NEXUS 09 THE GRID

At the core of 'Everyone is here' lies Kajsa Lindgren's usual process, defined by one simple question: “How can you make something of your own by manipulating time and space?” The Swedish composer joins Warm Winters Ltd. after recent releases with Hyperdelia (WOMB, 2018) and Longform Editions (Undercurrents, 2019). 

This album's 20 tracks are based around archival recordings that Kajsa stumbled upon in her grandfather's old basement and around memories of places or sounds from her childhood. Slowly, the album moves through time, at first reinterpreting recordings from the 60s and 70s, eventually showcasing some of Kajsa's latest compositions for voice and field recordings. Some pieces utilise very specific recordings - “Trio for cello, piano and violin” is based on an audio snippet of Kajsa's “mother, uncle and grandfather making an appearance as a trio in Swedish radio sometime during the 70's” - while others - “Anna”, inspired by memories of the Lindgrens' family boat called Anna and the sensation of being rocked to sleep by the Baltic sea waves - are more related to memories, places or objects. 

But 'Everyone is here' isn't a mere timeline of sounds or melancholic dive into previous decades. The album is a meditation on themes of inheritance, family and closeness. The composer describes the process of collecting old sonic material as “comforting”, especially in relation to her relationship with her grandparents, parents and family friends. “[The process] has given me an intimate understanding of them as human beings. We’ve all been kids, becoming adults. Trying to figure out who we are, what we want, what makes us happy and sad in life. There’s a great sense of connection and humility in that.”

KHOST 'Buried Steel'(CSR278CD)

‘Buried Steel’ is the fourth album from Birmingham industrial metal duo KHOST, following the 2017 release ‘Governance’.

Themes and sonics of ‘Buried Steel’ range from granite and impassive to dreamlike and somnambulistic, in keeping with the promise – and threat – of the title, dwelling on slow, infallible ruination: a gravitational downthrust upon misshapen monuments and structures which are mangled, overgrown and increasingly forgotten. A monochrome landscape where nature reclaims and redefines us as time passes.

Recording of the album was marred with events such as an electrical fire which damaged some equipment. As a result, a number of tracks on the album had to be pieced together from damaged analogue elements such as reel to reel (Khost reel to reel RIP). From this point, the dynamic of some of the songs was altered, shifting their eventual outcome, particularly the tone of ambient work on Buried Steel.

KHOST Intravener

FM EINHEIT (EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN) / ANDREAS AMMER 'Hammerschlag' CD (CSR281CD)

"Hammerschlag" - created by FM Einheit (member of Einstürzende Neubauten early 1980's to mid-1990's), with Andreas Ammer -  features many percussive industrial elements and 'machine music' (chains, scraping, coiled springs, objects), noise, experimental electronics and provocative musical compositions familiar to the ears of Neubauten fans. An oratorio with prelude and two noise interludes, based on Russian futurist Aleksej Kapitonovič Gastev, the "bard of the machine age".

FM Einheit (Mufti) is an industrial and electronic musician and actor, primarily known for his percussion and compositional work with Einstürzende Neubauten, notably on the classic albums: "Kollaps", "Halber Mensch", "Haus Der Luege", "Tabula Rasa" and "Ende Neu". 

He played the lead role in the 1984 feature film Klaus Maeck's "Decoder". He has also collaborated with musicians such as: Diamanda Galás, Eraldo Bernocchi, Mona Mur, KMFDM, Goethes Erben and many more. Andreas Ammer has been creating works with FM Einheit since the early 1990’s.

Llyn Y Cwn conveys atmosphere and environment through deep ambient sounds. The sound of nature re-establishing itself in the post-industrial wilderness of a former quarry. A phantasm of echoes reflecting the bleak majesty and poetic melancholy of the hinterland of North Wales. A hole within a void, a place defined by absence in a world of negative space.

The backdrop for this cavernous soundtrack is Dinorwic slate quarry. The field recordings were taken in this vast subterranean environment where an exposed scar of rock is carved out of the mountainside on the western slope of Elidir Fawr in Snowdonia, North Wales.

Standing alone in the quarry, which covers 700 acres up to a height of 600m, it isn't difficult to imagine work going on around you with the abandoned industrial landscape juxtaposed against the backdrop of the majestic Snowdonia skyline.

Each track is named after an area of the quarry, descending ever deeper through each rock gallery, with their acoustically unique echoes and sounds. The landscape is in a state of constant flux with small avalanches of rock and spoil slate tumbling over itself - it was such a landslide that led to the eventual demise of the quarry. The hydroelectric power station, built deep underground inside the mountain, can be heard rumbling away through the various air shafts dotted around the quarry, adding to the overall ominous feel of the pieces.

「Small Stone」

"In Japan during the Covid-19 lock down we saw a movement. It was created from a woman who raised her voice to say NO via SNS to one of the controversial bills, a revision of the public prosecutor's office law* that was about to go through the Lower House without a fair public hearing. This tiny voice of hers went viral and formed an online demonstration to protect our democracy. It is very rare in Japan for the public to be actively involved in any policies. Alas the bill was temporarily suspended because many finally stood up.

“ When we threw lots of small stones, the mountain got moved a little. However we shouldn’t celebrate yet. We need to be calm and grounded and observe what the government will do.” says Kyoko Koizumi, an actress and a producer whom I respect dearly. Her phrases sums up things that do not change so easily. 


*A proposed legal revision that would raise the retirement age for prosecutors became the centre of controversy this week when it was taken up by the Lower House. Unlike officials in other administrative organizations, prosecutors have wide powers to investigate, arrest and indict anyone, even prime ministers and other high officials. They must remain highly neutral and independent from other authorities and political powers. Since the proposed revision could allow the Cabinet to intervene in the personnel affairs of prosecutors’ offices, many experts fear it could jeopardize the independence of prosecutors and the separation of powers.

「Two Blue Kites」

June 4th 1989 , it is a very memorable day for me. 

31 years ago I took part in a demonstration for the first time ever in my life. It was a small resistance held in Tokyo. I was with the Chinese people raising my voice out loud in the crowd. I couldn’t do anything but I felt that I had to do something. 

In the beginning of the 90s I was going back and forth between Tokyo and Hong Kong making music. I was offered to make music for a film portrait the night before the Chinese Cultural Revolution called “ The Blue Kite”. The producer of this film invited me to make the music for the film. The film director was banned from making this film in mainland China and he escaped to Japan via Hong Kong. The film was finally completed in Japan. Hong Kong was still in British colony then. This film made my film music career begin. 

June 4th 2020 The Hong Kong government banned the public to organise and attend the candlelight rallies to mark the Tiananmen Square massacre. Despite the harsh policing and the Covid-19 regulation many people (still) defied the ban and tried to attend the commemoration. I was thinking of many of my friends there at the moment.  

I wonder how this little country, Hong Kong, that “brought me up” and “ shaped me who I am today” will be from now. My heart is full of concern for its future.

日本では、ステイホームの期間中の5月8日、一人の女性の発言をきっかけに、現

政権がやろうとしていた三権分立をゆるがすようなひどい法案(検察庁法改正案)に対し多くの人々

がSNSを使って異を唱え、それがデモのような効果をもたらし、5月18日国会で

の法案決議を阻止するに至った。

「小さな石をたくさん投げたら山が少し動いた。が、浮き足立ってはいけない。

冷静に誰が何を言い、どんな行動を取るのか見守りたい。」敬愛する女優であり

プロデューサーの小泉今日子が5月19日にSNSで呟いたこの発言は、そのうねり

のことと同時に、しかしそう簡単に現状は変わらないことも表している。

エリック・ドルフィーが作る曲は呼吸とともにある。2020年5月25日は忘れては

ならない日だ。みなが伸び伸びと息ができる世界のために。

  6月4日は個人的にも忘れられない日だ。31年前のこの日、わたしは初めてデモに

参加した。東京でおこなわれた小さなデモだった。東京に住む中国人たちと一緒

にわたしも声をあげていた。いてもたってもいられなかったのだ。

90年代初頭、わたしは香港と東京を行き来して音楽をつくっていた。そんな中

1993年、文化大革命前夜の北京を描いた「The Blue Kite」という中国映画の音楽

を作ることになったのが、わたしが映画の世界に入る切っ掛けだった。中国で作

ることを禁じられ、香港経由でフィルムを持って日本に脱出した監督が東京で完

成させた映画で、香港のプロデューサーがわたしを誘ってくれたのだ。当時香港

はまだイギリス領だった。

2020年6月4日、香港では天安門事件31周年の集会が新型コロナを理由に禁止され

ていたにも関わらず、多くの人たちが集まり追悼集会が開かれていた。きっと多

くの友人もそこにいるのだろう。わたしを育ててくれた香港はどうなっていくの

だろうか。「The Blue Kite」は今でも中国での上映が禁止されている。

“Death Ceremonies” is the darkest, most primitive death industrial record, soaked throughout with the smell of rotting corpses and burning bodies.

Controlled Death (MASONNA) features Yamazaki’s most compulsive Korg MS-20 drones and obsessive, disturbing vocals, drenched with anxiety and alienation. Dense atmospheres of doom, death and decay build up just to break away in deep paranoia. Rudolf Eb.er (SCHIMPFLUCH) scratches a near-dead violin over horrifying synth tones, celebrating obscure forest rituals, unearthing an archaic actionism and long forgotten witchery – decomposing his raw sounds on dusty magnetic tape.

Maso Yamazaki (best known for his extreme Japanoise project Masonna) and Rudolf Eb.er (Swiss noise-actionists of the legendary Schimpfluch circle) collaborated live and in the studio multiple times during the mid and late 90’s. Both based in Osaka, Japan, a spontaneous meeting brought up their mutual interest in degraded and primitive black metal. Discussing their own latest black brews of sinister side projects gave birth to the idea of the “Death Ceremonies” LP.

Out of print on CD for almost two decades, Cold Spring are proud to announce the official reissue of a much sought after 'Best Of' set by the acclaimed experimental group Coil, with 'A Guide For Beginners - The Voice Of Silver' and 'A Guide For Finishers - A Hair Of Gold' being made available together in one deluxe set.

Officially licensed from FEELEE, this edition spans Coil's entire career, featuring tracks from all their major albums. They were hand-picked by Coil to represent their best work and originally released to mark their first performance in Moscow in 2001.

The artwork (text in English and Russian Cyrillic) sympathetically features the rarest of the images previously used in the original Russian and English editions and is packaged in a deluxe, glossy 8-panel digipak with spot matt-laminate varnish.

The vinyl-only edition by FEELEE was released as two separate luxurious 2xLP editions in 2018 (http://feelee.bandcamp.com). All artwork for the Cold Spring edition has been approved by FEELEE.

COIL Ostia (The Death Of Pasolini)

"Listening is and always has been at the core of The Quiet Club’s (Danny McCarthy & Mick O’Shea) work combined with their policy of not discussing the work before or after its performance this has been the hallmark of their practice. 

Unable to listen to each other perform during the Covid 19 Lockdown the duo resorted to Telepathic Listening. Uninterested in Zoom, Facetime etc. the duo decided to each perform in their own separate studio’s miles apart at a given time on appointed days for twenty minutes. The concept was that then the two recordings would be combined together unedited.

On June 16th 2020 (Bloomsday) the artists inspired by Joyce, performed separately but at the same time and the recordings were then combined together unedited to form Telepathic Lockdown Tape No 7.

There are several other works in the series including one which they both played at 4:33pm as a tribute to John Cage. Telepathic Lockdown Tape No 9."

Jagath is a ritual/industrial ambient act from Perm, Russia. 

We create our music at abandoned industrial locations - the bottom of a moist underground sewer shaft and inside huge hollow oil tanks - without using digital synthesis. We use simple, mostly hand-crafted instruments, found objects and our voices. We do this to share our vision of decaying post-industrial age, to unleash the spirit of deep beyond-world and unveil life in the abyss. 

It is cold out here, in Russia, everything stays frozen for decades. Life is almost stopped, and this cannot be changed. So we have to do something so as not to freeze to death. 

"A firefly may inspire a man. Man takes a flint, flint carves sparks, sparks set fire to wood, a flame lights up. Flaring up more and more, a fire turns into a firestorm. Firestorm lives its own life". 

"Devalaya" ("Temple") was recorded in vast oil tanks from 2015 to 2018.
