“This song was unusual when it comes to how we typically write. Mackenzie and I met up at the studio and there was a general sense of being burnt out on the songs we’d been working on, so I was happy when he said he had a dream the night before and wrote a song in it.  — As he demoed it out, I pressed the record and just happily listened. I had no idea what I was going to sing about for a good while, then the first line about a baseball bat came out. The lyrics are about a strange exchange with a friend and the rest describes how I feel toward the friends I’ve kept. Somebody told me recently my lyrics can sound encrypted so this was my best attempt at writing on the nose."

Since TONE dropped his debut album last year ‘So I Can See You’ on Rhythm Section INTL to prominent acclaim, he has entasked his musical community to remix the album - namely members of the CURL collective. Formed in 2016 by Micachu, Coby Sey, and Brother May, they have performed together and released compilations from the likes of Lol K, Bianca Scout, Raisa K and others, who all feature on the remix album. As the version LP has taken fruition, Tone has played SXSW, Cafe OTO and 180 Strand, and simultaneously continuing his journey as a hard-working family man. 

TONE’s debut was filled with an ariose spoken singing style, post-punk tones and a back-to-basics production style courtesy of his 8-track tape machine - perfect elements for any remixer. With no specific brief, artists indulged in their specific visions. Trevor Jackson’s industrial dub aesthetic is brought to ‘Move Now’, his first remix since working for deftones’ ‘White Pony’ deluxe reissue in 2020. Stay Lo contributes a tribute to the early 10s ‘dreamstep’ with tik-tok friendly ‘In & Out’ remix and meditative chug from ‘So I Can See You Pt. 2’ by Coby Sey and Tone himself. 

The ‘So I Can See You’ LP represented cause and effect between his relationship with his own creativity and the emergence of his daughter, from pregnancy and beyond, and thus the remix LP explores the wider sonic variety of Tone and his musical compatriots.

Biography

In a world full of lies and deception, it’s important to live within the truth when it comes to what we tell ourselves. That’s what Poet Lies, the debut album by San Diego’s moondaddy, is all about.

Multi-instrumentalist and driving force behind the project Cara Potiker wrote the record as a means of grappling with difficulties she’s lived with for most of her life. An escapist at heart, Potiker’s manner of getting away during the early days of the pandemic, when no one could go anywhere, meant diving deep into songwriting as a coping mechanism. Yet in that process of solitude and introspection, Potiker discovered a few aspects of herself that she no longer wanted to keep buried, and it all unfolds within the notes of the tracks. The eleven songs that make up Poet Lies all comment on establishing a balance between working to resolve that which ails and being proud of the person those ailments helped shape—an interesting dichotomy that manifests itself in many ways.

When it comes to the structure and thematic approach on the new record, Potiker fervidly disperses and weaves different subjects throughout. Titles like “Odd Time,” “Angel,” and “Alone Again” may hint at a certain way they’re leaning, but they each manage to be broad in their personal specificity to instances in Potiker’s life and self. She likens the experience of writing and recording the album to that of an exorcism; it’s a release of the vice grip that love, addiction, obsessive tendencies, and self doubt have had on her which allows her to examine how those things have influenced how she has felt about herself while maneuvering through life.

Poet Lies is a reverb soaked, shimmering fever dream of a record that sonically pulls from influences ranging from 1970’s glam rock to 90’s shoegaze and trip hop. Featuring contributions from talented local musicians from Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas, it was recorded at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas by Manuel Calderon - aka El Cosmophonico - known for his production work on records by Animal Collective and Beach House, as well as his own band, Estereomance.
