While writing this piece, I was inspired by the transformation of broken glass into sea glass: sharp fragments tumbling around, slowly being softened by the ocean’s waves. I have written it with two sections in mind. The A section depicts the broken glass, while the B section depicts the deep sea. These two sections first contrast each other, and then later interact with each other, and eventually, they change each other.
I would like to send my warmest thank you to Claire Park for not only commissioning this piece, but for being extremely involved in the creative process.  Thank you for contributing so much to the vision of this piece.

My friend Rex passed away earlier this week. we didn't keep in touch that much after I left Cal-State, but definitely left a huge impact on me. This piece is in honor of an awesome friend. Im gonna miss you brother...

This piece was inspired by Maya Angelou's poem "Caged Bird". The performance took place on April 17th, 2019 by professional chamber group yMusic. The instrumentation is flute, clarinet, trumpet, violin, viola, and cello.
