Roboter entdeckt Gefühle ( robot discover feelings )

The final movement of my recent Composer in Residence piece inspired by working with participants from Brocton and Chebsey House and Mind. The piece was workshopped and performed at Stafford Gatehouse by members of Manchester Camerata on 29th Jan 2015. This is a live recording.

At 2:38, I quote the main theme of "Popcorn", an early synthpop instrumental, composed by Gershon Kingsley in 1969 and first appearing on his album Music to Moog By. The same year it was released and recorded at Audio Fidelity Records label in New York City. The composition received its title during a meeting between Kingsley and Audio Fidelity; Kingsley indicated the track did not have a title and someone suggested "Popcorn", with 'Pop' standing for pop music and 'corn' for kitsch. Some single sleeves (such as the one illustrated) presents the title as two words, "Pop Corn", but the title is generally presented as one word. In 1972, Hot Butter's rerecording was a huge hit in many countries. "Popcorn" has since been covered by a great number of artists.

A lonely, long-gone West Village cocktail lounge
February 3, 2011 / I have no idea when George Herdt’s bar and restaurant opened or closed. And I can only guess at the clientele—perhaps the same mix of longshoremen, factory workers, and locals who frequented the White Horse a few blocks away back in the 1940s and 1950s, way before the far West Village became trendy. This lovely, ghostly photo was taken in the early 1970s by author Katherine Towler. She lived in Chelsea then; luckily she documented some West Side haunts of the time—most, like this one, are no longer there.
