer and DJ “Balam” focusing on techno, disco, shamanic beats all produced and recorded in his studio combining real analog synthesizers, like modular synths, moogs with guitars, real and weird percussion sounds creating a unique atmosphere making every track a voyage through the latin american jungle.

At the moment he has two releases, “Chaman EP” released through french label ESTHETIQUE RECORDS (FR) in March 2018, available both digital and cassette, and an “Senderos de Selva” out on April 24 through PLAYGROUND RECORDS (BCN/ARG), plus remixes and a track for the Take Away series for the prestigious label Calypso Records from Iñigo Vontier and Thomas Jackson, a track coming soon for the new Spanish label United Colors of Rhythm, plus remixes for labels like Innisfallen (MX), Control (MX), Nein (UK), Emerald & Doreen (Gr).
In June 2018 he made his first USA mini tour with 2 gigs, one in the prestigious Brooklyn, New York radio “The Lot Radio” and the other one in the well known SAMO Records Night at Jupiter Disco, Brooklyn, New York.

Now he is planning his first Mexican tour with confirmed dates in CDMX, Toluca and Puebla plus more to be confirmed.

His work had been supported by artist like Thomas Von Party, Tronik Youth, Golden Bug, Perel, JP Soul, Curses, Rodion, Freudenthal, Thomass Jackson, Veneno, Clandestino, Local Suicide, Theus Mago, Roman and Castro, Marcos in Dub, James Rod, Colossio, K-effect, Man2.0, Connor, Gabriel Ferreira, Timothy Clerkin, Shit Happens, Owls at Down, Vverses, Facets, Dany Nijensohn, Shubostar, Iñigo Vontier, among others.

1. Where are you from and where do you live?
I’m from Los Angeles originally but am currently located in Quito, Ecuador. I spent the last two years living in Buenos Aires, Argentina and this year I’ve been constantly moving around. I was in Colombia for five months and now I’ve been Ecuador for one!

2. how did you first get into music?
Music was a part of my upbringing, my parents basically gave me a stereo system as soon as I was old enough to be able to mentally process what it was (3?) and some CDs that they wanted to listen to themselves (The English Beat, Beatles, Jackson 5, etc). I had a radio show in college and I’ve always worked in the music industry and with events, so becoming an electronic music DJ felt like a natural progression of events.

3. How do you usually approach mixes? Do you record your mixes live with CDJ/Traktor is it an Ableton or Logic session?
I like to play with energy levels and transitions between songs, my sets can be pretty eclectic with tracks of very different origins so finding a way to make everything sound smooth can be like a puzzle sometimes, but that’s what makes it fun! I record with Traktor using an Native Instruments X2 as a controller

4.Which people/artists have inspired your career? Any non-musical influences?
I work for ZZK Records so artists like Nicola Cruz, Chancha Via Circuito, and Uji were how I first got into electronic music. From there I’ve branched out a lot but usually still go for sounds that have some sort of organic influence, samples, a live recorded drum solo, etc
