It's about how our conscience can make us believe that situations are worse than what they really are. It's not particularly what someone says about us or what happens to us that is the problem. Our conscience is what decides how we perceive things and it can make us think that what someone says about us is true. If we can better control our conscience we may better handle what someone might say about us.
