Program Notes:
Listen for the subtle,  short, interrupted sine waves within electronics that cause the speakers themselves to emit ‘pops’ and
crackles, interrupting the acoustic instruments and tape playback. We’re not hearing the sine wave but rather the effect of the sine wave on the speaker’s mechanics turning the speaker itself into an acoustic element; thus giving these objects an active role rather than accepting them as a passive (playback) tool. Usually this treatment is avoided and seen as a mistake but in this piece it functions to address the physical mechanics of the speaker, of its own body, and demanding it to become more. To add to this, the percussionists are playing custom made “speaker-instruments:” subwoofer speaker cones transformed into an open air (and in a sense, large contact) microphone. This configuration allows the percussionist to physically perform low resonant tones and high washes of live filtered noise not possible outside this setup, with the hope to merge electronic and acoustic instruments into one composite organism, dependent on this merging to become more than just an extension of itself. The live processing portion of the work is that of rapid panning of the live acoustic instruments between two stereo speakers. This panning reaches audio rates and thus from this rapid oscillation causes its own square wave-like tone: the electronics sounds blooming from the acoustic in a symbiotic, intertwined creature like lichen.
This piece engulfs two prior pieces of mine that I’ve been working on for the past few years, “Harbinger” and “Speaker Spit.”

Descripción:
“Era una fría mañana de Junio, me encuentro en el parque del centenario, un parque urbano en el plano de Arica, realizando grabaciones de campo para el proyecto “Mapa Sonoro de Arica y Parinacota”, en ese horario se pueden escuchar diversas especies, como Chincoles (Zonotrichia capensis), Picaflores del Norte (rhodopis vesper), Águilas (Generanoaetus melanolecus),  Cernícalos (Falco tinnunculus), Paloma común (Columba livia), Tórtolas Quiguagua (columbina cruziana), entre otras especies. por suerte la costanera que bordea el parque tenía muy poco movimiento y todavía no llegaban las familias, ya que era un domingo de día. Así  que arme el equipo y puse a grabar al micrófono zoom H3vr que realiza grabaciones ambisonic (esfera 360°) y en ese lapso de tiempo de grabación , volaban alrededor entre el follaje de los árboles una colonia de tórtolas.
En la grabación se pueden escuchar tres tipos de vocalizaciones, llamados generales, llamado de atención y vocalización de enfrentamiento entre machos. La vocalización de las tórtolas es muy interesante ya que las personas que no conocen la especie creen que es una “pequeña rana croando”. Mientras grabo el audio solo me queda sentarme, respirar hondo y disfrutar del ambiente."

Gato del Desierto (gdsf.cl) (Arica, Chile), Manuel M. Figueroa (Gato del Desierto), nacido en la ciudad de Arica, desde muy pequeño gracias a su madre, comienza por el amor a las Artes, las tradiciones y la conservación. Fue fotógrafo de danza y arte, con exposiciones en Chile y Perú. Comienza en el área de sonido el 2016, y el 2020 crea el proyecto de Mapa Sonoro, el año 2021 participa en las transmisiones de Tsonami Radio (Chile), en el 2022 participa en el Festival Sur Aural (Bolivia) y Festival Asimtria (Perú). Actualmente sigue con nuevas fases del mapa sonoro y comienza como investigador sonoro.

LULL was conceived by Mick Harris in 1990, in an attempt to create music that would stretch, if not forsake entirely, the structures of conventional music by developing and exploring sound without beats.

MICK HARRIS ON LULL: 

"I finally heard the way of recording, making profound sounds. Lull is purely something I can get lost in, as far as trying to create these imaginary spaces. And that’s what I always tried to do – to create. I'm a lover of sounds. I love collecting sounds. Playing with those sounds using various software until I created something new from that sound. Which for me end being what I call "a droner" or "a drift",  I’d use those to create a piece of music, or a sound-scape. That's what I’m doing with Lull. Just trying to create soundscapes. And to this day, still, absolutely love doing that". 

THAT SPACE SOMEWHERE:

"I haven't made Lull records since 2007 so... with this pandemic, I have time on my hands. I've used that time, I think, to the best. Going to the music-room is pretty much an everyday thing to me. Which has been the best thing because I’ve not been able to do this since the 90's when I had various studios... Since the lockdown I had all this time on my hands and I created a lot of good music, which I'm actually happy with.

I'm a fisherman. It gives me a lot of space. It gives me immense pleasure. For me it's about going to the river. I like moving water. The seasons change, the river changes with the seasons. It clears my mind, gives me ideas, gives me the space to be by myself and with nature... just listening to the sounds around me.

LULL is quite natural for me. It's an extension of me. Drifting. Just going to darkness. Into a space. LULL is drifting and droning, discovering more and more what can be done with sound. These soundscapes hugely appeal to me".
