VICTOR POIRIER | DEPARTMENT HEAD

Victor’s interest in film started at age 17 when he had the opportunity to work as a PA on the documentary film A Life, by the late award-winning Canadian documentary filmmaker Frank Cole. After his work on the film (described by Andrienne Mancia of New York’s Museum of Modern Art as doing “some of the things that Scorsese does in The Last Temptation of Christ, but perhaps better”) Victor moved into photography, studying for a BFA at the University of Ottawa.

Post university, Victor worked as a set photographer, gaffer, camera assistant and camera operator in the Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal film industries; he then opened Erebus Productions, a facilities house which serviced the Eastern corridor with grip, electric, 16 mm and 35 mm film cameras. After a period directing music videos for Canadian bands,  he moved to producing and directing under the banner Panfilms, where he won several awards in various categories, including documentary, national PSA’s, and animation, for a variety of networks, including CTV, OLN TVO and CBC.

In 2001, Victor moved to the UK where he became the director of BBC Scotland’s longest serving episodic television series The Beechgrove as well as several series for ITV and BBC Gaelic. Over the course of eight years he directed and produced over 150 episodes of Primetime, from documentary, to lifestyle to reality. Victor also acted as Executive Producer on the BBC series, The Food Trail. Victor gained national recognition for his role as producer/director on the ITV series The Woman Who Ate Scotland, which broke established viewing figures and gained a Scottish Thistle nomination.

After moving back to Canada in 2008, he worked as director of development at Ocean Entertainment in Halifax, Nova Scotia before relocating to the Okanagan.. Victor now lives in Kelowna and works at the Center for Arts and Technology managing the Digital Filmmaking, and Digital Photography departments.

CAT Chat Special #2 - Best of Rapid Fire (Part 1)

CAT Chat is the official podcast of Centre for Arts and Technology, where host Chris Morris speaks to teachers, alumni and members of industry concerning all of our programs.

On this episode, we switch things up, as we talk to a current student,  Cheyanna Kidd (3D Animation) and her partner, Kurtis Peskleway, who are the team behind the new short film, "Like and Follow".  The film is about two characters, Awinita and Kai, "Two unsuspecting teens who learn the true meaning of connection when technology suddenly takes flight".  

In this podcast, Cheyenne and Kurtis talk about how they went through the Reel Youth Canada, TELUS Storyhive system and how the film will be released during the "Okanagan Youth Community Stories Online Film Premiere" on September 10th, 2020

Cheyanna tells us a lot about her journey to CAT, what it took to come from small town Tisdale, Saskatchewan to follow her dream of becoming an animator, having to pause her education due to some unforseen circumstances and then returning to finish her classes.  Cheyanna is very open with us, discussing how being autistic affects her art and how that hasn't stopped her in pursuing her dreams, and tells us the process in directing "Like and Follow" working with a diverse team of artists during the COVID-10 pandemic.  Kurtis tells us more about the process of bringing together the music and sound for the movie as well.

On this episode, we do something a little different where Animation Department Head Sean Ridgway with Animation Alumni Jenna “Dingo” Woldenga.  This interview was originally conducted for Interface Magazine but we decided to use the audio for this special podcast!

Jenna has a YouTube channel ‘Dingo Doodles’ in which she releases a monthly animated video.  She’s up to over 657,000 subscribers and it’s become her full-time job.  She graduated from the 2DADA program in 2015.  She also talks about her comic book “Electric Bunny” and working in the animation industry.
