Hot-n-fresh out the kitchen for week two of Pizza Club 2k14 are semi-supergroup Abattoir Blues. Hailing from Brighton, the band stem from a freshly established community of local artists and music-makers that seem to chuck keys into a bowl and share members as though swing parties were going out of fashion; Abattoir Blues in particular borrowing full time members of Bayy and Birdskulls.

‘Still Here’, their first offering to surface since last spring, introduces itself like the hybrid 90’s lust child of ‘Drinkin’ In LA’ and ‘The Sweater Song’; spoken-word atop soothing-riff quickly halt before, like the most beautiful of wolves, Harry Sinclair Waugh howls and lunges his way through sludgy dueling guitars.

Last year, King TV's 'When She's Around' was featured on the very first Beech Coma release. Intimacy and hedonism high-five each other throughout the song as guitars switch from almost silent to screeching in waves - it's an utterly brilliant and thrilling song. When I first emailed frontman Louis Milburn about working with the band, I distinctly remember him asking me never to mention his age - just 17 at the time - as he was worried venues would stop booking the band.

Having just turned 18, and Louis is astoundingly prolific. Two further King TV releases under his belt, he also started writing solo work under the name Lou E late last year and released the beautiful and uplifting 'Teach Yourself'. Behind the scenes, given the number of different demos he has sent me since, I would guess there are in excess of 25 finished brilliant Lou E songs waiting to be unveiled - and today I have the utter pleasure of sharing my favourite, ‘Just One Thing’.

Taken from Vol. 3, out March 9th, ‘Just One Thing’ is a sprawling affair that really belongs over a sun-drenched road-trip scene in a cult 80s film. Juxtaposing everything that ‘When She’s Around’ is about, warm acoustic guitars slowly rise up like a heat wave from hot tarmac, whilst Louis’ vocals take you away with him as the dream-like, hazy melody slowly becomes lodged in your brain.

Ravi Gunslinger - Slug Man (Slug FM Edition)

As you all know Ravi loves to push boundaries. It's kinda his thing. 

A year ago, whilst searching for some answers to questions, Soft Gunge Records offered Ravi the opportunity to spend the year as a slug. In return for spending a year as a slug Ravi would be given a lifetime of perfect health. As part of the deal Ravi also agreed to record an EP about slug year (rather than the previously agreed Malcolm in the Middle album - Ravi is a *huge* malcolm-head, or malc-head as is the usual convention in malc-head online communities such as r/malc-head).

For many, spending a year as a slug would be at minimum undesirable. The slug life is no easy feat. You don't have limbs, nor any effective methods of communication. It's a lonely existence. Especially if you have to live it with the memories of being able to walk with legs and eat with hands.

But not for Ravi. This is his art. I mean, what's more punk than metamorphosis? A John Lydon endorsed pale ale at a Brew Dog pub? Maybe. But apart from that, there isn't anything else more punk than turning into a slug and then back into human again in exchange for a lifetime of perfect human health. In any case John Lydon isn't really punk any more. A bit like a neatly stroked cover drive isn't really cricket anymore. Or how using a Jamie Oliver cookbook for inspiration isn't considered to be "proper" cooking. 

This record documents Ravi's year as a slug.

Side A is the originally planned Slug Man EP and on side B, the infamous Slug FM broadcast (presented by Morgan Slugman) featuring a re-working of The Many Days of Slug Year, a Parquet Courts cover as well as some special appearances from friends of Ravi G.

Combining stark post-punk instrumentation, lush melodies, and abstract yet vivid songwriting, Cold Beat is the project of singer/songwriter/bassist Hannah Lew. From the beginning, Cold Beat dove into big-picture topics: On 2014's Over Me, she explored the death of her father and loss in general on compact, driving songs that harked back to the heyday of Tubeway Army, Blondie, and the Sound (whose song "Cold Beat" gave Lew's project its name). The changing face of her hometown San Francisco in the wake of tech companies' success informed 2015's Into the Air, which added jangly indie pop, Motorik, and minimal synth experiments to Lew's repertoire. The electronic elements of Cold Beat's music only grew as the years passed, with 2020's Mother reflecting the influence of Eurythmics -- as well as Lew's own motherhood -- on its polished, expansive meditations.
Lew began writing Cold Beat songs in the late 2000s while playing with the acclaimed San Francisco trio Grass Widow and establishing herself as a filmmaker and visual artist. When the band went on hiatus after releasing 2012's Internal Logic, Lew focused on Cold Beat in earnest. She took Neon Piss guitarist Kyle King, Shannon & the Clams guitarist/synth player Cody Blanchard,

and former Grass Widow drummer Lillian Maring into the studio to record November 2013's Worms/Year 5772, a set of songs touching on the death of her father and her own insomnia. The first release on Lew's Crime on the Moon label, it also featured a remixes by POW! and Total Control's Mikey Young, with whom Lew forged a long-running creative partnership. Lew continued her meditations on grief with Cold Beat's first full-length, July 2014's Over Me. Recorded by Trans Am's Phil Manley and mixed and mastered by Young, it found Lew backed by King and Erase Errata drummer Bianca Sparta.
Cold Beat's lineup and sound continued to evolve quickly. Just over a year after the release of Over Me, the band returned with September 2015's Into the Air, which featured drummer Susi Leni and guitarist Jackson Blumgart alongside Lew and King. Partly influenced by San Francisco's rapid gentrification thanks to the tech boom, the album boasted a more electronic-based sound that informed the Cold Beat albums that followed. Lew wrote and recorded most of 2017's more intimate Chaos by Invitation on her own, later bringing in Manley, Young, King, and Blumgart for additional tracking. In August 2018, Cold Beat returned with A Simple Reflection, an EP of Eurythmics covers that expanded the group's lineup to include King, guitarist Sean Monaghan and keyboardist Luciano Talpini Aita. The EP's lush, synth-driven sound laid the musical groundwork for the band's fourth album. Mother, which was inspired by Lew's pregnancy as well as the tumultuous state of the world, was released by DFA in February 2020.
