I, like many of her fans, was ecstatic when Mandy Moore returned to music releasing the first single off her album “Silver Landings”. 

When I first heard “When I Wasn’t Watching” the song stayed with me and continues to stay with me. The melody lived within my cells and the lyrics, which I can oh-so related to lived in my head. Simplistic, yet complex, I knew this song was special from the first moment I heard it and I know it’s still special because every time I hear it, it feels like the first time. 

I’m not one for karaoke or covers, but I just simply had to cover it- not only because it’s one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite artists and not only for fun, but I wanted to honor Mandy and the writers and thank them for such a beautiful composition.

I’ve been working slowly, but surely on new original material. In fact, this song was a catalyst for one of the new songs I’ve been working on. For now, consider this a treat to hold you over.

What Are We?

As I am continuing to do press for my debut album, I was given an incredible opportunity to cover a Christmas song for an upcoming event. Anyone who knows me well knows that I despise karaoke. For me, it is essential to sing songs that were written by me. I have to have a depth of personal connection to the lyrics & story. In some rare instances I have such a personal connection to a song that I almost need to sing it (like I did with Mandy Moore’s “When I Wasn’t Watching.”)

As I racked my brain for which Christmas song to choose, only one choice came to me— “Hard Candy Christmas” by Dolly Parton. Not the most conventional Christmas song choice, but undeniably MY Christmas song choice.

As someone who use to have warm feelings around the holidays, it has become a bittersweet time of year for me. My father’s birthday was December 24th & he passed on December 26th, so that will forever remained stamped in my personal history as an association with the holiday season. Also, as someone who has done everything on his own (and I say this humbly, but proud), has carved out an independent life, and has an unconventional career choice, I feel the words and melody of this song deep within me.

This song is dedicated to everyone out there who, like myself, has a bittersweet taste for the holidays. Whether you lost a loved one, continue to spend another year companionless, or simply have a difficult association with this time of year, you’re not alone. You don’t owe anyone an explanation for not feeling jolly or merry around Christmas time.

I think this song represents that perfectly and I dedicate it to you out there. It was an honor to put my spin on “Hard Candy Christmas”.
