This renowned French techno producer, known as Manuel-M, is also the author of three ambient albums, Endurance (2008), Thirty (2016) and the newly released Forest (2022), whose serenity, cinematic atmospheres, drones and long synthetic complaints evoke the majestic landscapes that adorn the covers of his records.

𝔸 𝕗𝕖𝕨 𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕕𝕤 𝕒𝕓𝕠𝕦𝕥 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕥𝕣𝕒𝕔𝕜 ℂ𝕝𝕒𝕚𝕣 𝕆𝕓𝕤𝕔𝕦𝕣 

The piece is based on a hypnotic loop, taken from a fragment of a classical music orchestra chord, the sound of which is largely reworked. As the composition progresses, other patterns, including inverted sounds, appear to create a sense of movement, waves, and a slight confusion.For me, the progression of "Clair Obscur" could evoke a human figure, in the grip of some kind of blockage, impasse, but also of reset. As if trying to progress against the elements, to swim against the tide, while gaining ground step by step. The bass settles in to support this desire to progress, one melody answers another to create a dialogue. Then longer notes come in to guide the evolution of the whole piece.I wanted to express this need to keep moving forward. That despite the pitfalls, life goes on. That we must move forward. That we are our own unique driving force.

Ambient is a refuge. It's a space where I get more intimate, a place where I can express my different feelings. For me there is always a duality between light and shadow. A sort of in-between, a grey area where everything is mixed up. A combination of contemplation and introspection. In my latest pieces, I try to add a brighter side to explore new horizons, but without letting go of my inner emotions, my own experience. When it comes to listening to ambient music, I enjoy the eclectic and varied sound universes that artists are proposing today. Many of them have a beautiful musical world, with very strong concepts. This music adapts to many contexts. I think that we have never heard as much as we do today. Both consciously, with active and attentive listening, and in the background in film music, documentaries, in an exhibition...

Luc Bydon aka. Prōtokol is a French musician, composer, performer, dj and one of Échosystème’s co-founder. In 2017, back in Paris, he launched the Planisphère, an experimental music label and radio show. Today, his music falls somewhere between ambient, electronica and techno. In 2020, he released his first EP of electronic music "Lueur crépusculaire", on his  label. He followed it up with a ambient EP this time " Kowuq: Prolegomena" where his work focuses on the elasticity of time.

Ambient is a genre that anyone can tame, interpret, reshape and enrich. Ambient is not easily defined, because everyone has their own approach to the subject. Almost half a century after Brian Eno's Discreet Music, ambient music is no longer truly discreet - it's omnipresent in our lives. Ambient music gently lulls us and invites us to take an inner journey. It encourages concentration and even has therapeutic virtues. It can be as gentle as it is violent, as naive as it is complex, as meditative as it is political.

Mathias Delplanque  has released some thirty albums since 2002, both solo and with his group Lena. He is a sound artist and composer for contemporary dance, navigating between ambient, electronica and electroacoustic music. He performed,  in March 2023 during an Échosystème event  at l’Archipel, a live set inspired by his albums 'Ô Seuil' (2022) and 'Drachen' (2015, released on the label called Ici d'ailleurs, using a series of instruments sampled live (electric bass played with a bow, chimes, drums  and synthesizers), from which he constructs rich acoustic materials creating immersive soundscapes.


𝔸 𝕗𝕖𝕨 𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕕𝕤 𝕒𝕓𝕠𝕦𝕥 𝕥𝕙𝕚𝕤 𝕝𝕚𝕧𝕖

This live performance is the latest stage of a solo live project that I've been developing for over twenty years. It's a great laboratory, a lifelong project... It has obviously taken many different forms and colors. But the questions always remain more or less the same. How do you do a 'real' live performance with live machines? What tools should you use, what principles should you follow to get yourself into a real musical game on stage? I'm working on the relationship between machines and acoustic instruments, the link between improvisation and interpretation... This solo is a personal creative space that is constantly evolving.

This latest live show, imagined to accompany the release of my album 'Ô Seuil' on Ici d'Ailleurs label, is the most constructed and composed piece I've ever done. In the end, there's very little improvisation. On the other hand, I let myself go with the instrumentarium... There are pre-recorded elements (rhythms, bass, etc.), which I mix live using a bunch of MIDI controllers. I play the bass with a bow, the metallophone, I use three synthesizers, I transform my voice into a microphone... I systematically sample and transform all these sounds in real time. In fact, the tracks are written, I know where I'm going in terms of structure, but the sound part (mixing, sound processing) is totally improvised. I guess that's because of my dub roots.

I've always listened to a lot of ambient music. And I have a deep affection for 'space music'. These kinds of music dilute traditional musical structures and are more akin to environments. I did a lot of painting before I started making music, and I feel that I'm still approaching musical composition from a painter's point of view.

Personally, I don't use the term 'ambient' to describe my music. I'm not sure it fits. I might prefer the term 'immersive music'. I find that term a bit more dynamic. My music is built on tensions and contrasts. It's deeply narrative, moving, playing with extremes. While I'm a fervent advocate of slowness and sonic immersion, I approach music as a game of tensions.

Benoît de Villeneuve is an eclectic composer and producer whose career spans electronica, pop, contemporary music, and film soundtracks. He is a member of the duo Villeneuve & Morando and the band Team Ghost. This excerpt is from his solo album, set to be released in spring 2022 by Scum Yr Earth. Developed as an album, an installation, and a film, 𝑁𝑜𝑤 𝐼 𝐴𝑚 𝐴𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝐵𝑒𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑠 draws its electronic motifs from ambient music, 1970s kosmische musik experiments, cinema, and minimalism.

Created under the impulse of Jean-Yves Leloup (journalist, author of books on music), Christine Samandel (electronic music programmer), and Luc Bydon (musician, founder of the label Planisphère), the crew offers concerts, conferences and open discussions with artists, in order to federate a French electronic and ambient scene that is still emerging, in spite of an already long history.
