Against the backdrop of the global pandemic that radically altered her everyday reality and the Black Lives Matter movement that sharpened her focus on black equity and erasure in dance music, the much-loved London-born, Manchester-based producer and DJ launched OTMI. While this genre-spanning label will release music from friends and collaborators, its debut release came from Anz herself as 001 explored the processes of coming un-done and rebuilding. Hard relate. At the beginning of lockdown, the industrious talent set herself the target of making 40 tracks and by the summer she had channeled her closed club frustrations to amass 74 tracks to soundtrack these unprecedented times. Throughout it all, Anz has played her signature blend of bass, UK funky, breakbeats, ghetto tech and electro selections once a month on her NTS Manchester show. As she’s been a regular of the station for half of its life, who better to close its 10.10 Store Mix takeover? Just as Manchester International Festival (MIF) announced her as one of the acts for its Homecoming Live night, Anz – who spends so much of her time recording club mixes –  wanted to share something different. Here, she wants you to take it easy with 65 minutes of “stone cold classics”.

Last year, New Jersey group OSSX wowed us with a mix of completely original material that blended infectious edits of Janet Jackson and September with tracks like "Split Wig"—one of last year's indisputable breakbeat anthems—that showed how the then-duo could bring together generations of American dance music into one compelling, vibrant mix that celebrates all shades of East Coast club.

Their RA Podcast might not be an all-originals mix, but it shares the same spirit. OSSX—now a trio, with Juke Bounce Werk member Elise joining original duo Equiss and Lektor Scopes—sprinkle the mix with more of their excellent unreleased originals, in-between canny and clever edits new and old, like DJ Sega's rework of Basement Jaxx's "Where Your Head At," which makes for an early highlight, along with DJ Swisha's Baltimore club edit of Robin S.'s "Luv 4 Luv" and the bouncy DJ Problem version of Mary J. Blige's classic "Family Affair." You can hear both the evolution and history of these genres through this mix, along with cuts that touch on UK garage, ballroom and jungle. Trust us when we say that this is over an hour of pure fun, showing the ingenuity and timelessness of American dance music through the decades.

A. I've been a part of the scene for about 10 years, DJing for the last 8.

Q. Tell us about this mix.
A. This mix is a snapshot of my life and mood as of late. As I move into a new season, I'm learning a lot about my own capacity for resilience and fortitude, and this mix captures that nicely. It's introspective, emotional, deep with moments of darkness and hope, and is rounded out with a bit of celebratory fun. It explores the more ambient side of house and techno, with a nice blend of textures and percussion throughout. It's imperfect, uneven, lofi, but honest. I see it as a nice accompaniment to lounging, working, pondering, tripping, feeling or simply just existing.

"A mostly vinyl mix in effort to highlight the Deep House/US Garage style of House Music and the artist and labels who pioneered the sound. The term Garage most commonly associated with UK Garage is actually rooted in New York’s Paradise Garage and was a marketing term created to distinguish NY/NJ House from the sounds coming out of Chicago and Detroit. Swung beats, pretty chords and huge diva vocals were common elements of a NY/NJ House track. More rooted in Jazz, Soul and R&B than the edgy futuristic sounds of Chicago and Detroit. Producers like Masters at Work, Mood II Swing and Kerri Chandler were some at the forefront of the sound as well as unsung heroes like Blaze or Victor Simonelli. New York had a strong independent record label culture that goes back to the disco era of the 70s. Before the advent of the digital era and the devaluation of music, independent record labels were able to thrive. Strictly Rhythm, Nervous, Kult and Eight Ball records were among the many labels pushing the NY/NJ sound. 90s New York and New Jersey club music were inseparable up until the BMORE influenced Jersey Club sounds of the 2000’s.

New York and New Jersey have such a rich history of Club Culture and Dance/Electronic Music. It’s unfortunate how little education there is on the topic. Yes, House Music was pioneered in Chicago but New York and New Jersey have always had their own thing going on and played a huge role in the development of the genre and culture. This style/era of house could not possibly be encapsulated in a 1 hour mix but these are some of my favorite tracks that I’ve collected over the years."  

DONIS pronounced (DAH-NIS) is a Dominican American DJ/Producer born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Their style is rooted in their city’s rich club culture history, often paying homage to the sounds of New York’s golden era. Equally versed in playing contemporary styles of club music as well, they mix US regional styles with Afro Latin/Caribbean sounds like Dembow and Afro House. They have become well known in the underground scene playing parties for Papi Juice, Boiler Room, Dweller Festival and regularly playing at local venues like Lebain, Elsewhere and Paragon. They recently worked as Music Supervisor for Head of State’s FW23 fashion show, scored 2 ads for Telfar and have been shelling their residency at renowned club Nowadays.
