Social Media Symphony is a collection of notification sounds from popular social media applications layered on top of a MIDI rendition of the 1979 song “Rainbow Connection” by Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher.  The song, originally featured in the “Muppet Movie” and performed by muppet, Kermit the Frog, highlights the theme of a “connectivity” that can never be reached, as the lyrics continually revert back to the chorus “someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection”. This phrase describes a destination that is never achievable mirroring the false promise of social media platforms to truly bring us closer together before sacrificing our privacy. Further the lyrics of the song evoke a false promise of connectivity that the public has been led to believe, but that can never be realized: “So we've been told and some chose to believe it, but I know they're wrong wait and see.” Ultimately, the addictive nature of social media notification sounds have created a world where we are constantly waiting for the next message to arrive but are continually unimpressed by the resulting output. The following app and service  notification sounds are used in the composition: Discord, Duo, Hiu, inlinx, imo, Instagram, Just Talk, Kik, Kakaotalk,Skype, SnapChat,  Line Messenger, liVu, Tango, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, Maaii Freecall, Nymgo, Mewe, Mi Chat, Monkey, Nandbox Messenger, Nymgo, Nimbuzz, Nono Live, QQ, Reddit, Sestyc, SiMontok, TamTam, Tinder, Viber, Tumblr, Twitch, Upco, Vigo, Vent, Vine, Vkontakte, Wechat, Weibo, Youz, Zendesk, and Xnxx.

Howard North was a math-rock, noise band from Montreal, Canada that existed from 1993 to 1995. The band played numerous shows in Montreal and one show in Ottawa before calling it quits in 1995. The most notable shows were opening slots for Unsane, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Come, Polvo, Bliss.

The Yes Men were a band from Brooklyn, New York that existed from 1997-2001. We were formed in 1997, 2 years before “The Yes Men” political artists group started (They formed in 1999). We played noisy melodic rock with analog instruments. We played a total of 4 shows in four years at New York University, Arlenes Grocery and 2 shows at The Continental, NYC.

Jonah Brucker-Cohen, Ph.D., is an award winning researcher, artist, and writer. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Lehman College / CUNY in the Bronx, a Designer in Residence at the New York Hall of Science, and a dedicated Mentor at New INC (New Museum). He received his Ph.D. in the Disruptive Design Team of the Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department of Trinity College Dublin. His work focuses on the theme of “Deconstructing Networks” and includes over 100 creative projects that critically challenge and subvert accepted perceptions of network interaction and experience. His artwork has been exhibited and showcased at venues such as SFMOMA, Canadian Museum of Contemporary Art, MOMA, ICA London, Whitney Museum of American Art, Palais du Tokyo, Tate Modern, Ars Electronica, Transmediale, and more. Two of his artworks, “Bumplist” and “America’s Got No Talent” are included in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art. His writing has appeared in publications such as WIRED, Make, Gizmodo, Neural and more. His Scrapyard Challenge workshops have been held in over 15 countries in Europe, South America, North America, Asia, and Australia since 2003.
