Markets of the World

Mtskheta is one of the oldest cities of Georgia and its former capital. The beautiful city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, features a winding market just outside the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century). This sound walk features the local stall holders laughing and chatting.

Local Market - Mtskheta, Georgia

A soundwalk through the Dezerter Bazaar in Tbilisi, one of the largest markets in the city. As we walked from stall to stall we were met with incredible smells from the many spices being sold, we saw brightly coloured fruit and vegetables and of course heard a rich, diverse soundscape. There were a multitude of dialects including Georgian, Armenian, Azerbaijani and Russian. I recorded this soundwalk as I moved throughout the market.

Borough Market is a London's oldest food market that operates every Friday and Saturday. It is situated below the train line at London Bridge. I feel this recording really captures the atmosphere of the market, with vendors shouting their "2 for £1.50" offers in a classic London accent and trains screeching overhead.

Predominantly a food market, the street was so full of pedestrians that traffic couldn't easily pass through. So, of course what better way to announce that you are trying to drive through than to use your horn!

This recording was made as I walked around the local street market in the centre of Ubud, Bali. Half of the market was predominantly aimed at tourists whilst the other half was a local flea market.

Porta Portese is Rome's largest flea market that is held every Sunday in the Trastevere area. I was staying very close to the market so we went and had a quick stroll late Sunday morning. There was a very lively atmosphere that I couldn't help recording.
