Melbourne cinematic funk outfit Karate Boogaloo's third instalment of their KB’s Mixtapes series - KB’s Mixtape No. 3 - Songs from Film & Television.

On this mixtape, KB reinterpret and reengineer themes from film and TV that were used as sample material in hip hop, diving deep into a plethora of sources and flipping them in their wonky, left-field instro-soul style.

The KBs Mixtapes series, self-produced collections of interpretations of hip hop samples, fast became cult classics amongst Melbourne’s diggers; since KB’s Mixtape No. 1’s independent release and distribution by the band, crusty funk reimaginings of deep tunes from the world of hip hop subversively found their way onto turntables around the world.

KB’s Mixtape No.3, was produced and engineered by Karate Boogaloo bass player Henry Jenkins. A pivotal cog in the engine of Melbourne soul, Jenkins is responsible for the production of every record on the College Of Knowledge catalogue, including both Surprise Chef LPs All News Is Good News and Daylight Savings.

KB’s Mixtape No. 3 will be released on College Of Knowledge Records, the independent label flying the flag of DIY cinematic soul; home to emerging Melbourne bands Surprise Chef and The Pro-Teens alongside KB.

Recorded live to tape in Karate Boogaloo’s studio space, a cramped attic above a factory in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood, the record was entirely tracked and mixed by the band – a process integral to the band’s steadfast DIY work-ethic. 

The self-produced album marries gritty soul from the school of El Michels Affair with unorthodox arrangements and razor-sharp playing. ‘Carn The Boogers’ collates heavy, minor key deep funk with rolling cinematic themes and left-field instrumental experiments.

You're A Legend In Your Own Lunchbox: An Introductory Pro-Teens DJ mix by Libby Clique-Baité

In 2016, the members of Karate Boogaloo lived together in a West Brunswick sharehouse dubbed ‘Wyall Style’, which housed their DIY analogue studio. By the time the house tragically succumbed to a mould infestation, Karate Boogaloo had produced a plethora of recordings in the studio, including an album called Stay Healthy that never saw the light of day. 
From these sessions, two deep cinematic minor-key funk tracks were released on a 45 in 2018. To release this 45, Karate Boogaloo concocted the short-lived, self-run record label ‘Frollen Records’. 

The 7” record was pressed as a limited 300-copy run, and given only to one local Melbourne record store to sell. The record was given no formal release process - therefore, as intended, the record went well under the radar of all except Melbourne’s keenest record diggers.

Since acquiring promo copies of the 7” from the band in 2017, College Of Knowledge label heads Jethro Curtin and Lachlan Stuckey championed the record in DJ sets around Melbourne. 

Now, this under-the-radar, on-point DIY funk 45 joins the catalogue of independent Melbourne soul label College Of Knowledge Records, finding a new home in a hand-stamped COK company sleeve.

On July 3rd, Bandcamp’s no revenue share day, all sales of physical and digital of this release will be donated in their entirety to Bridging The Gap Foundation for Indigenous Health and Eduction (https://btgfoundation.com.au/).

Mr Bongo (Brighton, UK) will be the exclusive retailer outside of Australia for this release.
