Bill is an IT manager at Parts Unlimited. It’s Tuesday morning and on his drive into the office, Bill gets a call from the CEO.

The company’s new IT initiative, code named Phoenix Project, is critical to the future of Parts Unlimited, but the project is massively over budget and very late. The CEO wants Bill to report directly to him and fix the mess in ninety days or else Bill’s entire department will be outsourced.

With the help of a prospective board member and his mysterious philosophy of The Three Ways, Bill starts to see that IT work has more in common with manufacturing plant work than he ever imagined. With the clock ticking, Bill must organize work flow, streamline interdepartmental communications, and effectively serve the other business functions at Parts Unlimited.

It's time to get back to basics.  It's easy as a software developer to be working on the latest and greatest frameworks, using the best methodologies, trying out new things.  Sometimes it's a good idea to get a refresher on the very basic fundamentals.  In this episode we go over the access modifiers that are common in C# and Java as well as ways to emulate these types of behaviors in Javascript.  And let's be honest - encapsulation is only effective if you're providing programmers that come after you with a roadmap of how things should work.  For that reason we also discuss Command Query Separation and some other ideas and practices that are a part of good programming practices.

23. Back to Basics - Encapsulation

The world of computer programming is vast in scope. There are literally thousands of topics to cover and no one person could ever reach them all. One of the goals of the Coding Blocks podcast is to introduce a number of these topics to the audience so they can learn during their commute or while cutting the grass. We will cover topics such as best programming practices, design patterns, coding for performance, object oriented coding, database design and implementation, tips, tricks and a whole lot of other things. You'll be exposed to broad areas of information as well as deep dives into the guts of a programming language. While C# and Microsoft.NET are our preferred development platform, most topics discussed are relevant in any number of Object Oriented programming languages such as Java, Ruby, PHP, etc.. We are all web and database programmers so we discuss Javascript, HTML, SQL and a full spectrum of technologies and are open to any suggestions anyone might have for a topic.
